Pustular lesions and itching in a couple of young migrants

2022

Two teenage illegal migrants from Bangladesh coming from a Libyan port arrived at Lampedusa Island-Italy. The health authorities, having noticed the presence of pustules on the limbs and genitals, suspecting a monkeypox virus infection, have urgently transferred them to the University Hospital of Palermo. They mentioned itching and prior sexual contact. On inspection, itching lesions and pustular lesions with central crusted umbilication and erythematous bases were detected. One of them had also fever and increased c-reactive protein. A real-time polymerase chain reaction assay on vesicle swabs to research monkeypoxvirus DNA and HIV serology was performed for both patients.

Background Schistosoma (S.) haematobium infection is a common cause of genital morbidity in adult women. Ova in the genital mucosal lining may cause lesions, bleeding, pain, discharge, and the damaged surfaces may pose a risk for HIV. In a heterogeneous schistosomiasis endemic area in South Africa, we sought to investigate if young girls had genital symptoms and if this was associated with urinary S. haematobium. Epizootiology of protozoans in farmed salmonids at northern latitudes

Abstract Protozoan ectoparasites were examined in a northern salmonid fish farm over a 10-year period, June 1984–May 1994, by the same researcher, with similar catching and sampling procedures throughout. Husbandry procedures remained constant during the study, e.g., fingerlings were kept in steel tanks and yearlings in both steel tanks and earth ponds. In March and April 2021 several countries temporarily suspended vaccinations with adenoviral vector-based COVID-19 vaccines. Concerns of national regulators particularly regarded very rare cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis after immunization with this type of vaccine. Until now, these adverse events were interpreted as standard hypercoagulable events, but their clinical characteristics suggest that they may actually represent unique thrombotic disorders referred to as immunothrombosis. Finnish salmon resistant to Gyrodactylus salaris: a long-term study at fish farms.

Abstract The occurrence of Gyrodactylus salaris on Baltic salmon ( Salmo salar ), sea trout ( S. trutta m. trutta ) and brown trout ( S. trutta m. lacustris ) was examined from 1984 to 1993 at 4 fish farms (A, B, C and D) that produce smolts for stocking in northern Finland. No G. salaris was found on the sea or brown trout, but it did occur on salmon for 6–7 years at farms B, C and D, the prevalences of infection being 9.5%, 17.7% and 8.8% for salmon yearlings and smolts during that time, respectively, but less than 1.2% for fingerlings at farms B and C. It aims at the discovery and development of novel tuberculosis (TB) vaccines from preclinical research projects to early clinical assessment.
