A New Linear Initialization in SOM for Biomolecular Data

2009

In the past decade, the amount of data in biological field has become larger and larger; Bio-techniques for analysis of biological data have been developed and new tools have been introduced. Several computational methods are based on unsupervised neural network algorithms that are widely used for multiple purposes including clustering and visualization, i.e. the Self Organizing Maps (SOM). Unfortunately, even though this method is unsupervised, the performances in terms of quality of result and learning speed are strongly dependent from the neuron weights initialization. In this paper we present a new initialization technique based on a totally connected undirected graph, that report relat…

A New SOM Initialization Algorithm for Nonvectorial Data

2008

Self Organizing Maps (SOMs) are widely used mapping and clustering algorithms family. It is also well known that the performances of the maps in terms of quality of result and learning speed are strongly dependent from the neuron weights initialization. This drawback is common to all the SOM algorithms, and critical for a new SOM algorithm, the Median SOM (M-SOM), developed in order to map datasets characterized by a dissimilarity matrix. In this paper an initialization technique of M-SOM is proposed and compared to the initialization techniques proposed in the original paper. The results show that the proposed initialization technique assures faster learning and better performance in terms…

Robust refinement of initial prototypes for partitioning-based clustering algorithms

2007

Non-uniqueness of solutions and sensitivity to erroneous data are common problems to large-scale data clustering tasks. In order to avoid poor quality of solutions with partitioning-based clustering methods, robust estimates (that are highly insensitive to erroneous data values) are needed and initial cluster prototypes should be determined properly. In this paper, a robust density estimation initialization method that exploits the spatial median estimate to the prototype update is presented. Besides being insensitive to noise and outliers, the new method is also computationally comparable with other traditional methods. The methods are compared by numerical experiments on a set of syntheti…

A Data Association Algorithm for People Re-Identification in Photo Sequences

2010

In this paper, a new system is presented to support the user in the face annotation task. Every time a photo sequence becomes available, the system analyses it to detect and cluster faces in set corresponding to the same person. We propose to model the problem of people re-identification in photos as a data association problem. In this way, the system takes advantage from the assumption that each person can appear at most once in each photo. We propose a fully automated method for grouping facial images, the method does not require any initialization neither a priori knowledge of the number of persons that are in the photo sequence. We compare the results obtained with our method and with s…

Using Statistical and Computer Models to Quantify Volcanic Hazards

2009

Risk assessment of rare natural hazards, such as large volcanic block and ash or pyroclastic flows, is addressed. Assessment is approached through a combination of computer modeling, statistical modeling, and extreme-event probability computation. A computer model of the natural hazard is used to provide the needed extrapolation to unseen parts of the hazard space. Statistical modeling of the available data is needed to determine the initializing distribution for exercising the computer model. In dealing with rare events, direct simulations involving the computer model are prohibitively expensive. The solution instead requires a combination of adaptive design of computer model approximation…

A novel active contour model for unsupervised low-key image segmentation

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Central European Journal of Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.2478/s13531-012-0050-0 Unsupervised image segmentation is greatly useful in many vision-based applications. In this paper, we aim at the unsupervised low-key image segmentation. In low-key images, dark tone dominates the background, and gray level distribution of the foreground is heterogeneous. They widely exist in the areas of space exploration, machine vision, medical imaging, etc. In our algorithm, a novel active contour model with the probability density function of gamma distribution is proposed. The flexible gamma distribution gives a bet…

Augmented Reality of the Middle Ear Combining Otoendoscopy and Temporal Bone Computed Tomography

2018

International audience; HYPOTHESIS:Augmented reality (AR) may enhance otologic procedures by providing sub-millimetric accuracy and allowing the unification of information in a single screen.BACKGROUND:Several issues related to otologic procedures can be addressed through an AR system by providing sub-millimetric precision, supplying a global view of the middle ear cleft, and advantageously unifying the information in a single screen. The AR system is obtained by combining otoendoscopy with temporal bone computer tomography (CT).METHODS:Four human temporal bone specimens were explored by high-resolution CT-scan and dynamic otoendoscopy with video recordings. The initialization of the system…

An atlas- and data-driven approach to initializing reaction-diffusion systems in computer cardiac electrophysiology

2016

The cardiac electrophysiology (EP) problem is governed by a nonlinear anisotropic reaction-diffusion system with a very rapidly varying reaction term associated with the transmembrane cell current. The nonlinearity associated with the cell models requires a stabilization process before any simulation is performed. More importantly, when used in a 3-dimensional (3D) anatomy, it is not sufficient to perform this stabilization on the basis of isolated cells only, since the coupling of the different cells through the tissue greatly modulates the dynamics of the system. Therefore, stabilization of the system must be performed on the entire 3D model. This work develops a novel procedure for the i…

Multiple Mean Models of Statistical Shape and Probability Priors for Automatic Prostate Segmentation

2011

International audience; Low contrast of the prostate gland, heterogeneous intensity distribution inside the prostate region, imaging artifacts like shadow regions, speckle and significant variations in prostate shape, size and in- ter dataset contrast in Trans Rectal Ultrasound (TRUS) images challenge computer aided automatic or semi-automatic segmentation of the prostate. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic framework for automatic initialization and propagation of multiple mean parametric models derived from principal component analysis of shape and posterior probability information of the prostate region to segment the prostate. Unlike traditional statistical models of shape and int…

Deep Learning for Resource-Limited Devices

2020

In recent years, deep neural networks have revolutionized the development of intelligent systems and applications in many areas. Despite their numerous advantages and potentials, these intelligent models still suffer from several issues. Among them, the fact that they became very complex with millions of parameters. That is, requiring more resources and time, and being unsuitable for small restricted devices. To contribute in this direction, this paper presents (1) some state-of-the-art lightweight architectures that were specifically designed for small-sized devices, and (2) some recent solutions that have been proposed to optimize/compress classical deep neural networks to allow their dep…
