Virtual Medical Communication in English. A Corpus-based Analysis of Inclusive we, us and our in the Intercultural Clinical Blog
2013
Blogs play a very important role in web-based communication as they represent ever-increasing worldwide tools in both everyday and professional interaction (Crystal 2007; Herring 1996, 2007). Similarly to all writers in general, bloggers use persuasive techniques to attract readers’ attention and make them share their points of views and opinions. The use of inclusive pronouns and possessives fulfils pragmatic persuasive functions. The aim of this work was to investigate how the first-person plural personal pronouns we and us and the first-person plural possessive adjective our were used in an intercultural blog in the medical field, namely Clinical blog, of the British Medical Journal (BMJ…
Precision Measurement of the Mass and Lifetime of the Xi(-)(b) Baryon
2016
We report on measurements of the mass and lifetime of the Ξ[- over b] baryon using about 1800 Ξ[- over b] decays reconstructed in a proton-proton collision data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb[superscript -1] collected by the LHCb experiment. The decays are reconstructed in the Ξ[- over b] → Ξ[0 over c]π[superscript -], Ξ[0 over c] → pK[superscript -]K[superscript -]π[superscript +] channel and the mass and lifetime are measured using the Λ[0 over b] → Λ[+ over c]π[superscript -] mode as a reference. We measure M(Ξ[- over b] - M(Λ[0 over b]) = 178.36 ± 0.46 ± 0.16 MeV/c[superscript 2], (τ[subscript Ξ[- over b]/τ[subscript Λ[0 over b]) = 1.089 ± 0.026 ± 0.011, where…
S’attaquer à la suprématie du masculin sur le féminin le français inclusif dans les publications des universités françaises dans les réseaux sociaux
2021
This paper aims to examine the use of inclusive French in the Internet publications of Paris universities on their social media. Three higher education institutions were selected: Paris Dauphine-PSL University, Gustave Eiffel University, and Sorbonne Paris North University. The publications were obtained from Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Firstly, the groups of people to whom the use of inclusive French referred were considered. The second question was about the practices used to make the French language inclusive. Eight practices were observed and are described in the paper. Also, the frequency of gender-neutral language was a point of interest. The research corpus is available online…
Educational research from Tanzania 1998–2008 concerning persons with disabilities: What can we learn?
2014
The global Education For All process and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities have increased the attention given to marginalised and excluded groups showing the need to enhance the education of persons with disabilities. In Sub-Saharan Africa a number of poorly disseminated studies investigate education of persons with disabilities. This paper provides an analysed overview of a decade of Tanzanian studies and reports on the education of persons with disabilities produced from 1998 to 2008. Key findings are highlighted and gaps in the research identified and suggestions are offered for future investigations. The education of persons with disabilities needs to be addre…
