Electrochemical response of ferrocenium filled calix[4]arene capsules in solution and immobilized on gold
2008
Abstract Hydrogen-bonded dimers of tetra-urea calix[4]arenes are able to include ferrocenium ions as a guest. Heterodimeric capsules are exclusively formed in 1:1 mixtures of tetra-arylurea calix[4]arene 1 with tetra-tosylurea calix[4]arene 2. Sulfide groups attached via spacers on the urea rim of 1 allow their binding to metal surfaces rendering simultaneously their dissociation more difficult. Thus, the electrochemical response of encapsulated ferrocenium could be studied in a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) in addition to the solution electrochemistry with cyclic voltammetry. The stability of the electrochemically active monolayers was tested after a heat treatment (225 °C for 30 min in N…
ALS monocyte-derived microglia-like cells reveal cytoplasmic TDP-43 accumulation, DNA damage, and cell-specific impairment of phagocytosis associated…
2022
Abstract Background Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disease characterised by the loss of upper and lower motor neurons. Increasing evidence indicates that neuroinflammation mediated by microglia contributes to ALS pathogenesis. This microglial activation is evident in post-mortem brain tissues and neuroimaging data from patients with ALS. However, the role of microglia in the pathogenesis and progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis remains unclear, partly due to the lack of a model system that is able to faithfully recapitulate the clinical pathology of ALS. To address this shortcoming, we describe an approach that generates monocyte-derived mi…
Strange vesicles with a homogeneous content in spermatocytes and spermatids of a click beetle, Adelocera murina (Elateridae). A fine structure study
1996
Abstract The restructuring of primary spermatocytes of Adelocera murina, a click beetle, is described using electron microscopy of ultrathin sections. Emphasis is on spherical or rod-shaped cytoplasmic inclusions, invested by a unit membrane. The content of the inclusions is slightly more electron-dense than that of the surrounding cytoplasm and homogeneously textured in most cases. The inclusions are missing in spermatogonia but are abundant in prophase I through anaphase I spermatocytes. Their number declines in telophase I. Very similar elements are associated with the distal ends of the outgrowing flagella in metaphase I through telophase I spermatocytes and form the so-called flagellar…
The geochemical riddle of “low-salinity gypsum” deposits
2022
International audience; Gypsum makes up about one fifth of giant salt deposits formed by evaporation of seawater throughout Earth’s history. Although thermodynamic calculations and precipitation experiments predict that gypsum precipitates when the salinity of evaporating seawater attains about 110 g kg-1, gypsum deposits of the Mediterranean Salt Giant often bear the geochemical signature of precipitation from less saline water masses. Addressing this geochemical riddle is important because marine gypsum deposition and continental gypsum erosion affect the global carbon cycle. We investigated gypsum deposits formed in the marginal basins of the Mediterranean Sea during the Messinian Salini…
Crustal controls on light noble gas isotope variability along the andean volcanic arc
2021
This study combines new noble gas data from fluid inclusions in minerals from Sabancaya, Ubinas, and El Misti (CVZ, Peru) and Villarica (South Chile, SVZ) with a revised noble gas compilation in the Andes, to identify systematic along arc variations in helium isotope compositions. We find 3He/4He ratios varying from 8.8 RA (Colombia) to 7.4 RA (Ecuador) within the NVZ, and only as high as 6.4 RA in the CVZ (RA is the atmospheric 3He/4He ratio of 1.39 × 10–6). These distinct isotope compositions cannot be explained by variable radiogenic 4He production via slab fluid transport of U and Th in the mantle wedge, since both NVZ and CVZ share similar slab sediment inputs (Th/La ≈ 0.08–0.13). Inst…
Financial institutions’ risk profile and contribution to the sustainable development goals
2021
This study analyses the impact of Spanish financial institutions’ risk profile on their contribution to the 2030 Agenda. Financial institutions play a significant role in ensuring financial inclusion and sustainable economic growth and usually incorporate environmental and social considerations into their risk management systems. The results show that financial institutions with less capital risk, with lower management efficiency and with higher market risk usually make higher contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to their sustainability reports. The novel aspect of the present study is that it identifies the risk profile of financial institutions that incorpo…
Definitions, measurement and prevalence of sedentary behaviour in adults with intellectual disabilities – a systematic review
2017
Supporting positive change in lifestyle behaviours is a priority in tackling the health inequalities experienced by adults with intellectual disabilities. In this systematic review, we examine the evidence on the definition, measurement and epidemiology of sedentary behaviour of adults with intellectual disabilities. A systematic literature search of PUBMED, EMBASE, MEDLINE and Google Scholar was performed to identify studies published from 1990 up to October 2015. Nineteen papers met the criteria for inclusion in the systematic review. Many researchers do not distinguish between insufficient physical activity and sedentary behaviour. None of the studies reported the reliability and validit…
Effectiveness of the interventions in preventing the progression of pre-frailty and frailty in older adults: a systematic review protocol
2016
REVIEW QUESTION / OBJECTIVE : The objective of this review is to identify the effectiveness of the interventions in preventing progression of pre-frailty and frailty in older adults. More specifically, the review questions are: - What is the effectiveness of interventions in preventing or reducing frailty in older adults? - How does effectiveness vary with degree of frailty? - Are there factors that influence the effectiveness of interventions? - What is the economic feasibility of interventions for pre-frailty and frailty? INCLUSION CRITERIA : Types of participants This review will consider studies that include older adults (female and male) aged 65 years and over, explicitly identified as…
Physical Activity Among Adolescents With Long-Term Illnesses or Disabilities in 15 European Countries.
2017
Physical activity (PA) is an important health-promoting behavior from which adolescents with long-term illnesses or disabilities (LTID) can benefit. It is important to monitor differences across countries in adherence with PA recommendations for health. The aim of this study was to compare PA levels among 15 European countries after disaggregating data by disability. Data from pupils (mean age = 13.6 years, SD = 1.64) participating in the 2013/2014 Health Behavior in School-aged Children study were analyzed to compare adolescents without LTID, with LTID, and with LTID that affects their participation (affected LTID). Logistic regression models adjusted for age and family affluence, stratifi…
Outcomes of a new residential scheme for adults with intellectual disabilities in Taiwan: a 2-year follow-up
2011
Background The Taiwanese government launched a new programme in November 2004 to support adults with intellectual disabilities living in smaller facilities. This paper aims to evaluate the service outcomes of this new residential scheme over 2 years including those residents who moved from an institution and those who moved from their family. Methods A one-group repeated-measures analysis was conducted for five interviews after the adults with intellectual disabilities entered the new environment. Forty-nine adults were initially studied (T1) and 29 adults remained in the homes until the end of the study (T5). Results This study found significant improvements over the 2 years in the resi…
