Tetracycline inhibits the nitric oxide synthase activity induced by endotoxin in cultured murine macrophages

1998

Here we investigate the effects of tetracycline base and of a semi-synthetic tetracycline derivative, doxycycline, on the induction of inducible nitric oxide synthase and, hence, on the production of nitric oxide (NO) by lipopolysaccharide in J774 macrophage cultured in vitro. The treatment of J774 line with tetracycline base (6.25-250 microM) or doxycycline (5-50 microM) dose-dependently decreased the lipopolysaccharide-stimulated (1 microg/ml) inducible NO synthase activity and, consequently, nitrite formation. For instance, the inhibition was 70% for tetracycline base at 250 microM and 68% for doxycycline at 50 microM. The inhibitory effect of tetracyclines was due neither to a reduction…

The synthesis and effect of fluorinated chalcone derivatives on nitric oxide production

2002

Abstract Dimethoxy- and trimethoxychalcone derivatives, with various patterns of fluorination, were synthesized and evaluated for their influence on nitric oxide production. Some of them, chalcones 1 , 5 , 7 , 10 , 11 and 17 , inhibited NO production with an IC 50 in the submicromolar range; 17 is especially noteworthy because of its potency (IC 50 30 nM). These effects were not the consequence of a direct inhibitory action on enzyme activity but the inhibition of enzyme expression.

Novel anti-inflammatory chalcone derivatives inhibit the induction of nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 in mouse peritoneal macrophages

1999

AbstractIn a previous work, we tested a series of chalcone derivatives as possible anti-inflammatory compounds. We now investigate the effects of three of those compounds, CH1, CH8 and CH12, on nitric oxide and prostanoid generation in mouse peritoneal macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide and in the mouse air pouch injected with zymosan, where they showed a dose-dependent inhibition with inhibitory concentration 50% values in the μM range. This effect was not the consequence of a direct inhibitory action on enzyme activities. Our results demonstrated that chalcone derivatives inhibited de novo inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 synthesis, being a novel therapeuti…

Nitric oxide synthase activity is inducible in rat, but not rabbit alveolar macrophages, with a concomitant reduction in arginase activity

1995

Alveolar macrophages were obtained by broncho-alveolar lavage of isolated rat and rabbit lungs and cultured (2.5 × 106 cells/dish) for 18 h in the absence or presence of bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) alone or in combination with cytokines. Thereafter, accumulation of 3H-citrulline (NO synthase activity) and 3H-ornithine (arginase activity) were determined. During incubation of rat alveolar macrophages with 3H-arginine clear amounts of 3H-citrulline and 3H-ornithine (3.8 and 4.6% of the added 3H-arginine, respectively) were formed and most of these metabolites appeared in the incubation medium (ratios extra-/intracellular of 17 and 70 for 3H-citrulline and 3H-ornithine, respectively). …

Analysis and Design of Induction Liquid Metal Processes Using Advanced Numerical Modelling

2019

Comprehensive knowledge of the turbulent flows, heat and mass transfer processes in the melt of induction applications is required to realize efficient metallurgical processes. Therefore, the process oriented development, design and optimization of induction furnaces for melting and casting of metals require praxis oriented simulation and analysis of the complex in-stationary turbulent melt flows and temperature distributions as well as the heat and mass transfer processes in the liquid metal. The studies, presented in this paper, demonstrate the possibilities of using advanced three-dimensional transient numerical modelling for successful simulation of the melt flow as well as heat and mas…

Magnetically Induced Cavitation for the Dispersion of Particles in Liquid Metals

2018

A contactless excitation of cavitation is possible by superposition of induction heating with a static axial magnetic field. This creates an alternating electromagnetic body force in a liquid metal which in turn produces pressure oscillations. Using this method, the onset of cavitation has been clearly observed in various liquid metals (tin, zinc, aluminum, steel SAE 304) at pressure oscillations in the range of 28…50 kPa. The present study aims to extend the previous work by producing steel metal matrix composites (MMC) and assessing the feasibility of the proposed method for particle dispersion in steel. Stainless steel (SAE 316L) samples with different ceramic inclusions, e.g. TiN, Al2O3…

Experimental Comparison of Efficiency Enhancement Algorithms for Three-Phase Induction Motors

2019

This paper presents an experimental comparison of two efficiency improvement algorithms for three-phase induction motors by adopting Loss Model Algorithms (LMAs). The efficiency enhancement is evaluated starting from several simulations for different conditions of load and speed and, then, validated by comparing the experimental results obtained by applying the two control strategies and the traditional Field Oriented Control (FOC). Significant results in terms of efficiency enhancement are presented and discussed.

Adaptive feedback linearizing control of linear induction motor considering the end-effects

2016

This paper proposes an input-output feedback linearization techniques for linear induction motors, taking into consideration the dynamic end-effects. As a main original content, this work proposes a new control law based on the on-line estimation of the induced-part time constant. The estimation law is obtained thanks to a Lyapunov based analysis and thus the stability of the entire control system, including the estimation algorithm, is intrinsically guaranteed. Moreover, with such an approach even the on-lihe variation of the induced-part time constant with the speed is retrieved, thus improving the behavior of previously developed approaches where such a variation vs. speed is considered …

Design and Low-Cost Implementation of an Optimally Robust Reduced-Order Rotor Flux Observer for Induction Motor Control

2007

The aim of this paper is to design and analyze reduced-order observers of the rotor flux of induction motors. The design is carried out in two steps. In the first step, a boundary of the stability region of the observation error is obtained corresponding to a chosen Lyapunov function. In the second step, the boundary is translated into a performance index that is minimized with respect to stator and rotor resistance variations and differences of voltages supplying the motor and those supplying the observer in order to obtain the largest stability region. Implementation of the observer on a low-cost fixed-point digital signal processor using look-up tables is described. Experimental results …
