Can a snow structure model estimate snow characteristics relevant to reindeer husbandry?
2014
Snow affects foraging conditions of reindeer e.g. by increasing the energy expenditures for moving and digging work or, in contrast, by making access of arboreal lichen easier. Still the studies concentrating on the role of the snow pack structure on reindeer population dynamics and reindeer management are few. We aim to find out which of the snow characteristics are relevant for reindeer in the northern boreal zone according to the experiences of reindeer herders and is this relevance seen also in reproduction rate of reindeer in this area. We also aim to validate the ability of the snow model SNOWPACK to reliably estimate the relevant snow structure characteristics. We combined meteorolog…
PEMODELAN GEOGRAPHICALLY WEIGHTED REGRESSION (GWR) PADA PERSENTASE KRIMINALITAS DI PROVINSI JAWA TIMUR TAHUN 2017
2020
Crime is everything that exists in Indonesia. Based on BPS data in 2018, East Java Province ranks first in the Province of North Sumatra and the Special Capital Region of Jakarta. This research was conducted to determine the factors that support crime in each Regency / City of East Java Province. The method used in this research is Weighted Geographic Regression (GWR). Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) is one of the statistical methods used to model variable responses with regional or area-based predictor variables. Based on the GWR results, it is recognized as a variable Population Density Percentage (X1), Open Unemployment Rate (X2), Poor Population (X3), Population who are Victims…
The spatial distribution of population exposure to outdoor air pollution in Valencia (Spain) and its association with a privation index
2013
A geometrical framework for f –statistics
2020
AbstractA detailed derivation of the f–statistics formalism is made from a geometrical framework. It is shown that the f–statistics appear when a genetic distance matrix is constrained to describe a four population phylogenetic tree. The choice of genetic metric is crucial and plays an outstanding role as regards the tree–like–ness criterion. The case of lack of treeness is interpreted in the formalism as presence of population admixture. In this respect, four formulas are given to estimate the admixture proportions. One of them is the so–called f4–ratio estimate and we show that a second one is related to a known result developed in terms of the fixation index FST. An illustrative numerica…
Drivers of Competitiveness in European High-Tech Industries
2019
Our paper builds on the importance of high-tech manufacturing and knowledge-intensive services as significant competitiveness and economic growth drivers in the European Union and offers a fresh approach of the study on the competitiveness of secondary and tertiary high-tech industries across EU member states. Our analysis covers the 2008–2015 period and includes twelve old and new EU members. We opt for a balanced panel data approach in OLS and ARIMA frameworks to investigate the competitiveness of high-technology industries in the EU with the aim of uncovering the nature of the main explanatory factors behind their performance. Our results show that the number of persons employed and the …
Drivers of CO2 emissions in the former Soviet Union: A country level IPAT analysis from 1990 to 2010
2013
There are a small number of countries that have managed to decrease emissions over the last two decades e most of them emerged from the FSU (former Soviet Union ). CO2 emissions for these countries combined have decreased by 35% between 1990 and 2010, while global emissions increased by 44%. Most studies investigate the FSU as a single block ignoring the significant and persistent diversity among countries in the region. This study is the first providing detailed country by country analyses determining factors for changes in post-Soviet republics by applying a disaggregated version of the commonly used (IPAT) index decomposition analysis including energy intensity, affluence industrializati…
Decomposition analysis of bioresources: Implementing a competitive and sustainable bioeconomy strategy in the Baltic Sea Region
2021
Bioeconomy development has become one of the new trends in policy design and research. This study looks at biotic resource extraction in the Baltic Sea region countries providing detailed country by country analyses of factors affecting changes in resource extraction. The study is based on the index decomposition analysis including factors related to bioeconomy strategies such as the population, share of people employed in bioeconomy, labour intensity, biotic resource extraction productivity, share of bioeconomy, export intensity, and share of bioresource export. The main factors increasing biotic resource extraction were the growth in labour material intensity, biotic extraction productivi…
<title>Refractive properties of separate erythrocytes of Chernobyl clean-up workers at different pH</title>
2000
This study is focused on the modifications in erythrocytes of Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident clean-up workers as a late health effect of short-term impact of high level radioactive contamination. As a result, a new method based on erythrocyte (RBC) refractive index properties at different pH has been elaborated. According to the light dispersion theory for fluids refractive index is associated with molecules mass m. This feature is widely used for estimation of cell dry mass. But there is another refractive index dependency from molecules charge q regardless of its sing. This feature is not being used for cell quantitative and qualitative characterization. In this study, RBC were in…
2020
The objective of this study was to analyze the associations of various individual- and environmental-related factors with subgroups of daily, frequent, moderate and low moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) among children and adolescents. Data were obtained from the Finnish School-age Physical Activity (FSPA) study 2016 from 4677 national representative 11-, 13-, and 15-year-old children and adolescents. MVPA and individual- and environmental-related factors were assessed by a questionnaire and analyzed by two-level logistic regression. Seventeen of the twenty-one variables were statistically significantly associated with MVPA. However, only three variables were statistically signif…
Genetic risk profiles for a childhood with severely overweight
2013
Summary What is already known about this subject Genome-wide association studies have identified susceptibility loci, conferring only small effects to obesity. We selected 12 from the most accepted susceptibility genes to overweight, which have been corroborated in different populations and series of thousands of adult individuals. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms variants can have a cumulative effect on common forms of obesity, to create a genetic risk score. What this study adds We concentrated on 109 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in 12 loci previously reported in association to body mass index at genome-wide significant level, for individuals of European ancestry. To iden…
