Evolution of worldwide stock markets, correlation structure and correlation based graphs

2011

We investigate the daily correlation present among market indices of stock exchanges located all over the world in the time period Jan 1996 - Jul 2009. We discover that the correlation among market indices presents both a fast and a slow dynamics. The slow dynamics reflects the development and consolidation of globalization. The fast dynamics is associated with critical events that originate in a specific country or region of the world and rapidly affect the global system. We provide evidence that the short term timescale of correlation among market indices is less than 3 trading months (about 60 trading days). The average values of the non diagonal elements of the correlation matrix, corre…

Economie assessments on the use of wired and wireless recharging systems in Italian and European market

2017

The conductive charging method for the electric vehicles is the most widespread, since it is the simplest and has higher returns. In the last years, alternative charging technologies have been investigated. Between these wireless charging systems have been large diffusion and have been commercialized by some manufacturer. Wireless charging systems for electric vehicles have some advantages respect the wired ones, not obliging the user to connect physically the vehicle to the electric charging station. Assuming the efficiency declared by the manufacturer of wireless systems the authors, in this paper, estimate the maximum cost that wireless recharging systems can have to be, however, more fa…

Economic analysis on the use of wired and wireless recharging systems

2017

Wireless charging systems for electric vehicles have some advantages respect the wired ones, not obliging the user to connect physically the vehicle to the electric charging station. However, at the same time, they have disadvantages linked to issues of electromagnetic compatibility and low efficiency. This study considers some scenarios for which both wired and wireless recharging systems can be adopted, with the aim of estimate the efficiency that must be guaranteed by wireless systems, so that its realization could be more favorable with respect to wired one. The estimation is developed by means of classical economic indexes, in the framework of Italian end European markets. Results repo…

Novelties in COPD prognosis: Evolution of survival indexes

2015

Despite several techniques, such as non-invasive ventilation (NIV), have improved the outcome of the acute exacerbation, COPD remains affected by poor prognosis in the medium and long term. Moreover, the task of predicting prognosis remains a major challenge for respiratory physicians. In order to overcome this limitation, several indexes have been proposed to assess the COPD patient in his/her complexity. The rationale is that, by using numerical indexes physicians may improve their clinical judgment to tailor and share therapeutical choices, i.e. referring the patient for surgery or lung transplantation. On this ground, Almagro et al. recently proposed the CODEX index, as the latest evolu…

Thermo-hygrometric comfort in the lecture hall of a library: methodology and experimental evidence.

2012

The present study verifies the thermo hygrometric comfort conditions in subjects of a university library users, evaluating the differences and peculiarities in the data collected at the measurement campaign. Particularities of the investigation is the period studied concerning the time frame of the Middle season, which is not expected to power the air conditioning systems. Based on assumptions on the thermal resistance of clothing in the spring and the metabolic type of subjects, the environmental parameters were monitored in some work position in the reading hall in the library of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Palermo. The article presents analyses of the measure…

Adolescents’ online communication and well-being : Findings from the 2018 health behavior in school-aged children (HBSC) study

2022

Background: Digital transformation has influenced all areas of adolescents’ lives, including the ways adolescents maintain friendships. Interpersonal communication is one of the most common activities while online. Online communication may provide adolescents with opportunities to expand their social contacts, but these encounters can be risky, especially when the communication is with unknown people on the internet. This study examined the associations between different forms of online communication behavior and well-being. Materials and methods: Data were collected from Finnish adolescents as part of the Health Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) study in 2018. The participants were 3…

Scanning optical microscopy modeling in nanoplasmonics

2012

International audience; One of the main purposes of nanoplasmonics is the miniaturization of optical and electro-optical components that could be integrable in coplanar geometry. In this context, we propose a numerical model of a polarized scanning optical microscope able to faithfully reproduce both photon luminescence and temperature distribution images associated with complex plasmonic structures. The images are computed, pixel by pixel, through a complete self-consistent scheme based on the Green dyadic functions (GDF) formalism. The basic principle consists in the numerical implementation of a realistic three-dimensional light beam acting as a virtual light tip able to probe the volume…

A new capability index for dynamic process analysis

2013

Nowadays, the trend to produce with reduced specification limits width and at a low defectives rate seems to be irreversible. In such conditions, reliable evaluation of the process capability level represents a crucial activity to assess the quality related performance of a production process. By adopting the classical approach, such evaluation is performed by verifying the process in-control condition and by evaluating suitable capability indices. However, considering the natural dynamic behavior of production processes, i.e. the process variability over the time domain, the in-control condition characterizes only a part of the production process functioning cycle, the one with the lowest …

[Rt or RDt, that is the question!]

2021

The article compares two of the most followed indices in the monitoring of COVID-19 epidemic cases: the Rt and the RDt indices. The first was disseminated by the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) and the second, which is more usable due to the lower difficulty of calculation and the availability of data, was adopted by various regional and local institutions. The rationale for the Rt index refers to that for the R0 index, the basic reproduction number, which is used by infectivologists as a measure of contagiousness of a given infectious agent in a completely susceptible population. The RDt index, on the other hand, is borrowed from the techniques of time series analysis for the tr…
