Determination of molecular species of oil triacylglycerols by reversed-phase and chiral-phase high-performance liquid chromatography

A method is described for the determination of molecular species of oil triacylglycerols. The method is based on the analytical separation of the enantiomericsn-1,2-andsn-2,3-diacylglycerols, derived from triacylglycerols, by high-performance liquid-chromatography (HPLC) on a chiral column containing N-(R)-1-(α-naphthyl)ethylaminocarbonyl-(S)-valinecarbonyl-(S)-valine as stationary phase. A new species ofHalocnemumM.Bieb. (Amaranthaceae) from southern Turkey

Halocnemum yurdakulolii Yaprak is described as the second species of the previously monotypic genus Halocnemum. The species is endemic to the Goksu Delta in southern Turkey. The main morphological characteristics that separate H. yurdakulolii from H. strobilaceum (Pall.) M.Bieb. are growth form and spike morphology. First‐Derivative Fourier‐Transform Infrared Determination of Oxadiazon in Commercial Herbicide Formulations

Abstract A Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) method has been developed for the quantification of oxadiazon in herbicide formulations. The method involves the extraction of the active ingredient by sonication of the samples with CHCl3 and direct measurement of the peak area values in first‐order derivate spectra from 1770 cm−1 to 1774 cm−1 corrected with a baseline point located at 1950 cm−1 and after a 5‐point smoothing. A limit of detection (3 s) of 0.03 mg g−1 and a typical relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.3% were found. Este trabalho teve por objetivo desenvolver um método analítico direto e rápido para a determinação de ácido oleico em óleo de soja por eletroforese capilar com detecção condutométrica sem contato. O eletrólito de corrida empregado foi uma mistura metanol/1-propanol (1:6 v/v) contendo 4 × 10-2 mol L-1 de KOH e 10% (v/v) em etileno glicol. As amostras foram preparadas pela solubilização de 50 g L-1 de óleo de soja e 1,33 × 10-3 de ácido salicílico (padrão interno) no eletrólito de corrida. Taenia asiatica: the Most Neglected Human Taenia and the Possibility of Cysticercosis

Not only Taenia solium and Taenia saginata, but also Taenia asiatica infects humans. The last species is not included in the evaluation of the specificity of the immunodiagnostic techniques for taeniasis/cysticercosis. There is currently no specific immunodiagnostic method for T. asiatica available. Therefore, due to the fact that molecular techniques (the only tool to distinguish the 3 Taenia species) are normally not employed in routine diagnostic methods, the 2 questions concerning T. asiatica (its definite geographic distribution and its ability to cause human cysticercosis), remain open, turning T. asiatica into the most neglected agent of human taeniasis-cysticercosis.

Water vapor sensors based on the swelling of relief gelatin gratings

We report on a novel device to measure relative humidity. The sensor is based on surface diffraction gratings made of gelatin. This material swells and shrinks according to the content of water vapor in air. By sending a light beam to the grating, diffracted orders appear. Due to the gelatin swelling or shrinking, first order intensity changes according to the relative humidity. Calibration curves relating intensity versus relative humidity have been found. The fabrication process of diffraction gratings and the testing of the prototype sensing devices are described.

Mobilization of proline in the starchy endosperm of germinating barley grain.

In germinating grains of barley, Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Himalaya, free proline accumulated in the starchy endosperm during the period of rapid mobilization of reserve proteins. When starchy endosperms were separated from germinating grains and homogenized in a dilute buffer of pH 5 (the pH of the starchy endosperm), the liberation of proline continued in these suspensions. The process was completely inhibited by diisopropylfluorophosphate, indicating that it was totally dependent on serine carboxy-peptidases.
