Media and Information in Times of Crisis: The Case of the COVID-19 Infodemic

2021

Media play an important role in informing the public about issues on the political agenda, different opinions, and public statements, thereby establishing and bringing forth new spaces of information flow. One of the media’s main roles in democratic societies is to give publicity to central issues on the political and public agenda, especially in times of crisis. Nevertheless, studies have found that, in times of crisis, the public and the media tend to “rally ’round the flag,” leading to significant decreases in their criticality, alongside (almost) unreserved support for nation(al) or region(al) leaders. This paper aims to bridge the gap between both media and communication studies and ge…

Hidden entanglement, system-environment information flow and non-Markovianity

2014

It is known that entanglement dynamics of two noninteracting qubits, locally subjected to classical environments, may exhibit revivals. A simple explanation of this phenomenon may be provided by using the concept of hidden entanglement, which signals the presence of entanglement that may be recovered without the help of nonlocal operations. Here we discuss the link between hidden entanglement and the (non-Markovian) flow of classical information between the system and the environment.

A self-routing protocol for distributed consensus on logical information

2010

In this paper, we address decision making problems, depending on a set of input events, with networks of dynamic agents that have partial visibility of such events. Previous work by the authors proposed so-called logical consensus approach, by which a network of agents, that can exchange binary values representing their local estimates of the events, is able to reach a unique and consistent decision. The approach therein proposed is based on the construction of an iterative map, whose computation is centralized and guaranteed under suitable conditions on the input visibility and graph connectivity. Under the same conditions, we extend the approach in this work by allowing the construction o…

Information Streaming Systems: A Review

2018

Ubiquitous nature of information determines continuous decision making always based on its stream coming from the environment, not only in the human, but also in the animal world. Communication between the users of information system is a fundamental concept for acquiring, showing, spreading, sharing and constantly increasing the knowledge about the circumstances under which they are in need to make a move all alone as well as while working in groups. In this paper, we review information stream-based systems on amount of information acceptable to facilitate the process of decision making, also in multilingual settings. We analyze the information system objects and the resource management cy…

Measuring spectrally-resolved information transfer for sender- and receiver-specific frequencies

2020

AbstractInformation transfer, measured by transfer entropy, is a key component of distributed computation. It is therefore important to understand the pattern of information transfer in order to unravel the distributed computational algorithms of a system. Since in many natural systems distributed computation is thought to rely on rhythmic processes a frequency resolved measure of information transfer is highly desirable. Here, we present a novel algorithm, and its efficient implementation, to identify separately frequencies sending and receiving information in a network. Our approach relies on the invertible maximum overlap discrete wavelet transform (MODWT) for the creation of surrogate d…

Internationalization of firms: revitalizing the board of directors after a cross-border acquisition

2017

Purpose This paper aims to show the importance of introducing an integration manager (i.e. an executive position used to channel the acquiring firm’s course of action and strengthen the success of a post-acquisition integration process) within the acquiring firm’s board of directors. Design/methodology/approach This is a theoretical paper that introduces the integration manager within the board of privately held firms going internationally via acquisitions and serving as an “out-insider” director able to balance the conflicting demands of the previously separated entities during their integration process. The authors present an explanatory case study that empirically contributes to the boa…

Entry Barriers of Small and Medium-sized Software Firms in the Japanese Market

2007

The Japanese software market size was 131,773 million U.S. dollars in 2004. Due to limited domestic software production, Japan is highly dependent on imported software products. Despite the market potential for foreign software firms in Japan, almost no research exists on what kind of challenges foreign software firms encounter when they are entering the market. To fill this gap, this paper investigates the entry barriers of small and medium-sized software firms in the Japanese market by using a multi case-study. The findings suggest that most of the barriers are firm-specific and mainly related to firms’ resources and capabilities to operate in the market. The entry barriers encountered al…

Towards a Simulator of Integrated Long-Term Care Systems for Elderly People

2014

In this paper, we propose a simulator for integrated long-term care systems using as a starting point a holistic model of care systems for people that need long term care, the Sustainable Socio-Health Model (SSHM). The implementation of the simulator on the Jason multi-agent platform allows the tool to include the human interactions, preferences, and social abilities that take place between elderly people and the staff of healthcare systems (doctors, social workers and nurses). In addition, the use of this multi-agent platform provides the required scalability for simulating population sizes of different orders of magnitude. The paper shows the model to be implemented in the simulator, the…
