File system scalability with highly decentralized metadata on independent storage devices
2016
This paper discusses using hard drives that integrate a key-value interface and network access in the actual drive hardware (Kinetic storage platform) to supply file system functionality in a large scale environment. Taking advantage of higher-level functionality to handle metadata on the drives themselves, a serverless system architecture is proposed. Skipping path component traversal during the lookup operation is the key technique discussed in this paper to avoid performance degradation with highly decentralized metadata. Scalability implications are reviewed based on a fuse file system implementation. Peer Reviewed
GekkoFS — A Temporary Burst Buffer File System for HPC Applications
2020
Many scientific fields increasingly use high-performance computing (HPC) to process and analyze massive amounts of experimental data while storage systems in today’s HPC environments have to cope with new access patterns. These patterns include many metadata operations, small I/O requests, or randomized file I/O, while general-purpose parallel file systems have been optimized for sequential shared access to large files. Burst buffer file systems create a separate file system that applications can use to store temporary data. They aggregate node-local storage available within the compute nodes or use dedicated SSD clusters and offer a peak bandwidth higher than that of the backend parallel f…
Modelling estimation and analysis of dynamic processes from image sequences using temporal random closed sets and point processes with application to…
2010
In this thesis, new models and methodologies are introduced for the analysis of dynamic processes characterized by image sequences with spatial temporal overlapping. The spatial temporal overlapping exists in many natural phenomena and should be addressed properly in several Science disciplines such as Microscopy, Material Sciences, Biology, Geostatistics or Communication Networks. This work is related to the Point Process and Random Closed Set theories, within Stochastic Geometry. The proposed models are an extension of Boolean Models in R2 by adding a temporal dimension. The study has been motivated for its application in a multidisciplinary project that combined Statistics, Computer Scie…
AI-IoT Platform for Blind Estimation of Room Acoustic Parameters Based on Deep Neural Networks
2023
Room acoustical parameters have been widely used to describe sound perception in indoor environments, such as concert halls, conference rooms, etc. Many of them have been standardized and often have a high computational demand. With the increasing presence of deep learning approaches in automatic monitoring systems, wireless acoustic sensor networks (WASNs) offer great potential to facilitate the estimation of such parameters. In this scenario, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) offer significant reductions in the computational requirements for in-node parameter predictions, enabling the so-called Artificial Intelligence-Internet of Things (AI-IoT). In this paper, we describe the design a…
Initial results of NEXT-DEMO, a large-scale prototype of the NEXT-100 experiment
2013
NEXT-DEMO is a large-scale prototype of the NEXT-100 detector, an electroluminescent time projection chamber that will search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Xe-136 using 100-150 kg of enriched xenon gas. NEXT-DEMO was built to prove the expected performance of NEXT-100, namely, energy resolution better than 1% FWHM at 2.5MeV and event topological reconstruction. In this paper we describe the prototype and its initial results. A resolution of 1.75% FWHM at 511 keV (which extrapolates to 0.8% FWHM at 2.5 MeV) was obtained at 10 bar pressure using a gamma-ray calibration source. Also, a basic study of the event topology along the longitudinal coordinate is presented, proving that it…

A level set method with Sobolev Gradient and Haralick Edge Detection
2014
Variational level set methods, which have been proposed with various energy functionals, mostly use the ordinary L type gradient in gradient descent algorithm to minimize the energy functional. The gradient flow is influenced by both the energy to be minimized and the norms, which are induced from inner products, used to measure the cost of perturbation of the curve. However, there are many undesired properties related to the gradient flows due to the 2 L type inner products. For example, there is not any regularity term in the definition of this inner product that causes non-smooth flows and inaccurate results. Therefore, in this work, Sobolev gradient has been used that is more efficient …
