Realistic model of compact VLSI FitzHugh–Nagumo oscillators

2013

In this article, we present a compact analogue VLSI implementation of the FitzHugh–Nagumo neuron model, intended to model large-scale, biologically plausible, oscillator networks. As the model requires a series resistor and a parallel capacitor with the inductor, which is the most complex part of the design, it is possible to greatly simplify the active inductor implementation compared to other implementations of this device as typically found in filters by allowing appreciable, but well modelled, nonidealities. We model and obtain the parameters of the inductor nonideal model as an inductance in series with a parasitic resistor and a second order low-pass filter with a large cut-off freque…

Novel Three-Phase Multilevel Inverter With Reduced Components for Low- and High-Voltage Applications

2021

In this article, a novel multilevel topology for three-phase applications, having three-level and hybrid N -level modular configurations, enabling low-, medium-, and high-voltage operations, is presented. The proposed topology has several attractive features, namely reduced component count, being capacitor-, inductor-, and diode-free, lowering cost, control-complexity, and size, and can operate in a wide range of voltages and powers. Selected simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed topology. Further, the overall efficiency of the topology and loss distribution in switches are studied. Finally, the key features of the proposed topology in t…

Four Quadrant Switch Based Multiple-Input DC-DC Converter

2021

In this paper, a novel non-isolated multiple input dc-dc converter (MIC) is proposed. The MIC uses four-quadrant switches, only one inductor and capacitor. It is capable of bidirectional operation in non-inverting buck-boost configuration and can accommodate the simultaneous transfer of energy from more than one source of different voltage levels to the DC bus. This MIC is analysed for two inputs in this paper. As compared to existing MICs in literature, the proposed converter utilizes less number of inductors and requires only one switch to integrate any extra energy storage. Different operation modes of the proposed MIC are numerically verified and validated on a high-fidelity hardware-in…

Design and Modeling of an Interleaving Boost Converter with Quasi-Saturated Inductors for Electric Vehicles

2020

This paper is focused on the analysis and modeling of DC-DC boost converters in interleaving configuration exploiting inductors in the quasi-saturation region. The converter is designed to optimize the power density by minimizing the size of the inductors. A simulation study for electric vehicle applications is conducted analyzing the effects of duty cycle and temperature variation on the ripple of the input current giving, moreover, information on the performances and dynamics of the converter for further implementation and optimizations.

Synthesis of a rod-based porous coordination polymer from a nucleotide as a sequential chiral inductor

2021

We report the two-step synthesis of a novel chiral rod-based porous coordination polymer (PCP). The chemical approach consists of the use of a previously prepared bis(ethylenediamine) copper monomer [Cu(en)]2(NO3)2 [where en = ethylenediamine] reacting with the cytidine 5′-monophosphate (CMP) nucleotide. The bis(ethylenediamine) copper compound—stabilized by axial coordination of nitrate counter-anions—reacts in the presence of sodium salt of CMP to yield right-handed copper(II) chains of P helicity with formula [Cu2(en)2(CMP)2]·5H2O (1). The axial coordination of the CMP2- ligands through the N3 and O2 sites (free nitrogen and carbonyl groups) of the cytosine nucleobase and oxygen atoms of…

Equivalent Circuit Modelling of Ferrite Inductors Losses

2018

The modelling of the magnetic losses in the core of ferrite inductors for power conversion circuits has been considered in this paper. On the basis of the Revised Generalized Steinmetz Model (RGSE) an equivalent circuital modelling has been obtained. The losses are modelled as an equivalent resistance connected in parallel to the inductor. The model has been tested under periodic triangular current waveforms.

Impact of Nonlinear Inductor on Efficiency and Power Losses in a SMPS: a Case Study

2022

This paper proposes a comparative analysis focused on losses in two Switched Mode Power Supplies, adopting a linear inductor and an inductor operated up to saturation, respectively. The use of the nonlinear inductor saves weight and cost on the magnetic material, which is of great interest for automotive applications; however, it increases the peak current and can increase losses. The analysis aims to compare, by simulations, the impact on the efficiency of the different current waveforms throughout the converter. The losses are discussed in detail and calculated for each component of the converters.

PCB-Based Planar Inductive Loops for Partial Discharges Detection in Power Cables

2022

Partial discharge (PD) diagnosis tests, including detecting, locating, and identifying, are used to trace defects or faults and assess the degree of aging in order to monitor the insulation condition of medium- and high-voltage power cables. In this context, an experimental evaluation of three different printed circuit board (PCB)-based inductive sensor topologies, with spiral, non-spiral, and meander shapes, is performed. The aim is to assess their capabilities for PD detection along a transmission power cable. First, simulation and experimental characterization are carried out to determine the equivalent electrical circuit and the quality factor of the three sensors. PD activity was studi…

Output Impedance Improvement Using Coupled Inductors

2017

When using a single DC/DC converter with multiple outputs and having a buck topology, which has one filter inductor per output, the designer can choose to couple these outputs together. This paper demonstrates additional benefits of coupling output inductors together. Apart from saving mass and volume, and due to an improved small signal behaviour it also reduces the output impedance of the regulated output. The paper will analyse a seven output push-pull converter used as a space power converter module and verify the theoretical results with experimental measurements.

Min-Type Control Strategy of a DC-DC Synchronous Boost Converter

2019

International audience; This paper presents the analysis and design of a min-type strategy to control a synchronous boost converter in continuous conduction mode. The strategy uses a nonlinear switching surface to establish the change of topology in the converter and is analyzed by means of a sliding-mode control approach. Subsequently, the min-type strategy is modified by a hybrid control formulation, which introduces a hysteresis width and a dwell-time to obtain a finite switching frequency in the start-up and steady-state respectively. The hybrid control formulation is implemented digitally by means of a microprocessor which processes the samples of inductor current and capacitor voltage…
