Yliopistojen strategisen kansainvälistymisen myötä englannin asema lingua francana kaikilla akateemisen työn osa-alueilla (tutkimus, opettaminen, palvelut ja hallinto) ja tieteenaloilla on voimistunut. Toisaalta myös monikielisyys on perinteisesti ollut hallitseva ideologia akateemisissa piireissä, sillä useiden kielten osaamista pidetään mm. yhtenä sivistyksen mittarina.  Future workplaces require collaboration skills in which members of different work communities use technologies to solve complex problems. Vocational education and training (VET) programs need to meet the challenge to prepare students to be part of a competent workforce.
