REDUCING SOCIAL STRATIFICATION VIA DIGITAL SKILLS IMPROVEMENT: THE CASE OF SOCIAL ENTERPRISES IN LATVIA

2021

Latvian social enterprises and social entrepreneurship are becoming important since the adoption of the Social Enterprise Law in 2017 (effective as of 01.04.2018). The number of social enterprises with the legal status and the number of financial grants awarded to social enterprises has been steadily increasing, reaching 161 and 110 of them have received support over 7 million EUR as of 28.02.2021, data of the Register of Social Enterprises. Covid-19 crisis is continuing to have a negative effect on the sector since Latvian social enterprises were not provided any complementary support despite the double-bottom lines they are achieving. Inability to provide structured support mechanisms in …

Service-learning in physical education teacher education: towards a critical and inclusive perspective

2020

The purpose of this study was to analyse the impact of service-learning (SL) in physical education teacher education students (PETEs). The PETEs (n = 169) completed one of the editions of a SL program carried out between 2015–2018. This program consisted of designing and leading motor game sessions to facilitate the inclusion of 116 children with special educational needs (SEN). The program was based on Kolb’s learning stages to promote reflection and critical thinking. Reflective journals were used as an instrument to gather information from their experiences. These data were analysed qualitatively through a multiphase approach, initial open-coding and axial coding, using NVivo (10) softwa…

Street art e rigenerazione urbana?

As Capable as Other Students: Tanzanian Women with Disabilities in Higher Education

2015

Globally, persons with disabilities are underrepresented in higher education. In sub-Saharan Africa, where opportunities for higher education are especially limited, women are unlikely to continue their education. This research investigates women in Tanzanian higher education with the double marginalisation of being a woman and having disabilities. The women were interviewed on what factors enabled access and participation for their educational success. A thematic analysis of qualitative data was applied. All of the women interviewed were motivated to complete their degrees. Key enabling factors were encouragement from their families and previous teachers, full participation in student life…

Managing Teachers' Job Attitudes: The Potential Benefits of Being a Happy and Emotional Intelligent Teacher

2021

According to the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions, the frequency of positive emotions is associated with the development of positive attitudes, cognitions, and behaviors in organizational contexts. However, positive and negative attitudes at work might also be influenced by different personal and job resources. While emotional intelligence has been significantly associated with positive job attitudes and personal well-being, no studies have yet examined the joint role of teacher happiness and emotional intelligence in key teacher job attitudes. The present study assesses whether emotional intelligence interacts with levels of teacher happiness to jointly explain important teach…
