Gating Patterns to Proprioceptive Stimulation in Various Cortical Areas : An MEG Study in Children and Adults using Spatial ICA

2020

Proprioceptive paired-stimulus paradigm was used for 30 children (10–17 years) and 21 adult (25–45 years) volunteers in magnetoencephalography (MEG). Their right index finger was moved twice with 500-ms interval every 4 ± 25 s (repeated 100 times) using a pneumatic-movement actuator. Spatial-independent component analysis (ICA) was applied to identify stimulus-related components from MEG cortical responses. Clustering was used to identify spatiotemporally consistent components across subjects. We found a consistent primary response in the primary somatosensory (SI) cortex with similar gating ratios of 0.72 and 0.69 for the children and adults, respectively. Secondary responses with similar …

The “Seili-index” For The Prediction of Chlorophyll-α Levels In The Archipelago Sea of The Northern Baltic Sea, Southwest Finland

2021

AbstractTo build a forecasting tool for the state of eutrophication in the Archipelago Sea, we fitted a Generalized Additive Mixed Model (GAMM) to marine environmental monitoring data, which were collected over the years 2011–2019 by an automated profiling buoy at the Seili ODAS-station. The resulting “Seili-index” can be used to predict the chlorophyll-α (chl-a) concentration in the seawater a number of days ahead by using the temperature forecast as a covariate. An array of test predictions with two separate models on the 2019 data set showed that the index is adept at predicting the amount of chl-a especially in the upper water layer. The visualization with 10 days of chl-a level predict…

Increasing the drying efficiency of cylinder drying

2011

This PhD Thesis concentrates on paper drying: first on the drying rate in a cylinder covered with fabric, enhanced using hot air impingement through the fabric, and its potential effects on paper quality, and second, on the heat transfer rate from hot steam to paper through the cylinder shell. Cylinder drying is a drying method where a heated surface in contact with paper causes water removal from the latter by evaporation. Impingement through the fabric of hot air has been suggested to cause increase in the water removal and drying of paper. Increase in the drying rate by impingement of hot air was confirmed by laboratory tests and by simulations. In laboratory tests the increase in the dr…

Changes in Oxidative Stress Index and Lipid Peroxidation Product in the Brain of Rats with Lesion of Central Dopaminergic System after Propofol Admin…

2019

Propofol is a commonly used intravenous anesthetic agent with antioxidant properties. However, the effect of propofol on oxidative stress index (OSI) and lipid peroxidation in Parkinson’s disease is still unknown. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of propofol on OSI and malondialdehyde (MDA) level in the selected brain regions of the rats with Parkinson’s disease (PD). 32 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: I- control group, II- group with PD, III-control group with propofol, IV-PD group with propofol. 60mg/kg of propofol was given to the 8-weeks-old rats intraperitoneally, and the selected parts of the rats’ brains (frontal cortex, striatum, thalamus and hippocampu…

Factors explaining the interest margin in the banking sectors of the European Union

2003

Abstract This study analyses the interest margin in the principal European banking sectors (Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain) in the period 1993–2000 using a panel of 15,888 observations, identifying the fundamental elements affecting this margin. Our starting point is the methodology developed in the original study by Ho and Saunders [Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis XVI (1981) 581–600] and later extensions, but widened to take banks' operating costs explicitly into account. Also, unlike the usual practice in the literature, a direct measure of the degree of competition (Lerner index) in the different markets is used. The results show that the fall of marg…

Ego Impairment Index (EII-2) as a predictor of outcome in short- and long-term psychotherapy during a 5-year follow-up

2022

Objective This study examined the predictive ability of the Rorschach-based Ego Impairment Index (EII-2) on outcome of psychotherapy in different types and durations of therapy. Method A total of 326 outpatients suffering from depressive or anxiety disorders were randomized into receiving solution-focused (n = 97), short-term psychodynamic (n = 101), or long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (n = 128). Psychotherapy outcome assessments during the 5-year follow-up period covered psychiatric symptoms, social functioning, and work ability. Results Lower EII-2 values, which indicate less problematic ego functioning, were found to predict faster improvement in both short-term therapies as compare…

Altered EEG Oscillatory Brain Networks During Music-Listening in Major Depression

2021

To examine the electrophysiological underpinnings of the functional networks involved in music listening, previous approaches based on spatial independent component analysis (ICA) have recently been used to ongoing electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). However, those studies focused on healthy subjects, and failed to examine the group-level comparisons during music listening. Here, we combined group-level spatial Fourier ICA with acoustic feature extraction, to enable group comparisons in frequency-specific brain networks of musical feature processing. It was then applied to healthy subjects and subjects with major depressive disorder (MDD). The music-induced oscil…
