Use of waggle dance information in honey bees is linked to gene expression in the antennae, but not in the brain.

2021

AbstractCommunication is essential for social animals, but deciding how to utilize information provided by conspecifics is a complex process that depends on environmental and intrinsic factors. Honey bees use a unique form of communication, the waggle dance, to inform nestmates about the location of food sources. However, as in many other animals, experienced individuals often ignore this social information and prefer to rely on prior experiences, i.e. private information. The neurosensory factors that drive the decision to use social information are not yet understood. Here we test whether the decision to use social dance information or private information is linked to gene expression diff…

Children’s improved performance with age in analogy tasks has been explained by an increase in semantic knowledge of the items and the relations between them or by the development of an increased ability to inhibit irrelevant information. We tested the so-called "unbalanced attentional focus hypothesis" that claims that a failure to choose the "analogical" match can be the result of a difficulty to focus on all the relevant information available. Previous eye-tracking research has suggested, in analogies of the A:B::C:D format, that 5-6 year-olds organize their search around the C item. They focused significantly less than adults on the A:B pair, thereby hindering their discovering the rela…

THE CAUSAL ROOTS OF INTEGRATION AND THE UNITY OF CONSCIOUSNESS

2016

A fundamental feature of consciousness is unity. The problem is whether unity is compatible both with the physical underpinnings of conscious experience and with the fabric of the physical world in general.

Information Integration Platform for Patient-Centric Healthcare Services: Design, Prototype and Dependability Aspects

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Future Internet. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/fi6010126 Open Access Technology innovations have pushed today’s healthcare sector to an unprecedented new level. Various portable and wearable medical and fitness devices are being sold in the consumer market to provide the self-empowerment of a healthier lifestyle to society. Many vendors provide additional cloud-based services for devices they manufacture, enabling the users to visualize, store and share the gathered information through the Internet. However, most of these services are integrated with the devices in a closed “silo” manner, where the devices can…

Fusion of experimental data

1997

Abstract The integration of information from various sensory systems is one of the most difficult challenges in understanding both perception and cognition. For example, the problem of auditory-visual integration is a correspondence problem between perceived auditory and visual scenes. Two main questions arise when designing data analysis systems: what is the useful information to be integrated?, and what are the integration rules? The problem of integrating information becomes relevant whenever: (a) the same kind of data are detected by spatially distributed sensors; (b) heterogeneous data are detected by different sensors; (c) heterogeneous distributed data are involved. General problems …

A dynamic integration algorithm for an ensemble of classifiers

1999

Numerous data mining methods have recently been developed, and there is often a need to select the most appropriate data mining method or methods. The method selection can be done statically or dynamically. Dynamic selection takes into account characteristics of a new instance and usually results in higher classification accuracy. We discuss a dynamic integration algorithm for an ensemble of classifiers. Our algorithm is a new variation of the stacked generalization method and is based on the basic assumption that each basic classifier is best inside certain subareas of the application domain. The algorithm includes two main phases: a learning phase, which collects information about the qua…

The dependency of the validity of information integration on cognitive variables and the judgement task

1980

Simple models of information integration focus essentially on the combination of the components of information. This research investigated whether cognitive variables in the constructs of intelligence and cognitive complexity, as well as concentration, could predict the conditions of simple models of judgement. As additional predictors, the two qualitative variables [type of information] and [experience of the judgement task] were introduced. Subjects judged three types of stimuli using the pair comparison method. The conditions of the judgement models were analysed in the framework of the conjoint-measurement approach. Five different regression functions provided mediocre approximations to…

Surgery of the Cranio-Vertebral Junction: Image Guidance, Navigation, and Augmented Reality

2019

Due to the density of essential, small, and mobile structures, mastering the surgical anatomy of the craniovertebral junction may be extremely challenging. Quality and safety of interventions can be improved using navigation. Currently, patient-specific anatomy preparation, surgical planning, intervention, and quality assessment are disconnected actions performed in different conditions and environments and by multiple team members. The whole process needs to be integrated by surgeons performing the intervention. The complexity of the process exposes to errors and degraded precision. It is therefore relevant to develop tools that reduce the need to extrapolate and simplify the information i…

Panel Summary: Behavioural Models

1997

The aim of this paper is to report the panel discussion on behavioural models of human or machine agents interacting with the environment. In particular the following hot points will been analysed: a framework for describing behaviour; learning and evolution; closure and teleonomy when it comes to behaviour; the perception-learning-planning loop; the information integration at the (pre)attentive level; knowing by acting and knowing by computing.

Decision Committee Learning with Dynamic Integration of Classifiers

2000

Decision committee learning has demonstrated spectacular success in reducing classification error from learned classifiers. These techniques develop a classifier in the form of a committee of subsidiary classifiers. The combination of outputs is usually performed by majority vote. Voting, however, has a shortcoming. It is unable to take into account local expertise. When a new instance is difficult to classify, then the average classifier will give a wrong prediction, and the majority vote will more probably result in a wrong prediction. Instead of voting, dynamic integration of classifiers can be used, which is based on the assumption that each committee member is best inside certain subar…
