Multi-longitudinal mode emission in a bidirectional laser model

2011

Multi-longitudinal mode emission is a fundamental issue in laser physics. Interestingly enough, the mechanisms responsible for the transition from single- to multi-longitudinal mode emission have not been completely clarified yet. For example, it is well known that in unidirectional ring lasers the Rabi splitting of the lasing transition can lead to multimode emission even in a homogeneously broadened medium, the so called Risken-Nummedal—Graham-Haken instability (RNGHI) [1]. In spite of being known since the late sixties, only in the recent years a couple of experiments have demonstrated “dressed” versions of the RNGHI [2], i.e., up to day there are not clear demonstrations of this basic m…

Cavity solitons in lasers with spatially modulated injected signal

2009

The injection of a monochromatic signal into a laser is a well-known technique for locking the laser phase to that of the injection. Some years ago another type of injection, called rocking [1,2], was introduced to render the laser phase-locking bistable. Rocking consists of the modulation of the amplitude injection so that its sign changes periodically, or even randomly [3], in time. Here we present an alternative to rocking that leads to the same type of behaviour, namely the appearance of bistable phase locking and, in the case of large Fresnel number lasers, to stable (phase bistable) cavity solitons and extended patterns. The new type of injection we present here is monochromatic, unli…

Comprehensive Theoretical and Experimental Study of Short- and Long-Term Stability in a Passively Mode-Locked Solitonic Fiber Laser

2015

We demonstrate the short- and long-term stable operation of an all-polarization-maintained Fabry–Perot cavity passively mode-locked fiber laser. The laser operates in an all-anomalous-dispersion solitonic regime. Laser stability is studied by a variety of measurements, which confirm the high stability of the laser in the temporal and spectral–both optical and electrical-domains. Pulse durations of 540 fs, period-relative time jitters of $\sim$ 0.015‰, and long-term uninterrumped operation with 0.4% variation (standard deviation) in the average output power are obtained. The highly stable operation of the laser oscillator was maintained after amplifying the laser output with a conventional E…

Long-term simulations of extragalactic jets: cavities and feedback

2010

AbstractWe present long-term numerical simulations of powerful extragalactic relativistic jets in two dimensions. The jets are injected in a realistic atmosphere with powers 1044, 1045 and 1046 erg/s, during tens of Myrs. After this time, the jet injection is switched off. We follow the evolution of the jets and associated shocks from 1 kpc to hundreds of kiloparsecs during more than 100 Myrs. The 1045 erg/s jet was simulated with leptonic and baryonic composition. Our results show that, for powerful jets, the main heating mechanisms are the driving shock-wave and mixing. We discuss the implications that these results have in the frame of cooling flows in clusters.

Manipulating dissipative soliton ensembles in passively mode-locked fiber lasers

2014

International audience; We review our recent experimental and theoretical results addressing the dynamics of large numbers of solitons interacting in presence of a background in passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber lasers. We first characterize experimentally the soliton rain complex dynamics, and then we focus on ordered soliton patterns. We report that, for suitable experimental parameters, a continuous wave can impose harmonic mode locking. Two levels of modeling for a mode-locked laser subjected to the external injection of a continuous wave are developed to support the latter observation. The first one is based on a scalar master equation, while the second one takes into account th…

Neutralization of interleukin-18 reduces severity in murine colitis and intestinal IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha production.

2001

Interleukin (IL)-18, initially described as interferon (IFN)-gamma-inducing factor, is expressed in the inflamed mucosa of patients with Crohn's disease. To investigate the role of IL-18 in intestinal inflammation, the effect of neutralizing antimurine IL-18 antiserum in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice was examined. During a dose response of DSS, levels of colonic IL-18 increased parallel with clinical worsening. With the use of confocal laser microscopy, the increased IL-18 was localized to the intestinal epithelial layer. Anti-IL-18 treatment resulted in a dose-dependent reduction of the severity of colitis in both BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice. Colon sho…

Safety and efficacy of novel dermal and epidermal microneedle delivery systems for rabies vaccination in healthy adults.

2010

International audience; In the present pilot study, intradermal ID delivery systems with a BD microneedle from 1 to 3mm in length, and epidermal delivery (BD skin abrader) through abraded skin surface relative to standard intramuscular injection were evaluated. Circulating neutralizing antibodies were measured against the rabies virus after the Vero cells rabies vaccine was administered at D0, D7, D21 and D49. This clinical evaluation in 66 healthy volunteers shows that ID delivery using BD microneedle technology of 1/4 the IM antigen dose is safe, efficient and reliable, resulting in a protective seroconversion rate. In contrast, the epidermal delivery route did not produce an immune respo…

FIA-AAS determination of salicylic acid by a solid-phase reactor of copper carbonate incorporated in polyester resin beads.

1994

Abstract The determination of salicylic acid was carried out by reaction of the drug with copper carbonate entrapped in a polymeric material in a solid-phase reactor; the released cupric ions were monitored by flame atomic absorption at 324.8 nm. The calibration graph is linear over the range 4.0–75 μg ml −1 of salicylic acid, with a relative standard deviation of less than 1.5% and a sample throughout of 257 h −1 . The influence of foreign compounds was studied and the method was applied to the determination of salicylic acid content in two different pharmaceutical formulations.

DEGRADATION OF MATER-BI /WOOD FLOUR BIOCOMPOSITES IN ACTIVE SEWAGE SLUDGE

2009

The mechanical properties of Mater-Bi® are, in general, not adequate for certain applications and the addition of a filler is therefore necessary. Among the different fillers, natural fibres are particularly interesting because they potentially allow improving the performance of the material without compromising its biodegradability. In order to improve the basic mechanical properties of a Mater-Bi grade and to obtain a new, fully biodegradable material, wood flour based composites were prepared by different processing methods. To simulate actual and not laboratory bacterial attack on the prepared materials, in this work we studied the biodegradation of the composites in a real active sewag…
