Genetic basis of trichome production in Arabidopsis lyrata.

2002

Leaf trichomes may protect plants against herbivorous insects, and may increase tolerance to drought and UV-radiation. The perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata (Brassicaceae) is polymorphic for trichome production and occurs in a glabrous and trichome-producing form. In addition, there is quantitative variation in trichome density among trichome-producing plants. To examine the genetic basis of glabrousness, we conducted controlled crosses with plants originating from two natural populations in Sweden (one polymorphic for trichome-production, and one consisting of glabrous plants only). In addition, we estimated the heritability of trichome number from parent-offspring regressions for plants o…

IQSEC2-related encephalopathy in males and females: a comparative study including 37 novel patients.

2019

Variants in IQSEC2, escaping X inactivation, cause X-linked intellectual disability with frequent epilepsy in males and females. We aimed to investigate sex-specific differences.

Polymorphisms in genes involved in T-cell co-stimulation are associated with blood pressure in women.

2019

In recent years, conclusive data have emerged on a relationship between immune system, especially the T-cell, and blood pressure (BP). The objective of the present study was to determine the association between BP and four polymorphisms in CD80, CD86, CD28 and CTLA4 genes that code for key proteins in the T-cell co-stimulation process, in a female cohort. To that end, an association study in a cohort of 934 women over 40 years old from two hospitals was done. Raw data showed a significant association between the SNP rs1129055 of CD86 gene and BP. Analyzing this association against inheritance patterns, higher SBP (p  0.000) and DBP (p = 0.005) values were observed in AA than in GG/GA genoty…

Violence and the Peasant Elite in Lower Satakunta (1550–1680)

2016

“The lengthy quarrels over inheritance hint that these people had fiery tempers”, wrote Mauno Jokipii in his pioneering article on the history of the Lavila family—one of the prominent families of freeholders in Lower Satakunta.1 In our study on the women from that same family, Virpi Nissila and I have encountered about 100 court cases from the 1620 to the 1650s, in which six women from two generations have been present. The most prominent of them is Anna Martensdotter who appeared in court 28 times in the four years for which we have the court minutes still intact. These records tell of her offensive behaviour: neighbours complaining about her physical violence, insults, appropriations, an…

Reverse inheritance in statically typed object-oriented programming languages

2010

Reverse inheritance is a new class reuse mechanism, an experimental implementation of which we have built for Eiffel. It enables a more natural design approach, factorization of common features (members), insertion of classes into an existing hierarchy etc. Due to its reuse potential in Eiffel we consider exploring its capabilities in other industrial-strength programming languages like C++, Java and C#.

Genome-wide association studies identify 137 genetic loci for DNA methylation biomarkers of aging

2021

Abstract Background Biological aging estimators derived from DNA methylation data are heritable and correlate with morbidity and mortality. Consequently, identification of genetic and environmental contributors to the variation in these measures in populations has become a major goal in the field. Results Leveraging DNA methylation and SNP data from more than 40,000 individuals, we identify 137 genome-wide significant loci, of which 113 are novel, from genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analyses of four epigenetic clocks and epigenetic surrogate markers for granulocyte proportions and plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 levels, respectively. We find evidence for shared genetic loci ass…

Evolutionary constraints of warning signals: A genetic trade-off between the efficacy of larval and adult warning coloration can maintain variation i…

2016

To predict evolutionary responses of warning signals under selection, we need to determine the inheritance pattern of the signals, and how they are genetically correlated with other traits contributing to fitness. Furthermore, protective coloration often undergoes remarkable changes within an individual's lifecycle, requiring us to quantify the genetic constraints of adaptive coloration across all the relevant life stages. Based on a 12 generation pedigree with > 11,000 individuals of the wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis), we show that high primary defense as a larva (large warning signal) results in weaker defenses as adult (less efficient warning color), due to the negative genetic cor…

On the genetics of the pi serum proteins.

1970

The authors report family studies (51 families with 134 children) on the inheritance of the Pi phenotypes. Combining these data with a Norwegian family material (77 families with 323 children) published by Fagerhol and Gedde-Dahl (1969) a total of 128 families with 457 children is now available, which allows the following conclusion: The Pi phenotypes are inherited by a simple codominant mode of heredity and they are determined by a set of (at least nine) alleles. As up to now no exception to the role of inheritance has been observed, the application of the Pi system in cases of disputed paternity seems to be discussible. Some methodological problems in connection with this are shown.

Bacillus thuringiensis Vip3Aa Toxin Resistance in Heliothis virescens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

2017

ABSTRACT Laboratory selection with Vip3Aa of a field-derived population of Heliothis virescens produced >2,040-fold resistance in 12 generations of selection. The Vip3Aa-selected (Vip-Sel)-resistant population showed little cross-resistance to Cry1Ab and no cross-resistance to Cry1Ac. Resistance was unstable after 15 generations without exposure to the toxin. F 1 reciprocal crosses between Vip3Aa-unselected (Vip-Unsel) and Vip-Sel insects indicated a strong paternal influence on the inheritance of resistance. Resistance ranged from almost completely recessive (mean degree of dominance [ h ] = 0.04 if the resistant parent was female) to incompletely dominant (mean h = 0.53 if the resistan…
