Summary Background Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of "leaving no one behind", it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2017), we measured progress on 41 of 52 health-related SDG indicators and estimated the health-related SDG index for 195 countries and territories for the period 1990–2017, projected indicators to 2030, and analysed global attainment. Motives for physical activity among active and inactive persons in their mid-30s

2013

The purpose of this study was to examine the motives for leisure-time physical activity among active and inactive men and women in their mid-30s. We used both cross-sectional and longitudinal designs. Altogether, 2308 participants (mean age 33.9 years, 53.4% women) were identified from the population-based FinnTwin16 Cohort. Physically active and inactive individuals were identified on the basis of their leisure-time MET h/day. We evaluated participants' physical activity motivation with a modified version of the Recreational Exercise Motivation Measure. Comparisons between active and inactive individuals were analysed using the Wald test for equality of means, and effect sizes were calcula…

Considerations on the Advantages and Disadvantages of Romania's Accession to the European Union

2015

Abstract After nine years from Romania's accession to the European Union, the advantages are sustained with specific statistical markers, which could have been more positive if the effect of certain identified causes (reduced administrative ability, political instability, extended corruption, high tax evasion etc.) would have been diminished. Counterbalancing the benefits of the accession the opinion polls show the disadvantages. If a poll conducted four years prior to the accession showed that 66% of Romania's population considered that the accession to the European Union would produce positive effects, after six years from the accession things have reversed and 58% of Romanians considered…

2015

International audience; Our presentation takes an interest into the explanation of inequalities in education and more particularly tackles the resources provided by privileged familial backgrounds in order to facilitate educational and social achievement of their children. Our presentation will focus on teachers as parents. For the primary and secondary school level, educational success of teachers' children has been recently demonstrated for the case of France. However the conversion of this academic success into professional or social achievement has not been particularly investigated. Energy poverty in Italy

2014

Despite the existence of two targeted national programmes (Bonus gas and Bonus energia) in Italy there is no official definition of energy poverty (EP). The purpose of this study is to provide the reader with a set of indicators to fill this gap. We present a range of poverty measures which estimate that between 5 and 20 per cent of households was in EP in 2012. A selection based on qualitative criteria suggests the use of a low-income/high-costs indicator modified to include the economically vulnerable households with no heating expenses. According to this statistic the proportion of households in EP during the period 1997-2012 was broadly stable at around 8 per cent. Our simul…

Creating and Governing Cultural Heritage in the European Union

2020

Creating and Governing Cultural Heritage in the European Union: The European Heritage Label provides an interdisciplinary examination of the ways in which European cultural heritage is created, communicated, and governed via the new European Heritage Label scheme. Drawing on ethnographic field research conducted across ten countries at sites that have been awarded with the European Heritage Label, the authors of the book approach heritage as an entangled social, spatial, temporal, discursive, narrative, performative, and embodied process. Recognising that heritage is inherently political and used by diverse actors as a tool for re-imagining communities, identities, and borders, and for gene…

ADHD in the context of Finnish basic education

2014

Students with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are a growing group served under special education services in many western societies. This article describes the history and current state of the services, as well as the assessment procedure. Our conclusion is that the status of students with ADHD in Finnish basic education (Grades 1 to 9) is still unclear. Based on the comparison of the prevalence and the population served in special education we can assume that this group is probably underserved in the Finnish school system. We also present findings from two recent studies among families with ADHD children in Finland. Family viewpoint can contribute to our knowledge and under…

The right to education during the Italian pandemic. E-learning and inequality before the law

2021

Since the beginning of 2020 Italy have tried to give specific and rapid answers to the pandemic crisis, even if with strong compressions and limitations of constitutional fundamental rights, which has led to a huge debate among scholars about: the legislative instruments applied, the kind of legislation used, and on the merit of the measures enacted, having regard to their content and their compatibility with the constitutional principles and provisions, their legitimacy, their proportionality and the (un)fair balancing with the fundamental rights compressed and limited under their effects. Mostly, the crucial balancing work has involved, on one side, the right to health in its individual (…
