Searching the internet for learning materials through didactic indicators
2007
Internet offers a huge amount of didactic materials that can be used in creating new online courses. However, those materials need a deep analysis to understand their context and contents before their potential use. As a consequence, the search of didactic material in internet is often quite tedious and time consuming so the searcher usually limits his/her analysis to the first found web pages . To help users in finding efficiently and timely the most appropriate online materials, we have developed a system, called SAXEF (System for Automatic eXtraction of lEearning object Features), that is capable to automatically extract the didactic indicators (a sort of DNA) of any web page (or group o…
Energy analysis of the buildings stocks. Scaling from national to regional and urban contexts
The applicability of the indicators proposed by the European and national regulatory framework for the verification of the advancement of the plans: …
2014
Indicators are essential operational tools for the preparation of plans, to monitor their progress and for the ex-post verification of the results achieved. As it is known, there is a large corpus of indicators, both at Community and national Italian level, to which designers and planners can refer. However, it remains to verify the effectiveness of general validity parameters in describing the progress of the implementation of plans, which must be necessarily compared with more limited territorial situations. This paper addresses this problem, with reference to the Energy and Environmental Plan of the Sicilian Region (PEARS), comparing the themes proposed at European (Eurostat) and the Ita…
Life-Cycle Assessment of Buildings
2019
The chapter presents a complete overview of LCA applied to buildings. After a brief introduction on the origin and developments of the LCA, it describes four steps of the LCA methodology, according to the framework of the International standards of ISO 14040 series. Then, the authors focus on the LCA applied to the building sector and on the standard EN 15978. They identify the main issues related to the application of the methodology to buildings, such as the selection of the functional unit, the systems boundaries, the environmental indicators, etc. In the context of the sustainability, a brief overview on the economic and social aspects of buildings and on the available building life-cycl…
I piani energetici ambientali regionali. Applicabilità degli indicatori proposti a scala nazionale (ISPRA) ed europea (EUROSTA).
2014
As it is well known, indicators represent effective tools in the aim of designing, monitoring and verifying energy and environmental Masterplans. At this regard, a large number of indicators do exist both at European and country Italian levels which designers can usefully apply to. Anyway, being such indicators released at a general European level, their actual verifiability should be properly checked when them are applied to the local level of a given territory. In the present work this issue is approached by referring to the Sicilian Energy and Environmental Masterplan (PEARS): on purpose, the themes proposed at European (Eurostat) and country Italian (ISPRA) levels have been compared wit…
A hierarchical framework for the measurement of maintenance efficacy and efficiency using performance indicators
2014
Maintenance plays an important role in achieving the organizational goals so that the measurement of its effectiveness and efficiency has become an essential element of industrial strategy. In literature several Maintenance Key Performance Indicators (MKPIs) are proposed but none structured approach is suggested to select the best set of MKPIs able to synthetically describe a specific maintenance context. The paper proposes a structured methodology for the maintenance performance measurement by means of MKPIs. Firstly, a multi-level hierarchical framework able to synthesize the most meaningful perspectives affecting the performance of the maintenance process is designed. Successively, some …
Structured methodology for selection of maintenance key performance indicators: Application to an oil refinery plant
2017
The novel contribution of the work is the proposal of a structured multi-step methodology that may support the Decision Maker (DM) in the measurement of maintenance performance by means of Maintenance Key Performance Indicators (MKPIs). To this aim, a multi-level hierarchical framework able to synthesize the most meaningful aspects affecting the maintenance results is designed. Then, MKPIs are selected from the literature, assigned to the hierarchical framework and ranked by an Analytic Hierarchy Process-based approach with incomplete comparison matrices. A mathematical model is finally formulated to select the optimal set of MKPIs. The methodology is implemented in an oil refinery plant an…
A Structured Methodology for the Safety Key Performance Indicator Prioritization: A Case Study
2021
Nowadays, companies have become more and more attentive to the management and evaluation of activities, processes and actions related to the safety in workplaces. This attention stems from both the need to comply with law requirements and to improve the productivity of the company by ensuring the reduction of occupational injuries and diseases. Accordingly, performance evaluation is a fundamental step also theorized by the most important guidelines on Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMSs). With this recognition, the present paper provides a methodology to prioritize Safety Key Performance Indicators (SKPIs) starting from an initial set selected from the literature. Refe…
Experimental assessment of the mixing quality in a circular cross-sectional t-shaped mixer for the precipitation of sparingly soluble compounds
2021
Precipitation processes have been successfully proved to be a feasible route to extract high-value products from wastes. However, reactive crystallization is characterized by fast kinetics, especially when highly concentrated solutions are used or sparingly soluble compounds precipitate, thus requiring a fast mixing of the reactants. In this context, T-shaped mixers have been extensively investigated both experimentally and numerically as a mean to achieve a rapid reactants homogenization. Many research efforts have been focused on the analysis of rectangular cross-sectional T-shaped mixers, while less attention has been devoted to the study of circular cross-sectional ones. In the present …
