Increasing offensive or defensive efficiency? An analysis of Italian and Spanish football☆

2009

This paper analyses technical efficiency of Italian and Spanish football during three recent seasons, to shed light on the sport performance of professional football clubs. To achieve this we have used mathematical optimisation methods, particularly DEA models, which enable the calculation of the frontiers of efficient production. Some of the most interesting results are the following. Firstly, the Spanish league is clearly more homogeneous and competitive than the Italian league. Secondly, to obtain a better classification in the Italian league, it is much more important to improve defensive, rather than offensive, efficiency. The popular maxim holds in Italy: the best attack begins with a…

Systemic Approaches for Business Innovation and Sustainability. Editorial Note to the Special Section for the 2nd BS Lab Symposium-Rome 2014

2014

Our times are characterized by intense transformations in the competitive logics of markets and, broadly speaking, of business systems. Business scenarios today are typified by dynamism, connectivity, nonlinearity, and emergent properties—i n other words by ‘complexity’ (Dominici,2012). The systemic approach has been pivotal to open new lenses and understandings of the inner dynamics of complex systems. In recent times, we have witnessed a paradigm shift in the managerial approach from the whole/part model to the systemice nvironmental approach. This shift generated the epistemological frame of the systemic approach to social sciences in the fields of sociology, management and economics (Pita…

Executives' role in digital transformation

2022

This conceptual paper revisits and updates the concept of top management support (TMS), which has been the long-established rationale for explaining the role of top managers in digitalization activities. In our view, the concept of TMS is grounded in technological determinism, accounts for attitudinal and behavioral aspects that appear to be little more than exhortation and accepts the occasional responsibility of top managers in technology management. We consider both the crucial role that top managers may play in the digitalization process and the fact that digital technologies have become pervasive in today’s organizations. Then, we develop a model by which top managers and digital techn…

On the Bullwhip Avoidance Phase: The Synchronised Supply Chain

2012

Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyse the operational response of a Synchronised Supply Chain (SSC). To do so, first a new mathematical model of a SSC is presented. An exhaustive Latin Square design of experiments is adopted in order to perform a boundary variation analysis of the main three parameters of the periodic review smoothing ( S ,  R ) order-up-to policy: i.e., lead time, demand smoothing forecasting factor, and proportional controller of the replenishment rule. The model is then evaluated under a variety of performance measures based on internal process benefits and customer benefits. The main results of the analysis are: (I) SSC responds to violent changes in demand by re…

An efficient method for clustered multi-metric learning

2019

Abstract Distance metric learning, which aims at finding a distance metric that separates examples of one class from examples of the other classes, is the key to the success of many machine learning tasks. Although there has been an increasing interest in this field, learning a global distance metric is insufficient to obtain satisfactory results when dealing with heterogeneously distributed data. A simple solution to tackle this kind of data is based on kernel embedding methods. However, it quickly becomes computationally intractable as the number of examples increases. In this paper, we propose an efficient method that learns multiple local distance metrics instead of a single global one.…

Adaptive memory programming for the dynamic bipartite drawing problem

2020

Abstract The bipartite drawing problem is a well-known NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem with numerous applications. The aim is to minimize the number of edge crossings in a two-layer graph, in which the edges are drawn as straight lines. We consider the dynamic variant of this problem, called the dynamic bipartite drawing problem (DBDP), which consists of adding (resp. or removing) vertices and edges to (resp. or from) a given bipartite drawing, thereby obtaining a new drawing with a layout similar to that of the original drawing. To solve this problem, we propose a tabu search method that incorporates adaptive memory to search the solution space efficiently. In this study, we com…

Domain-specific knowledge representation and inference engine for an intelligent tutoring system

2013

One of the most challenging steps in learning algebra is the translation of word problems into symbolic notation. This paper describes an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) that focuses on this stage of the problem solving process. On the one hand, a domain specific inference engine and a knowledge representation mechanism are proposed. These are based on a description language based on hypergraphs, and the idea of using conceptual schemes to represent the student's knowledge. As a result, the system is able to simultaneously: (a) represent all potential algebraic solutions to a given word problem; (b) keep track of the student's actions; (c) univocally determine the current state of the res…

Designing a Multi‐Sided Platform business model assessment framework: a Dynamic Performance Management perspective

2019

The purpose of this research is to offer an assessment framework to validate multisided platform business models. For this aim, we propose a systemic perspective based on the dynamic performance management approach. This approach is particularly effective to make explicit the net of relationships between internal and external strategic resources, the value creation and capture drivers, and the way such drivers influence platform performances. The developed multisided platform business model assessment framework has been tested by using a success and a failure case, respectively, Airbnb and Take Eat Easy. Research originality results from the combination of multisided platform value creation…

The visual query language CQL for transitive and relational computation

2000

Abstract Classification query language (CQL) is a high-level visual query language with a great expressive power. In CQL the processing of ordinary relations and classifications based on transitive relationships is integrated seamlessly. Relations and classifications are represented in the visual interface in a uniform way through relation and classification skeletons. All query formulation in CQL is QBE-like – based on the intuitive way of filling constants and sample values into the skeletons. In order to guarantee great expressive power, relational and classification expressions can be nested freely with each other at unlimited nesting levels. Recursive definition of transitive processin…

An Enhanced Fear Appeal Rhetorical Framework: Leveraging Threats to the Human Asset Through Sanctioning Rhetoric

2015

Fear appeals, which are used widely in information security campaigns, have become common tools in motivating individual compliance with information security policies and procedures. However, empirical assessments of the effectiveness of fear appeals have yielded mixed results, leading IS security scholars and practitioners to question the validity of the conventional fear appeal framework and the manner in which fear appeal behavioral modeling theories, such as protection motivation theory (PMT), have been applied to the study of information security phenomena. We contend that the conventional fear appeal rhetorical framework is inadequate when used in the context of information security t…
