The Activation Status of the TGF-β Transducer Smad2 Is Associated with a Reduced Survival in Gastrointestinal Cancers: A Systematic Review and Meta-A…

2019

Aberrant function of Smad2, a crucial member of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) signaling, is associated with the development of malignancies, particularly in the gastrointestinal district. However, little is known about its possible prognostic role in such tumor types. With the first meta-analysis on this topic, we demonstrated that the lack of the activated form of Smad2 (phosphor-Smad2 or pSmad2), which was meant to be the C-terminally phosphorylated form, showed a statistically significant association with an increased risk of all-cause mortality in patients with gastrointestinal cancers (RR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.05–2.37, p = 0.029, I2 = 84%), also after having adjusted for potential…

When a virus (Covid-19) attacks human rights: The situation of asylum seekers in the medico-legal setting

2020

The Covid-19 pandemic is a global health emergency that requires immediate, effective action by governments to protect the health and basic human rights of everyone’s life. Refugees and migrants are potentially at increased risk because they typically live in overcrowded conditions often without access to basic sanitation. Since the beginning of the official lockdown for Covid-19, the medico-legal assessment of physical violence related to obtaining status or other forms of human protection has been frozen.

Are long-haul truck drivers unusually alert? A comparison with long-haul airline pilots.

2020

Abstract Background Recent studies suggest heavy vehicle drivers self-estimate their sleepiness unexpectedly low during night duties. The present study compared sleepiness ratings of long-haul truck drivers with those of long-haul airline pilots during night and non-night duties. In addition, the correspondence between self-rated manifest and predicted latent sleepiness was examined in the two groups. Methods Twenty-two drivers and 33 pilots participated. Their working hours, sleep, on-duty sleepiness, and use of sleepiness countermeasures were measured in naturalistic conditions. Predictions of latent sleepiness were based on the measurements of working hours and sleep using the Sleep/Wake…

The association between appendicitis severity and patient age with appendiceal neoplasm histology—a population-based study

2022

Abstract Purpose Recent studies have reported alarming appendiceal tumor rates associated with complicated acute appendicitis, especially in patients presenting with a periappendicular abscess. However, the data on histology of appendiceal tumors among acute appendicitis patients is limited, especially in patient cohorts differentiating between uncomplicated and complicated acute appendicitis. We have previously reported the association of increased appendiceal tumor prevalence with complicated acute appendicitis in this population-based study. The objective of this secondary analysis was to evaluate the association of both appendicitis severity and patient age with appendiceal tumor histol…

P046 Occupational exposures and gastric cancer risk in the MCC-spain case-control study

2016

Objective To explore the relationship between gastric cancer (GC) and occupational exposures. Methods A total of 382 incident GC cases and 2,846 randomly selected population controls with occupational information were included from the MCC-Spain study, a population-based multicase-control study. Occupation was coded according to the Spanish National Classification of Occupations 1994. Occupational exposures were assessed by the MatEmEsp Job Exposure Matrix. ORs and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated by unconditional logistic regression adjusting for matching variables and education. Results In men, a statistically significant increased risk of GC, was found for ‘Employed ski…

A novel rationale for targeting FXI: Insights from the hemostatic miRNA targetome for emerging anticoagulant strategies

2018

Abstract The treatment and prevention of thrombosis is currently under a period of rapid change with the replacement of traditional anticoagulant vitamin K antagonists, which impair the biosynthesis of a wide range of blood coagulation factors, with direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), which specifically target factors FXa or FIIa. Nevertheless therapeutic targeting of blood coagulation is an inherently difficult task as it interferes with the delicate balance of pro- and anticoagulant activities. Although anticoagulants are employed in millions of thrombophilic patients worldwide each year, for a growing population with comorbidities who exhibit an increased risk of bleeding with DOAC treat…

Achievement perceived, parenting, internet use and adolescent behavior

2019

Sagittal Plane Hip, Knee, and Ankle Biomechanics and the Risk of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury: A Prospective Study

2018

Background: Stiff landings with less knee flexion and high vertical ground-reaction forces have been shown to be associated with an increased risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The literature on the association between other sagittal plane measures and the risk of ACL injuries with a prospective study design is lacking. Purpose: To investigate the relationship between selected sagittal plane hip, knee, and ankle biomechanics and the risk of ACL injury in young female team-sport athletes. Study Design: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A total of 171 female basketball and floorball athletes (age range, 12-21 years) participated in a vertical drop jump test usin…

Polycystic ovary syndrome: metabolic consequences and long-term management.

2014

Young women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) present an increased risk for type II diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The prevalence of altered glucose tolerance ranges between 20 and 35 % in patients while the prevalence of type II diabetes ranges between 2 and 8 % and seems related to body weight and ethnic group. Moving from the young fertile age to the 40s and the menopause the prevalence of type II diabetes continues to increase compared to the general female population and may reach 10-16 % of PCOS women. However, prevalence of altered glucose tolerance does not increase. Also cardiovascular risk is increased in a large part of young PCOS women but this risk tends to be normal…

Stem cells and new intervention measures as emerging therapy in cardiac surgery

2020

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) presents a great burden for elderly patients, their caregivers, and health systems. Structural and functional alterations of vessels accumulate throughout life, culminating in increased risk of developing CVD. Several inflammatory pathway are involved in vascular ageing. The growing elderly population worldwide highlights the need to understand how aging promotes CVD in order to develop new strategies to confront this challenge. In this review we analyzed the role of stem cells and new intervention measures as emerging drugs for vascular aging.Choroby układu krążenia (CVD) są ogromnym obciążeniem dla osób w podeszłym wieku i ich opiekunów, a także systemów opiek…
