The use of opioids in the last week of life in an acute palliative care unit.
2010
The aim of this survey was to assess the opioid use in the last week of life of cancer patients admitted at an acute palliative care unit. From a consecutive sample of patients surveyed for a period of one year, patients who died in the unit were selected. Type of opioid, route of administration, and doses were recorded one week before death (or at admission time if the interval admission-death was less than one week) (-7), and on the day of death (Tend). Seventy-seven patients died in the unit in the period taken into consideration (12.4%). Oral morphine equivalents were 170 mg/day and 262 mg/day at -7 and Tend, respectively. Patients were receiving transdermal drugs or intravenous morphi…
Regulation of noradrenergic coerulean neuronal firing mediated by 5-HT2 receptors: involvement of the prepositus hypoglossal nucleus.
1991
Abstract Previous studies have indicated a 5-HT2-mediated inhibitory influence on unit activity in the locus coeruleus. In the present work, attempts were made to determine which area(s) of the brain is (are) involved in this effect: (1) Microiontophoretic application of serotoninergic compounds (quipazine, ketanserin, RU 24969 (Roussel Uclaf), 8-hydroxy-2(di-n-propylamino) tetralin (8-OH-DPAT), metergoline, serotonin) in the locus coeruleus, did not alter the coerulean discharge. Local microinjection of quipazine or ketanserin in the area of the locus coeruleus, as well as in one of its major afferents, the prepositus hypoglossi, had no effect on the unit activity in the locus coeruleus. 1…
Sperm DNA fragmentation levels in testicular sperm samples from azoospermic males as assessed by the sperm chromatin dispersion (SCD) test.
2009
Objective To analyze sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) in testicular sperm samples from patients with azoospermia either from spermatogenic failure or from duct obstruction. Several technologies can be applied in the evaluation of SDF, but given the ease and low costs, the sperm chromatin dispersion test (SCD) has emerged as a promising standard. Design Prospective blind observational cohort study. Setting University-affiliated private IVF setting. Patient(s) Azoospermic patients from couples undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection cycles. Intervention(s) Testicular sperm extraction (TESE). Main Outcome Measurement(s) We determined testicular SDF, and a basic comparison between nonobstructi…
Stimulation of Serotonin-N-Acetyltransferase Activity in the Pineal Gland of the Mongolian Gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) by Intracerebroventricular …
1989
There is ever-increasing evidence that intrapineal peptides have an important role in the modulation of pineal melatonin synthesis. In the pineal gland of the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus), we have previously shown the presence of VIP-immunoreactive nerve fibers as well as pinealocytic VIP receptors. To assess the functional significance of these findings, 10 microliters of a 1 microM or 1 nM solution of VIP were injected into the lateral ventricle of gerbils over a period of 10 min. Animals were killed 1.5 hr after injection, and the superficial pineal glands were excised and assayed for N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity. Injection of the 1 microM VIP solution stimulated the NA…
Interleukin-1 inhibits drinking behaviour through prostaglandins, but not by nitric oxide formation
1997
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) causes inhibition of drinking behaviour. Moreover it induces formation of prostaglandins (PGs) and nitric oxide (NO). Both PGs and NO are able to inhibit drinking stimulated by water deprivation or by intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of angiotensin II. In this study, we studied in the preoptic area (POA) the possible role of PGs and NO in the antidipsogenic action induced by IL-1 beta. IL-1 beta was injected in the lateral cerebral ventricle (i.c.v.) (2.5, 10, 20, and 40 ng/rat) or into POA (0.625, 1.25, 2.5, and 10 ng/rat). L-arginine (12.5, 25, 50, and 100 ng/rat), the precursor of NO, or NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (25, 50, and …
The role of arginine-vasopressin for pineal melatonin synthesis in the rat: involvement of vasopressinergic receptors.
1991
Abstract The endogenously synthesized nonapeptide arginine vasopressin (AVP) is thought to be involved in transduction of photic information to the pineal gland. The enhancement of circulating AVP leads to a suppression of the nocturnal melatonin surge the mechanisms of which are unknown so far. We therefore studied the effect of dDAVP, an AVP analog with antidiuretic but without vasopressor activity, on pineal melatonin synthesis in Sprague-Dawley and AVP-deficient Brattleboro rats. The nocturnal intra-arterial application of dDAVP mimicked the inhibitory effect of AVP on the activity of the rate-limiting enzyme for pineal melatonin synthesis, N-acetyltransferase (NAT), in both rat strains…
Effects of immunomodulatory treatment with subcutaneous interferon beta-1a on cognitive decline in mildly disabled patients with relapsing-remitting …
2010
The objective of this study was to assess the effects of subcutaneous (sc) interferon beta-1a (IFNβ-1a) on cognition in mildly disabled patients with relapsing—remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Patients aged 18—50 years with RRMS (McDonald criteria; Expanded Disability Status Scale score ≤4.0) were assigned IFNβ therapy at the physician’s discretion and underwent standardized magnetic resonance imaging, neurological examination and neuropsychological testing at the baseline and regular intervals for up to three years. This analysis included 459 patients who received sc IFNβ-1a (44 mcg: n = 236; 22 mcg: n = 223; three-year follow up was available for 318 patients). The hazard ratio for c…
Potential Use of a Diluted High-relaxivity Gadolinium-based Intra-articular Contrast Agent for Magnetic Resonance Arthrography: An In-vitro Study
2019
Abstract Background Magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) requires intra-articular injection of gadolinium-based diluted paramagnetic contrast material. To our knowledge, gadobenate dimeglumine (Gd-BOPTA) has never been used for intra-articular applications. Our aim was to test in vitro different concentrations of Gd-BOPTA to be potentially used to perform MRA. Methods Gd-BOPTA was diluted in saline (NaCl 0.9%) to achieve different concentrations (4 mmol/l; 2 mmol/l; 1 mmol/l; 0.67 mmol/l; 0.5 mmol/l). Six sets of five sterile pipes were prepared with 5 ml of each solution, five sets added with 0.5 ml of fresh synovial fluid. Two separate pipes were prepared with 5 ml of gadopentetate dimeg…
Cannabidiol prevents several of the behavioral alterations related to cocaine addiction in mice.
2021
Abstract Cocaine dependence is a highly prevalent disease in modern society and lacks an effective treatment. Cannabidiol (CBD), a major non-psychoactive constituent of Cannabis sativa, has been shown to be a promising tool in the management of some neuropsychiatric disorders, including cocaine abuse. However, its therapeutic effects on the behavioral outcomes related to cocaine addiction remain unclear. The present research evaluates the effects of CBD (30, 60 and 120 mg/kg; injected intraperitoneally) on the acquisition, expression, extinction and reinstatement of cocaine (10 mg/kg)-induced conditioned place preference (CPP; Study 1); cocaine (25 mg/kg)-induced locomotor stimulation (Stud…
