Factors affecting perceptions of CASE effectiveness

1995

CASE (Computer Aided Software/Systems Engineering) tools are claimed to increase the productivity of systems development and the quality of developed systems. Existing empirical research on CASE effectiveness is entirely based on subjective, perceptual data. In order to interpret the existing evidence, it is useful to understand factors affecting these perceptions. This paper studies the impact of demographic variables such as education and experience, CASE adoption process variables such as training and participation, and CASE product variables such as perceived trialability, perceived complexity, perceived demonstrability and perceived compatibility on CASE effectiveness perceptions such …

Pre-determinants of Implementing IT Benefits Management in Norwegian Municipalities: Cultivate the Context

2008

The concept of benefits management addresses explicated practices to realize benefits from information technology investments. However, a minority of organizations have implemented those. We explored which pre-determinants affect the implementation of benefits management practices by conducting a Delphi process in the Norwegian municipality sector. The experts represented governmental organs, general management, and municipal service managers. They identified 59 pre-determinants of potential importance. However, the experts reached no significant consensus on the relative importance of the pre-determinants. Instead, we suggest that the identified pre-determinants should be holistically and …

Constructing Interdependencies with Collaborative Information Technology

2000

Interdependence construction is the gradual formation of mutual relationships between people. In this study, the area is narrowed to interdependencies at work, in long term projects or groups. Viewing interdependence relationships dynamically, as social practices, it is possible to appreciate the complex and situated nature of this formation. The main goal of the study is to develop a theoretical account of the dynamics of the intertwined processes of interdependence construction and collaborative technology appropriation and use. The main dimensions of this account are: (1) how interdependence is constructed and established as a social process, (2) how information and communication are inv…

Why Do Teachers Use Game-Based Learning Technologies? The Role of Individual and Institutional ICT Readiness

2015

This paper investigates how different individual and institutional factors pertaining to ICT readiness influence teachers’ adoption of game-based learning technologies. The data were gathered from Finnish primary, lower secondary and upper secondary school teachers (N=1668) with an online survey. The results indicate that openness towards ICT, ICT attitude and the ICT compatibility with teaching positively influence the perceived value whereas openness towards ICT, supportive organizational ICT culture, ICT selfefficacy and ICT compatibility with teaching positively influenced the actual use of game-based learning technologies. However, the structural model could explain only little of the …

Mobile Communication and Work Practices in Knowledge-based Organizations

2005

This paper examines the role of mobile communication, mobile tools and work practices in the context of organizations, especially knowledge-based organizations. Today, organizations are highly complex and diverse. Not surprisingly, various solutions to incorporating mobile tools and mobile communication in organizations have been devised. Challenges to technological development and research on mobile communication are presented.

Exploring health information technology implementation success factors: a comparative investigation in Nordic countries

2016

The implementation of health information technology (HIT) can improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare services. There is a gap in terms of generalising and systematising the results of previous research and in understanding HIT implementation worldwide. The majority of studies on HIT implementation have been conducted in North America, most of which are case studies or other qualitative research. In this research, we surveyed IT managers in Nordic healthcare and used factor analysis to uncover success factor groups. Six groups emerged: culture conducive to change, quality of system and service, collaboration, alignment, end-user involvement, and management commitment. We found that…

A nested virtualization tool for information technology practical education

2016

Background A common problem of some information technology courses is the difficulty of providing practical exercises. Although different approaches have been followed to solve this problem, it is still an open issue, specially in security and computer network courses. Results This paper proposes NETinVM, a tool based on nested virtualization that includes a fully functional lab, comprising several computers and networks, in a single virtual machine. It also analyzes and evaluates how it has been used in different teaching environments. Conclusions The results show that this tool makes it possible to perform demos, labs and practical exercises, greatly appreciated by the students, that woul…

Towards new cultures of learning: Personal learning environments as a developmental perspective for improving higher education language courses

2015

AbstractThis article provides readers with an understanding of the concept of the personal learning environment (PLE). It suggests that PLEs can be used in two complementary ways: as a developmental lens for integrating ICT and creating new pedagogical practices and digital literacies for academic language learning, and as a context in which learners can practise and develop core skills such as digital literacies, team and knowledge work, and interactional skills – skills that are needed for success in today’s knowledge economy. The article places PLEs within the broader development related to the cultural changes brought on by the proliferation of Web 2.0 technologies – participation, team…

Positive Technologies for Understanding and Promoting Positive Emotions

2017

AbstractInformation and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have become increasingly present in our lives, and their use has spread considerably. This paper presents a review of the way ICTs can help practitioners and researchers to study, promote, and train positive emotions. It is framed within the field of Positive Technologies: the applied scientific approach to the study of the use of technology to improve the quality of personal experience, with the goal of increasing wellbeing. First, the article presents an introduction to the topic of technologies and positive emotions. Then, it describes how ICTs can aid in monitoring, assessing, promoting, modifying, and training positive emotions.…

Paradigm shift in engineering education More time is needed

2010

Abstract Information Technology (IT) becomes: innovation motor, engineering toolbox; basic part of curricula. The impact on engineering education is due to shifting from industrial towards post-industrial engineering. IT is the most suitable domain to bear the paradigmatic shifts able to lessen the paradox of temporal dissociation between the present process of teaching and its future mirroring in life-long learning. Hence, a modern approach to time and to its related concepts is focused upon. The essence of applying new paradigms in education is exemplified via the advanced subdomain of artificial intelligence. Conclusion: carrying out such educational innovations is urgent, painless and a…
