To successfully learn using open Internet resources, students must be able to critically search, evaluate and select online information, and verify sources. Defined as critical online reasoning (COR), this construct is operationalized on two levels in our study: (1) the student level using the newly developed Critical Online Reasoning Assessment (CORA), and (2) the online information processing level using event log data, including gaze durations and fixations. The written responses of 32 students for one CORA task were scored by three independent raters. The resulting score was operationalized as “task performance,” whereas the gaze fixations and durations were defined as indicators of “pr…
Farmland abandonment in Europe: Identification of drivers and indicators, and development of a composite indicator of risk
2015
Accounting for more than half of the European Union's (EU) territory, agriculture ensures food production, manages important natural resources and supports socio-economic development of rural areas. Moreover, it is estimated that 50% of all plant and animal species (including some of that are listed in the EU Habitat Directive) depend on agricultural practices. The continuation of appropriate agricultural land management is essential to ensure these primary functions. Avoidance of farmland abandonment is therefore an important rationale for the EU's Common Agricultural Policy which requires improved knowledge of this phenomenon at the European level. This study assesses the risk of farmland…
Outlining the impact of intellectual capital accumulation and depletion processes on the performance of an insurance firm: a dynamic resource-based p…
2014
This paper aims to develop a conceptual framework on how Intellectual Capital (IC) accumulation and depletion processes are dynamically interrelated with firm performance. Such a framework makes explicit the relationships between policy levers, strategic resources, drivers, end-results and performance indicators through a Dynamic Resource-based perspective. Such an approach matches the Resource based perspective and the System Dynamics (SD) methodology. This paper argues that in order to explain a firm superior performance, it is not sufficient to look at the endowment of strategic resources in a given moment of time; it is instead required to investigate the dynamics of company strategic r…
Modelling of Water Supply Costs
2017
Water supply tariffs setting is a labour intensive regulatory procedure; currently number of informative and procedural shortages and problems exist. The aim of the current research is improvement of methodology for determination of the substantiated costs for provision of water services. A working hypothesis was advanced to modernize the methodology: the specific costs (/m3) required for the provision of water services in a specific region is a variable multi-parameter function of key performance indicators. There is preferred a benchmark modelling procedure, which is based on the factual cases (declared indicators of water utilities) and synthesis of the general regularity. The model is d…
Control and Trust in Local School Governance
2014
External school inspection and state supervision represent key instruments in many European countries for improving the quality of education. Although some countries, such as England, France, and the Netherlands, have a long tradition of school inspectorates, other countries such as Sweden only recently reintroduced a school inspection system (Johansson O, Holmgren M, Nihlfors E, Moos L, Skedsmo G, Paulsen JM, Risku M, Local Decisions under Central Watch – a new Nordic quality assurance system. In: Moos L (ed) Transnational influences on values and practices in Nordic educational leadership – is there a Nordic model? Springer, Dordrecht, 2013). In Denmark, the relationship between the state…
Perspectives and challenges of small scale plant microalgae cultivation. Evidences from Southern Italy
2020
Abstract In recent years, the cultivation of algae has achieved attention of scientists and practicioniers due to the great variety of products that can be obtained, among which biofuels. The aim of this work is twofold. The first is to perform a profitability analysis of food and biofuel production from microalgae, in a small-scale setting. The second is to assess the economic impact of algae production systems on the dairy farms potentially interested in Southern Italy. The analysis was performed using financial and economic indicators and considering two system management scenarios, namely single and collective. Our results confirm that current microalgae production technology favors bio…
Quality of Inclusive Educational System for Work with Students with Autism Different Needs in Italy
2015
The need for realization of inclusive education, which is the basis of a sustainable education, will require new challenges in the Education System. The system used in Italy can be used as an example. Italy passed avant-garde laws concerning the integration and inclusion of special needs students into the general school system already more than thirty years ago, in the 1970s. However, even after all this time and experience, there are still unresolved problems, which testifies to the complexities of the matter. This research offers an insight into the quality of the existing Italian inclusive education system specifically in relation to students with autism. Thereby it hopes to provide educ…
Performances of the Fault Decoupling Device when unbalanced and multiple faults occur on distribution systems.
2005
Nowadays industrial processes are largely based on electronic devices such as programmable logic controllers and adjustable speed drives. Consequently, industrial equipments became less tolerant towards power supply disturbances. Voltage dips due to faults are surely among the worst disturbances for industrial equipments. A paper machine can be affected by disturbances of only 10% voltage drop lasting for 100 ms. A voltage dip of 75% (of the nominal voltage) with a duration shorter than 100 ms results in material loss in the range of thousands of US Dollars for semiconductors industry [1].
Using Anthocyanin Extracts from Butterfly Pea as pH Indicator for Intelligent Gelatin Film and Methylcellulose Film
2021
Among variety of intelligent food packaging, pH indicator packaging is becoming more popular, which can be made from synthetic and natural compounds. The search for natural pH indicator dyes that can be used in intelligent food packaging systems has recently focused on anthocyanins extracted from plants. Thus, this work aimed to develop and characterize an intelligent tag for pH indicator based on gelatin and methylcellulose-film with butterfly pea extract (BPE). The results showed that the colors of BPE solutions had a tendency to change from red to blue in a pH range of 4.0 to 8.0. The maximum absorption peak moved to a higher wavelength was observed at around 627 nm at pH 8.0 and shifted…
