Contribution to the study of spray formation

2012

The work of this thesis aims to provide and validate tools useful to study and understand the phenomena involved in the injection of fuel, mainly focused on intra-flow injector. These tools are numeric and simulate the formation of a spray. A first part focuses on zero-dimensional modelling. Models which predict these following characteristics of spray like the spray angle, the spray penetration or the liquid length are compared with experimental data. The conclusions are that zero-dimensional modelling provides good results very quickly in some cases. Although, a better understanding of the influence of cavitation on the spray, which requires an understanding of the intra-flow injector, co…

A mathematical model for the prediction of the injected mass diagram of a S.I. engine gas injector

2013

A mathematical model of gaseous fuel solenoid injector for spark ignition engine has been realized and validated through experimental data. The gas injector was studied with particular reference to the complex needle motion during the opening and closing phases, which strongly affects the amount of fuel injected. As is known, in fact, when the injector nozzle is widely open, the mass flow depends only on the fluid pressure and temperature upstream the injector: this allows one to control the injected fuel mass acting on the “injection time” (the period during which the injector solenoid is energized). This makes the correlation between the injected fuel mass and the injection time linear, e…

Tracer-Encapsulated Solid Pellet (TESPEL) injection system for the TJ-II stellarator

2016

A tracer-encapsulated solid pellet (TESPEL) injection system for the TJ-II stellarator was recently developed. In order to reduce the time and cost for the development, we combined a TESPEL injector provided by National Institute for Fusion Science with an existing TJ-II cryogenic pellet injection system. Consequently, the TESPEL injection into the TJ-II plasma was successfully achieved, which was confirmed by several pellet diagnostics including a normal-incidence spectrometer for monitoring a tracer impurity behavior.

Measurement of dynamic characteristics of latex foams by the antiresonance method

2000

Measuring and calculation methods for the dynamic characteristics of tubular specimens of low-modulus latex foams and composites based on them, under longitudinal vibrations in a low-frequency region (up to 200 Hz), are developed. The method is based on the effect of antiresonance. Data on the influence of the basic formulation-processing factors on the dynamic characteristics (gelatination time and content of the plasticizer and chopped fibers) are presented. The results obtained can be used to choose the composition of latex foams for lining acoustic channels, injectors, ejectors, and phase inverters, as well as to control products quality. This method can be applied directly to full-size…

Beam-based alignment of SRF cavities in an electron injector linac

2018

Proper alignment of accelerating cavities is an important issue concerning beam quality of linear rf-accelerators. In particular, SRF cavities of injector linacs using high accelerating gradients on low-velocity electron beams can deteriorate the beam quality significantly when not aligned sufficiently. On the other hand, knowing the exact position of every cavity after several cool-down cycles of a cryomodule can be difficult depending on the particular module design. We will report on operational experience on the SC injector of the Darmstadt superconducting recirculating linac and ERL (S-DALINAC) showing unwanted effects on beam dynamics and beam quality due to cavity misalignment, such…

Applications of the pulsed gas stripper technique at the GSI UNILAC

2017

Abstract In the frame of an upgrade program for the GSI UNILAC, preparing it for the use as an injector system for FAIR, a pulsed gas stripper cell was developed. It utilizes the required low duty cycle by applying a pulsed gas injection instead of a continuous gas inlet. The resulting lower gas consumption rate enables the use of low-Z gas targets over a wide range of stripper target thicknesses. The setup enables an increased flexibility for the accelerator by allowing the gas stripper to be used in time-sharing beam operation matching the capabilities of the GSI UNILAC like the acceleration of different ion beams in quasi-parallel operation. Measured charge state distributions of 238 U, …

The ATLAS tile calorimeter ROD injector and multiplexer board

2011

Abstract The ATLAS Tile Calorimeter is a sampling detector composed by cells made of iron-scintillator tiles. The calorimeter cell signals are digitized in the front-end electronics and transmitted to the Read-Out Drivers (RODs) at the first level trigger rate. The ROD receives triggered data from up to 9856 channels and provides the energy, phase and quality factor of the signals to the second level trigger. The back-end electronics is divided into four partitions containing eight RODs each. Therefore, a total of 32 RODs are used to process and transmit the data of the TileCal detector. In order to emulate the detector signals in the production and commissioning of ROD modules a board call…
