Comparison between the effect of adding microhydroxyapatite and chitosan on surface roughness and Microhardness of resin modified and conventional gl…

2019

Background This study aimed to compare the effect of chitosan (CH) and hydroxyapatite (HP) on the surface roughness and microhardness of a conventional glass ionomer cement (CGIC) and a resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC). Material and Methods 60 disk-shaped specimens (2mm x 6mm) were prepared in 6 groups; group I: CGIC, group II: RMGIC, group III: CGIC + 15% volume CH solution in liquid, group IV: CGIC +10% weight micro-HP in powder, group V: RMGIC + 15% volume CH, group VI: RMGIC + 10% weight micro-HP. After storage in deionized water at room temperature for 24 hours, the surface roughness and microhardness of the specimens were measured using a surface profilometer and Vickers mi…

Effect of resin thickness, and curing time on the micro-hardness of bulk-fill resin composites

2015

Background: Bulk-fill resin composite has been introduced, their manufacturers claimed that they can be applied in bulks of 4mm, without necessitating a prolonged curing time, or a light curing unit with increased irradiance. Thus this study was conducted to evaluate the effect of resin thickness, and curing time on the micro-hardness of two bulk -fill resin composites; Tetric Evo-Ceram [TE], and X-trafil [XF]. Material and Methods: 120 cylindrical specimens were prepared, and divided into 24 groups (n=5/group), representing the two bulk-fill resin composites, three different material thicknesses (2, 3 and 4 mm) and the four curing times used in the study (10, 20, 40, and 60 seconds). The s…

Effects of the indentation process on fatigue life of drilled specimens: optimization of the distance between adjacent holes

2016

The generation of permanent compressive stresses around the holes is recognized as a valuable mean to delay the onset and propagation of the defects and to extend the fatigue life of the mechanical components. In the work, a bilateral indentation process, performed on each side of the component, is widely used in order to create a residual circumferential stress field around the area to be drilled and that persists after the drilling operation. In order to evaluate the process parameters and to identify optimal geometric solutions, several static and fatigue tests are conducted on AW 6082-T6 aluminum alloy specimen where two holes are created. In particular, experimental tests on only drill…

Virtual machine concept applied to uncertainties estimation in instrumented indentation testing

2019

The basis of the virtual machine concept, which is commonly used in coordinate measuring machines, was implemented to determine more realistic uncertainties on the estimation of the elastic modulus obtained from nanoindentation tests. The methodology is based on a mathematical model applied to simulate the testing process and to evaluate the uncertainties through Monte Carlo simulations whose application depends on the studied system (instrument, material, scale, etc.). The methodology was applied to the study of fused silica (FQ) and steel samples tested in a nanoindentation system. The results revealed that the most relevant sources of uncertainty are related to the calibration procedure,…

Deformation behavior of nanostructured ZnO films on glass

2012

Abstract Nanostructured ZnO films on glass substrate were studied by nanoindentation, scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. The films were obtained by a straightforward mechanoactivated oxidation method. The morphology of the obtained films was grained with a grain size in the range 50–100 nm and the thickness was approximately 2 μm. A detailed deformation behavior of ZnO films, critical parameters and indentation induced plastic deformation mechanisms were determined in correlation to bulk ZnO, Si single crystal and commercial ZnO films. In comparison to a single crystal ZnO, nanostructured films exhibit increased hardness (9 GPa); however, the Young's modulus is decreased (120 GP…

Smart polymeric coatings for damage visualization in substrate materials

2012

For damage indication needs in polymer composites, three smart acrylic coatings based on microencapsulated crystal violet lactone leuco dye with embedded developer silica gel and methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate were elaborated. Damage visualization ability upon duralumin substrates was tested. Indentation tests were conducted in the interval of 0.0005–0.55 J of mechanical work. Digital image analysis was used for evaluation of the visual response in the form of “bruise” spots. The measure of response intensity was relative excess of blue color above achromatic gray in the scanned images of the “bruise” spots. This technique allowed detecting influence of the coating formulations onto the substrat…

Cutting performance and indentation behaviour of diamond films on Co-cemented tungsten carbide

2000

Abstract Diamond films were grown by Hot Filament Chemical Vapour Deposition (HFCVD) on differently pretreated ISO-grade K10 cemented carbide (WC-5.8 wt.%Co) cutting inserts. Etching with diluted HNO3 and surface roughening by Murakami's reagent were used as substrate pretreatments. The adhesion of the films was evaluated by indentation tests. In order to obtain a reliable estimation of the adhesion by the slope of the crack radius–indentation load curves, a careful SEM measurement of the crack lengths was performed. Bare and diamond-coated cutting inserts were used for turning tests of Al2O3-reinforced aluminum alloy. The adhesion levels obtained from the indentation curves correlated well…

Viscoelasticity of pore-spanning polymer membranes derived from giant polymersomes

2010

We show how the viscoelastic properties of membranes formed from poly(butadiene)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PB130-b-PEO66) block copolymers can be locally accessed by atomic force microscopy. Polymer membranes are spread on microstructured porous silicon substrates from PB130-b-PEO66 vesicles by decreasing the osmotic pressure of the solution. Local viscoelastic properties of the pore-spanning polymer membranes were obtained from site-specific indentation experiments. Elastic moduli of these membranes were in the order of few MPa, while the elastic moduli of cross-linked membranes considerably increased to few GPa. Furthermore, the energy dissipation and velocity dependence of the hysteres…

Mechanical Behaviour of a Green Sandwich Made of Flax Reinforced Polymer Facings and Cork Core

2015

Abstract This work investigates the flexural behavior of a composite sandwich made of flax fibers reinforced skin facings and an agglomerated cork core, to be employed as an eco-friendly solution for the making of structural components of small sailing boats. An experimental mechanical characterization of the strength and stiffness flexural behavior of the proposed sandwich is carried out, providing a comparison of performances from three implemented assembling techniques: hand-lay-up, vacuum bagging and resin infusion. Sandwich beams have been tested under three point bending (TPB) at various span lengths. A procedure is also proposed and implemented to consider the potential influence of …
