Organizational model and operations performance: a longitudinal study of Italian Judicial Courts

The study focuses on six Italian judicial courts that recently implemented a new organizational model based on the so-called "Ufficio Per il Processo" (UPP) and gathers qualitative and quantitative data over a two-year period (pre- and post-UPP). The research investigates the relationship between court clerks' organizational models and operations performance. The results indicate that the different types of organizational models are associated with improved performance when compared to the pre-implementation level depending on the cases’ congestion level the court has to deal with. The findings highlight the importance of considering the organizational structure in optimizing judicial court…

Improved scalable syntheses of mono- and bis-urethane derivatives of ornithine.

2001

In the search for a practical route to ornithine bisurethane derivatives useful for peptide synthesis, we elaborated the simple and efficient (86% yield) synthesis of N(epsilon)-tert-butoxycarbonyl-L-ornithine copper(II) complex (1). This served as substrate for obtaining N(epsilon)-tert-butoxycarbonyl-L-ornithine (2), N(alpha)-benzyloxycarbonyl-N(epsilon)-tert-butoxycarbonyl-L-ornithine (3) and N(alpha)-(9-fluorenyl)methoxycarbonyl-N(epsilon)-tert-butoxycarbonyl-L-ornithine (4). These were synthesized in 94-95% yields and with a purity above 99%.

Direct measurement of the melting temperature of supported DNA by electrochemical method

2003

The development of biosensors based on DNA hybridization requires a more precise knowledge of the thermodynamics of the hybridization at a solid interface. In particular, the selectivity of hybridization can be affected by a lot of parameters such as the single-strand (ss)DNA density, the pH, the ionic strength or the temperature. The melting temperature, T(m), is in part a function of the ionic strength and of the temperature and therefore provides a useful variable in the control of the selectivity and sensitivity of a DNA chip. The electrochemical technique has been used to determine the T(m) values when the probe is tethered by a DNA self-assembled monolayer (SAM). We have built a speci…

The Androgen Excess and PCOS Society criteria for the polycystic ovary syndrome: the complete task force report.

2009

Abstract OBJECTIVE: To review all available data and recommend a definition for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) based on published peer-reviewed data, whether already in use or not, to guide clinical diagnosis and future research. DESIGN: Literature review and expert consensus. SETTING: Professional society. PATIENTS: None. INTERVENTION(S): None. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): A systematic review of the published peer-reviewed medical literature, by querying MEDLINE databases, to identify studies evaluating the epidemiology or phenotypic aspects of PCOS. RESULT(S): The Task Force drafted the initial report, following a consensus process via electronic communication, which was then reviewed and c…

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the polychaete Sabella spallanzanii, as a reliable bioindicator, by GCMS

2012

Every year 230.000 tons of PAHs enter the marine environment, resulting ubiquitously distributed worldwide. These compounds are aromatic molecules of special concern because of their toxic and carcinogenic properties. As a consequence of their hydrophobic nature, in aquatic environments, PAHs rapidly tend to associate with particulate matter and sediments represent the most important reservoir. In the present study the level of PAHs in the sessile filter-feeder polychaete Sabella spallanzanii was assessed. In particular, the concentration of PAHs was determined in polychaetes (body and tube) collected from three Sicilian areas, subject to different anthropic pressure. A transplanting experi…

Low-Dimensional Representations of Earth System Processes

2020

In times of global change, we must closely monitor the state of our planet in order to understand gradual or abrupt changes early on. In fact, each of the Earth's subsystems-i.e. the biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, and anthroposphere-can be analyzed from a multitude of data streams. However, since it is very hard to jointly interpret multiple monitoring data streams in parallel, one often aims for some summarizing indicator. Climate indices, for example, summarize the state of atmospheric circulation in a region, e.g. the Multivariate ENSO (El Ñino-Southern Oscillation) Index. Indicator approaches have been used extensively to describe socioeconomic data too, and a range of …

Assessment of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke in young adolescents following implementation of smoke-free policy in Italy.

2009

We investigated acute and chronic exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) in a cohort of young adolescents using urinary cotinine and hair nicotine testing after recent implementation of Italian smoke free legislation. Study subjects were 372 Italian young adolescents, between 10 and 16 years of age from the principal city of Sicily, Palermo. Urine and hair samples were collected between November 2005 and May 2006, when the legislation to ban smoking in all the enclosed places of employment (including bars, restaurants, pubs) was completely enforced. An exhaustive questionnaire including sociodemographic characteristics and active and passive exposure to cigarette smoking was complete…

Bloodstains on Leather: Examination of False Negatives in Presumptive Test and Human Hemoglobin Test.

2017

Presumptive tests for blood are very simple and sensitive tests used in the search for evidence. They also provide initial information on the nature of stains. A second test can confirm their nature. However, these tests can present false–negative results for different reasons. Some of those reasons have been studied, while others, those caused by the substrate material that contains the stain, are less well known. This work studies the effect of one component of a leather substrate—quebracho extract—on presumptive and human hemoglobin blood tests. Assays were performed using samples of blood dilutions contaminated with quebracho extract and others formed on a substrate containing the conta…
