Epidemiology and Classification of Strokes

1991

Epidemiology concerns the occurrence and distribution of diseases in the population. By prevalence is meant the number of cases of the disease at a particular moment in a given group of persons, for example, in the entire population of a certain territory or in a clearly demarcated population group. Incidence refers to the number of new cases of the disease occurring in a population in a particular period of time. Figures on prevalence and incidence are meaningful only if the given disease is unequivocally defined. If the definition is too specific, many cases are not included (false-negative cases), whereas too broad a definition leads to many false-positive identifications (Table 3.1). Di…

Antiepileptic Drugs, Sexual Functions and Serum Hormonal Profile in Males with Epilepsy

2014

Sexual dysfunctions are a common problem in epileptic men. Etiology is multifactorial involving both epilepsy and antiepileptic drugs. Purpose of this study was to evaluate incidence of sexual dysfunctions in epileptic men, assessing epilepsy, antiepileptic drugs, serum hormonal profile, psychiatric disorders.

Epidemiology and risk factors for oesophageal adenocarcinoma.

2013

Oesophageal adenocarcinoma will soon cease to be a rare form of cancer for people born after 1940. In many Western countries, its incidence has increased more rapidly than other digestive cancers. Incidence started increasing in the Seventies in England and USA, 15 years later in Western Europe and Australia. The cumulative risk between the ages of 15 and 74 is particularly striking in the UK, with a tenfold increase in men and fivefold increase in women in little more than a single generation. Prognosis is poor with a 5-year relative survival rate of less than 10%. The main known risk factors are gastro-oesophageal reflux, obesity (predominantly mediated by intra-abdominal adipose tissues)…

Robot-assisted and conventional minimally invasive esophagectomy are associated with better postoperative results compared to hybrid and open transth…

2021

BACKGROUND Currently 4 surgical techniques are performed for transthoracic esophagectomy (open esophagectomy (OE), hybrid esophagectomy (HE), conventional minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) and robot assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (RAMIE). Aim of this study was to compare these 4 different esophagectomy approaches regarding postoperative complications and short term oncologic outcomes. METHODS Between 2008 and 2019, consecutive patients who underwent esophagectomy with gastric conduit reconstruction were included in this single center study. The primary outcome of this study was the incidence of postoperative complications. RESULTS Overall 422 patients (OE (n = 107), HE (n = …

Incidence of mandibular fractures in black sea region of Turkey

2015

Background: The aim of this study is to review the incidence of mandibular fractures in the Black Sea Region of Turkey and to present our treatment protocol. Material and Methods: Data were collected regarding age, sex, etiology, time distribution, site of the fracture and the associated injuries and evaluated. These patients were treated at Ondokuz Mayıs University Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery between 2003 and 2010. Data were collected from patient files in the archive and were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 software. Results: A total of 82 patients with 133 mandibular fractures were included in this study. After the follow up period of the patients, the results were achi…

Epidemiology and social costs of hip fracture.

2018

Hip fracture is an important and debilitating condition in older people, particularly in women. The epidemiological data varies between countries, but it is globally estimated that hip fractures will affect around 18% of women and 6% of men. Although the age-standardised incidence is gradually falling in many countries, this is far outweighed by the ageing of the population. Thus, the global number of hip fractures is expected to increase from 1.26 million in 1990 to 4.5 million by the year 2050. The direct costs associated with this condition are enormous since it requires a long period of hospitalisation and subsequent rehabilitation. Furthermore, hip fracture is associated with the devel…

Incidence of Staphylococcus aureus in meals from cafeterias

2002

A study to determine the incidence of Staphylococccus aureus in 705 meals from several cafeterias in Valencia, Spain was undertaken. Out of the 705 studied meals, 81 samples (I I. I %) had coagulase positive staphylococci with a range of S. aureus from 100 to 53000 cfu/g. me four highest values (> l0,ooO S. aureus &/g) were obtained with Russian type salad, meatballs, chicken croquettes and salad. These products involved more handling stages. These data show that food handlers may contribute to food poisoning and that there are some handling practices that require more attention.

A prospective analysis of the injury incidence of young male professional football players on artificial turf

2016

Background: The effects of synthetic surfaces on the risk of injuries is still debated in literature and the majority of published data seems to be contradictory. For such reasons the understanding of injury incidence on such surfaces, especially in youth sport, is fundamental for injury prevention. Objectives: The aim of this study was to prospectively report the epidemiology of injuries in young football players, playing on artificial turfs, during a one sports season. Patients and Methods: 80 young male football players (age 16.1 ± 3.7 years; height 174 ± 6.6 cm; weight 64.2 ± 6.3 kg) were enrolled in a prospective cohort study. The participants were then divided in two groups; the first…
