A practical approach to estimate the degree of binder activity of reclaimed asphalt materials

2019

Using Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) in new asphalt mixtures can reduce the amount of new material required thereby saving money and natural resources. In addition, asphalt mixtures with RA have shown comparable properties and performance to that generally associated with asphalt mixtures made with 100% virgin material. However, RA content in pavement surface layers is still limited due to specification and technical limitations. For higher contents, the aged RA binder must be analysed to accurately determine the requirements for virgin binders and additives while the degree of blending (DOB) between the RA binder and the virgin binder also needs to be quantified. This is not a simple process and g…

Current Predictive Resting Metabolic Rate Equations Are Not Sufficient to Determine Proper Resting Energy Expenditure in Olympic Young Adult National…

2021

Predictive resting metabolic rate (RMR) equations are widely used to determine athletes’ resting energy expenditure (REE). However, it remains unclear whether these predictive RMR equations accurately predict REE in the athletic populations. The purpose of the study was to compare 12 prediction equations (Harris-Benedict, Mifflin, Schofield, Cunningham, Owen, Liu’s, De Lorenzo) with measured RMR in Turkish national team athletes and sedentary controls. A total of 97 participants, 49 athletes (24 females, 25 males), and 48 sedentary (28 females, 20 males), were recruited from Turkey National Olympic Teams at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. RMR was measured using a Fitmate GS (Cosmed, Italy…

The carbon footprint of a knowledge organization and emission scenarios for a post-COVID-19 world

2021

Publisher Copyright: © 2021 The looming climate crisis requires an immediate response, in which organizations, as major contributors, should play a central role. However, these organizations need appropriate tools to measure and mitigate their climate impacts. One commonly applied method is carbon footprint analysis. Carbon footprint analyses have been conducted for various types of organizations, but knowledge organizations, such as universities and research institutes, have received far less attention, because their carbon footprint is often less visible and can be easily underestimated. This study is based on the carbon footprint analysis of one multinational knowledge organization. This…

The commented sentence rejects that the Muñoz Díaz doctrine is applicable to all cases of gypsy marriage. In addition, it considers that the denial of effects to the union celebrated according to said rite is not discriminatory. This conclusion is discussed, understanding that the analysis of the singularities of the gypsy people must lead to the conclusion of the existence of indirect discrimination.

La sentencia y su ejecución en el proyecto dominicano de ley sobre control judicial de la administración pública

2021

The regime of the execution of the sentence is analyzed, starting from the powers of declarative and executive substitution of the contentious-administrative judge. It begins with the reference to the constitutional guidelines of the administrative process. Then, the different modalities of judicial substitution are described in the types of sentences (declarative, constitutive and conviction) regulated in the project, to then refer to the regime of executive seizure of public goods. It ends by describing: the powers granted to the judge to agree indirect measures that assist with the execution of the judgment, the cases of impossibility of execution and the extension of the sentence to thi…

Follow‐up of patients subjected to direct and indirect pulp capping of young permanent teeth. A retrospective study

2021

Abstract Objective A retrospective study of the success rate of direct pulp capping (DPC) and indirect pulp capping (IPC) was carried out in children between 6–14 years‐old, considering separately primary caries or caries affecting teeth with molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH). Material and methods Data were collected in a dental public health service. Following the inclusion criteria, 232 treatments were analyzed. Success was defined by the presence of a functional tooth without clinical signs or symptoms of pulpal or periapical disease. The success rate was correlated to patient gender, the affected tooth and the indication of therapy using the chi‐squared and Fisher exact test. The s…

Resting Energy expenditure in type 2 diabetic patients and the effect of insulin bolus

2014

Aims: Resting energy expenditure (REE) plays a critical role in the regulation of body weight, with important implications in type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, the relationships between REE and T2D have not been extensively evaluated. We compared REE in persons with diabetes and in persons without diabetes. We also investigated the acute effect of insulin on REE and venous lactate, the latter an indirect measure of neoglucogenetic activity. Methods: REE was measured using indirect calorimetry in 14 newly diagnosed, untreated T2D adults and in 14 non-diabetic age-, gender- and body mass index-matched persons. The REE and lactate venous concentrations were also measured in a subgroup of 5 T2D p…

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with higher metabolic expenditure in overweight and obese subjects: A case-control study

2019

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common condition in Western countries. However, their metabolic characteristics are poorly known even though they could be important. Therefore, the objective of this study was to measure resting metabolic parameters in overweight/obese adults with hepatic steatosis compared to controls, matched for age, sex, and obesity level. Hepatic steatosis was diagnosed with liver ultrasound. Energy metabolism was measured with indirect calorimetry: energy expenditure (REE), predicted REE, the ratio between REE and the predicted REE, and the respiratory quotient (RQ) were reported. We measured some anthropometric, body composition, and bio-humoral paramet…

PREVALENCE OF ANTIBODIES ANTI-BARTONELLA HENSELAEIN WESTERN SICILY: CHILDREN, BLOOD DONORS, AND CATS

2011

To evaluate seroprevalence of B. henselae infection both in Sicilian children and healthy blood donors. Furthermore, circulation of Bartonella in the natural reservoir was also studied. Two hundred forty-three children, living in Sicily (Palermo), affected by various diseases, without clinical features suggesting B. henselae infection, together with 122 healthy blood donors were serologically investigated for IgG and IgM antibodies by indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). One hundred twenty stray and 62 pet cats were also analyzed only for IgG. Among children 25.1% had IgG antibodies to B. henselae; 18.5% showed a titer 1:64, 2.4% 1:128, 2.4% 1:256, 0.8% 1:512, 0.4% 1:1024, and 0.4% 1:…
