Serum irisin levels, precocious myocardial infarction, and healthy exceptional longevity.

2014

Abstract Background Skeletal muscles produce irisin. Growing controversy exists on the association between this myokine and chronic disease risk. On the basis of the potential protective effects that irisin could exert on both vascular function and skeletal muscle mass, we hypothesized that an elevated level of this molecule may contribute to successful aging. Methods Serum irisin levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in disease-free centenarians, young healthy controls, and patients with precocious acute myocardial infarction. Results We found the highest levels of serum irisin in disease-free centenarians (35.3 ± 5.5 ng/mL) compared with young healthy controls (20.7…

Genetic variation of the interleukin-1 family and nongenetic factors determining the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist phenotypes.

2009

The natural anti-inflammatory protein interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) inhibits the activity of IL-1 and is associated with vascular injury and metabolic disorders. We analyzed genetic and nongenetic determinants of the IL-1Ra phenotype. Fifteen haplotype-tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the IL-1α (IL1A), IL-1β (IL1B), and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RN) genes were determined in the Health 2000 survey (n = 6771) and European myocardial infarction (MI) survivors (n = 972). Three SNPs were genotyped in the FINRISK97 (FR97) study (n = 7222). We found 3 IL1RN variants that were associated with the IL-1Ra phenotype in the study populations and remained significant af…

Morbidity in 565 Type 2 Diabetic Patients According to Stage of Nephropathy

1998

Between 1988 and 1992, 565 type 2 diabetic patients were examined for nephropathy and diabetes-associated diseases during hospital treatment. Stages of nephropathy were defined as no clinical sign of nephropathy (N = 280), microalbuminuria (N = 38), overt proteinuria (N = 105), impaired renal function (N = 55), and chronic dialysis therapy (N = 87). In dialyzed patients, HbA1c averaged 6.8%, and, in the other groups, HbA1c was between 7.6% and 8.3% (normal range, 3.8%-6.1%). Cataract was not associated with the severity of nephropathy. Stroke was most common in the stage of renal insufficiency (34%). The following complications, as found in medical history or as current event, showed a sign…

In-hospital complications of acute myocardial infarction in hypertensive subjects

2005

Recent studies have shown a worse in-hospital outcome in hypertensive than in normotensive patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), which has been attributed to more frequent complications. The aim of this study was to investigate clinical patterns, risk factors, and in-hospital complications in hypertensive and normotensive patients with AMI.Of 4994 consecutive patients with AMI admitted to the intensive care unit, hypertensive patients with first infarction (n = 915; mean age 68.8 +/- 11.4 years) and 915 gender- and age-matched normotensive subjects were retrospectively studied. In the univariate analysis, hypertensive subjects presented more frequently non-Q-wave infarction and ST…

Prognostic significance of repetitive ventricular response in chronic coronary artery disease.

1985

A prospective study was conducted in 267 patients with angiographically defined coronary artery disease without documented ventricular tachycardia to determine the prognostic significance of repetitive ventricular response (RVR) after programmed electrical stimulation (PES). The patients were classified inducible if RVR with 3 or more echo beats (RVR greater than or equal to 3) could be induced. 89 patients without previous myocardial infarction (MI), 61 survivors of MI occurring between 6 weeks and 3 months before and 117 patients who had survived longer than 3 months after MI were studied. A standardized stimulation protocol with single (S1S2) and double (S1S2S3) extrastimuli during ventr…

Left ventricular function after acute myocardial infarction

1976

10 patients with their first AMI were studied within the first 48 hours and again after 3 weeks. Central and peripheral haemodynamics (CI, SV, SW, TPR) were examined, including indices of contractility (dp/dtmax) and wall stiffness (deltaP/deltaV, relation deltaP/deltaV to P) of the left ventricle. In the early phase CI and SW, as well as LV dp/dtmax were depressed in accordance with symptoms of LV failure. deltaP/deltaV was increased. Elevation of LVEDP correlated well with ventricular gallop rhythm, but less consistently with LV functional disturbance. During convalescence CI increased uniformly, both in digitalized and non-digitalized individuals. In contrast heart rate, aortic pressure,…

Effect of the -420C/G variant of the resistin gene promoter on metabolic syndrome, obesity, myocardial infarction and kidney dysfunction.

2007

. Objective.  Resistin is an adipokine that has been suggested to be correlated with markers of inflammation and to be predictive of coronary atherosclerosis and type II diabetes in humans. A common single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (−420C/G) in the promoter of resistin is associated with increased resistin plasma levels and susceptibility to type II diabetes. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of the -420C/G polymorphism with metabolic syndrome, obesity, myocardial infarction and kidney disease. Design and results.  First we studied 1542 subjects from the PLIC study (a population based cohort). GG carriers showed an higher prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndro…

C-reactive protein but not soluble CD40 ligand and homocysteine is associated to common atherosclerotic risk factors in a cohort of coronary artery d…

2009

Abstract Objectives One third to one half of the variation in vascular disease occurrence remains unexplained by traditional risk factors. Since atherosclerosis may, in part, be an inflammatory disease, circulating factors related to inflammation may be predictors of cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between common atherosclerotic risk factors and markers of inflammation. Design and methods Serum levels of soluble CD40 (sCD40L), high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and homocysteine (Hcy) were measured in 251 patients selected from a series of 438 subjects affected by previous myocardial infarction, angina or other cardiovascular diseases. Association between platelet glycoprotein Ib-alpha and myocardial infarction: results of a pilot study performed in male and female patients from Sic…

2007

Myocardial infarction (AMI) is a complex multifactorial disorder. Platelet adhesion and thrombosis are pivotal events in the development of atherosclerotic lesions. Occlusive thrombus is almost exclusively initiated by plaque rupture and adhesion of platelets to subendothelial von Willebrand factor (vWf) by its specific platelet receptor, the alpha-chain of glycoprotein (GP) Ib-IX-V complex of the human platelet-specific antigens (HPA). Two polymorphisms have been reported in the sequence of GPIb-alpha. The first, a C/T transition at nucleotide 1018 results in an amino acid dimorphism (Thr/Met) at residue 145 of GPIb-alpha, which is located within the vWF-binding domain of the receptor. The…
