Functional implications of hippocampal volume and diffusivity in mild cognitive impairment.

2005

Abstract Hippocampal atrophy has been related to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early Alzheimer disease (AD), but the diagnostic significance of cross-sectionally determined hippocampal volumes is still ambiguous. Diffusion-Tensor-Imaging (DTI) in MCI patients revealed an association of microstructural changes in hippocampal areas with verbal memory decline. MRI volumetry and DTI were combined to investigate 18 MCI patients attending a memory clinic, and 18 carefully age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Neuropsychological testing, high resolution T1-weighted volume MRI scans, and DTI scans with regions-of-interest in hippocampal areas were applied. Left hippocampal volume was sign…

An investigation of bedside laparoscopy in the ICU for cases of non-occlusive mesenteric ischemia

2017

Background: Acute mesenteric ischemia is a rare affection with high related mortality. NOMI presents the most important diagnostic problems and is related with the higher risk of white laparotomy. This study wants to give a contribution for the validation of laparoscopic approach in case of NOMI. Methods: Thirty-two consecutive patients were admitted in last 10 years in ICU of Paolo Giaccone University Hospital of Palermo for AMI. Diagnosis was obtained by multislice CT and selective angiography was done if clinical conditions were permissive. If necrosis was already present or suspected, surgical approach was done. Endovascular or surgical embolectomy was performed when necessary. Twenty N…

Mutations in the HFE gene and cardiovascular disease risk: an individual patient data meta-analysis of 53 880 subjects.

2008

Background— Whether mutations in the hemochromatosis (HFE) gene increase cardiovascular disease risk is still undetermined. The main reason is the low frequency of the mutations, in particular of the compound C282Y/H63D genotype. We combined the data of 11 observational studies for an individual patient data meta-analysis. Methods and Results— Individual patient data were obtained from published as well as unpublished studies that had information available on the C282Y mutation as well as the H63D mutation in relation to coronary heart disease risk. Individual records were provided on each of the 53 880 participants in 11 studies. In total, 10 541 patients with coronary events were documen…

Detection of Myocardial Infarction by Cardiac Magnetic Resonance in Embolic Stroke Related to First Diagnosed Atrial Fibrillation

2021

Elevated troponin levels are found in a significant number of patients who are diagnosed with acute embolic stroke (AES) after first diagnosed atrial fibrillation (AF). These myocardial injuries, which are known as cardiocerebral infarction (CCI), are potentially caused by coronary embolism and correspond to simultaneous cardiac and cerebral embolisms. However, this severe condition remains poorly understood. In this prospective study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence and the cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) characteristics of CCI.Consecutive patients with first diagnosed AF hospitalized for AES in a neurovascular intensive care unit from 2019 to 2020 were included. Troponin Ic kineti…

Secondary prevention in patients with vascular disease. A population based study on the underuse of recommended medications.

2012

Objectives To investigate the premorbid use of secondary prevention medications in patients with recurrent vascular events. Design Prospective, observational, population based study. Setting The Dijon Stroke Registry and the registry of myocardial infarction of Dijon and Cote d9Or, France. Patients All patients with cerebral ischaemia (ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attacks) or coronary artery disease (CAD) and a history of vascular disease (cerebral ischaemia, CAD or peripheral arterial disease (PAD)) in Dijon, France from 2006 to 2010. Main outcome measures Data on medical history and prior use of treatments were collected. Mutivariate analyses were performed to identify predicto…

Impact of Metabolic Syndrome on Atherosclerotic Burden and Cardiovascular Prognosis

2007

Patients with metabolic syndrome (MS) are at increased risk of cardiovascular atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of MS on cardiovascular prognosis in context with atherosclerotic burden. A total of 811 patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) were included and carotid and leg arteries were examined using sonographic methods. Patients with low (CHD only, n = 428, 52.8%) or high atherosclerotic burden (CHD and peripheral atherosclerosis, n=383, 47.2%) were compared. Patients withor=3 of the following criteria: triglyceridesor=150 mg/dl, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol40 mg/dl (men) and50 mg/dl (women), body mass index30 kg/m2, blood pressureor=130/85 mm H…

Hospital admissions for acute myocardial infarction before and after lockdown according to regional prevalence of COVID-19 and patient profile in Fra…

2020

Background The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound effect on general health care. We aimed to evaluate the effect of a nationwide lockdown in France on admissions to hospital for acute myocardial infarction, by patient characteristics and regional prevalence of the pandemic. Methods In this registry study, we collected data from 21 centres participating in the ongoing French Cohort of Myocardial Infarction Evaluation (FRENCHIE) registry, which collects data from all patients admitted for ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) or non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) within 48 h of symptom onset. We analysed weekly hospital admissions over 8 weeks: the 4 weeks …

Impact of symptomatic atherosclerosis in patients with pulmonary embolism

2019

Atherosclerosis is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality. Associations between venous thromboembolism and atherosclerosis were recently reported. We aimed to investigate the impact of symptomatic atherosclerosis on adverse outcomes in patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) and to identify significant differences among patients with PE stratified by symptomatic atherosclerosis.Patients were selected by screening the nationwide inpatients sample for PE (ICD-code I26) stratified by symptomatic atherosclerosis (composite of coronary artery disease [ICD-code I25], myocardial infarction [ICD-code I21], ischemic stroke [ICD-code I63], and/or atherosclerotic arterial diseases [ICD-code …

Impact of Systemic Atherosclerosis on Clinical Characteristics and Short-Term Outcomes in Patients with Deep Venous Thrombosis or Thrombophlebitis

2020

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) and atherosclerosis are accompanied by substantial cardiovascular mortality; links between both disease entities were reported. We aimed to investigate the impact of systemic atherosclerosis on adverse outcomes in patients with deep venous thrombosis or thrombophlebitis (DVT) and to identify differences in DVT patients with and without systemic atherosclerosis. The German nationwide inpatient sample was used for this analysis. Patients admitted for DVT were included in this study and stratified by systemic atherosclerosis (composite of coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and/or atherosclerotic arterial diseases). We compared DVT patie…

Gender differences in acute myocardial infarction in the era of reperfusion (the MITRA registry).

2002

There is conflicting information about gender differences in presentation, treatment, and outcome after acute ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in the era of thrombolytic therapy and primary percutaneous coronary intervention. From June 1994 to January 1997, we enrolled 6,067 consecutive patients with STEMI admitted to 54 hospitals in southwest Germany in the Maximal Individual TheRapy of Acute myocardial infarction (MITRA), a community-based registry. Women were 9 years older than men, more often had hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and congestive heart failure, and had a history of previous myocardial infarction less often. Women had a longer prehospital delay (45 minutes), had a…
