The need for huge storage archives rises with the ever growing creation of data. With today’s big data and data analytics applications, some of these huge archives become active in the sense that all stored data can be accessed at any time. Running and evolving these archives is a constant tradeoff between performance, capacity, and price. We present the LoneStar RAID, a disk-based storage architecture, which focuses on high reliability, low energy consumption, and cheap reads. Abstract The vehicle routing problem with trailers and transshipments (VRPTT) is a recent and challenging extension of the well-known vehicle routing problem. Pruning Incremental Linear Model Trees with Approximate Lookahead

Incremental linear model trees with approximate lookahead are fast, but produce overly large trees. This is due to non-optimal splitting decisions boosted by a possibly unlimited number of examples obtained from a data source. To keep the processing speed high and the tree complexity low, appropriate incremental pruning techniques are needed. In this paper, we introduce a pruning technique for the class of incremental linear model trees with approximate lookahead on stationary data sources. A multi-local optimization algorithm

The development of efficient algorithms that provide all the local minima of a function is crucial to solve certain subproblems in many optimization methods. A “multi-local” optimization procedure using inexact line searches is presented, and numerical experiments are also reported. An application of the method to a semi-infinite programming procedure is included.

Random Walks (RWs) have been extensively studied for more than a century [1]. These walks have traditionally been on a line, and the generalizations for two and three dimensions, have been by extending the random steps to the corresponding neighboring positions in one or many of the dimensions. Among the most popular RWs on a line are the various models for birth and death processes, renewal processes and the gambler’s ruin problem. All of these RWs operate “on a discretized line”, and the walk is achieved by performing small steps to the current-state’s neighbor states. Hores: A timetabling system for Spanish secondary schools

Constructing a timetable is a difficult problem faced by every school every year. A feasible solution has to satisfy many different requirements and constraints. A good solution has to provide compact timetables for classes and teachers. In order to help the schools, we have developed HORES, a robust and flexible timetabling system suited to the needs of Spanish secondary schools. HORES runs on a PC and is fast and user-friendly. It may handle virtually every condition required by the schools and obtains good quality solutions in very short computing times. It also allows the user to modify interactively the solutions. HORES is now being used by schools with satisfactory results.

Given a connected graph G, we present a polynomial algorithm which either finds a tour traversing each edge of G exactly two non-consecutive times, one in each direction, or decides that no such tour exists. The main idea of this algorithm is based on the modification of a proof given by Thomassen related to a problem proposed by Ore in 1951.

Spatial data of Ixodes ricinus instar abundance and nymph pathogen prevalence, Scandinavia, 2016-2017.

ticks carry pathogens that can cause disease in both animals and humans, and there is a need to monitor the distribution and abundance of ticks and the pathogens they carry to pinpoint potential high risk areas for tick-borne disease transmission. In a joint Scandinavian study, we measured Ixodes ricinus instar abundance at 159 sites in southern Scandinavia in August-September, 2016, and collected 29,440 tick nymphs at 50 of these sites. We additionally measured abundance at 30 sites in August-September, 2017.
