Commenting on Written Arguments as a Part of Argumentation Skills — comparison between students engaged in traditional vs on‐line study

1992

ABSTRACT The use of computer‐mediated communication (CMC) has increased in the area of education. This article reports a study whose aim was to improve the argumentation and scientific thinking skills of university students through argumentative on‐line studying. The research problems dealt on the one hand with learning outcomes in terms of subject content and on the other hand with argumentation skills. The results were compared between on‐line students and students who studied in a traditional way. The results indicated that the traditional group got better learning outcomes than the on‐line students who, by contrast, succeeded better in the tasks of argumentation skills. The findings sug…

A TNF-α Promoter Polymorphism Is Associated with Juvenile Onset Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis

1997

Tumor necrosis factor-α is considered to be one of the important mediators in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. A strong association of juvenile onset psoriasis with the major histocompatibility complex encoded HLA-Cw6 antigen has been reported but it is unclear whether Cw6 itself or a closely linked gene is involved in the pathogenesis. This study has focused on the association of promoter polymorphisms of the major histocompatibility complex encoded tumor necrosis factor-α gene with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Tumor necrosis factor-α promoter polymorphisms were sought by sequence-specific oligonucleotide hybridization and by direct sequencing in Caucasian patients with juvenile onset …

JAK3/STAT5/6 Pathway Alterations Are Associated with Immune Deviation in CD8+ T Cells in Renal Cell Carcinoma Patients

2010

To investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying altered T cell response in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients, we compared autologous and allogeneic CD8(+) T cell responses against RCC line from RCC patients and their HLA-matched donors, using mixed lymphocyte/tumor cell cultures (MLTCs). In addition, we analyzed the expression of molecules associated with cell cycle regulation. Autologous MLTC responder CD8(+) T cells showed cytotoxic activity against RCC cell lines; however the analysis of the distribution of CD8(+) T-cell subsets revealed that allogenic counterparts mediate superior antitumor efficacy. In RCC patients, a decreased proliferative response to tumor, associated with defe…

Automated and Online Eye Blink Artifact Removal from Electroencephalogram

2019

Eyeblink artifacts often contaminates electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, which could potentially confound EEG's interpretation. A lot offline methods are available to remove this artifact, but an online solution is required to remove eyeblink artifacts in near real time for EEG signal to be beneficial in applications such as brain computer interface, (BCI). In this work, approaches that combines unsupervised eyeblink artifact detection with Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) are proposed to automatically identify eyeblink artifacts and remove them in an online setting. The proposed approaches are analysed and evaluated in terms of artifact removal a…

Unsupervised Eye Blink Artifact Identification in Electroencephalogram

2018

International audience; The most prominent type of artifact contaminating electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is the eye blink (EB) artifact. Hence, EB artifact detection is one of the most crucial pre-processing step in EEG signal processing before this artifact can be removed. In this work, an approach that identifies EB artifacts without human supervision and automated varying threshold setting is proposed and evaluated. The algorithm functions on the basis of correlation between two EEG electrodes, Fp1 and Fp2, followed by EB artifact threshold determination utilizing the amplitude displacement from the mean. The proposed approach is validated and evaluated in terms of accuracy and error…

An associative link from geometric to symbolic representations in artificial vision

1991

Recent approaches to modelling the reference of internal symbolic representations of intelligent systems suggest to consider a computational level of a subsymbolic kind. In this paper the integration between symbolic and subsymbolic processing is approached in the framework of the research work currently carried on by the authors in the field of artificial vision. An associative mapping mechanism is defined in order to relate the constructs of the symbolic representation to a geometric model of the observed scene.

Choan Seng Song - teologia z łona Azji

2016

Non-cooperative available bandwidth estimation towards ADSL links

2008

Existing tools for the estimation of the end- to-end available bandwidth require control of both end hosts of the path and this significantly limits their usability. In this paper we present ABwProbe, a single-ended tool for available bandwidth estimation against non-cooperative hosts. Although ABwProbe is general enough to be used on any Internet path, we focus our attention on ADSL links exploring the possibility of measuring the downlink available bandwidth of a non-cooperative ADSL host. We study the effect of cross-traffic on the uplink, finding that only large packets may deteriorate ABwProbe's measurements and we present two techniques to detect and filter the effect of uplink cross-…

Capacity Estimation of ADSL links

2008

Most tools designed to estimate the capacity of an Internet path require access on both end hosts of the path, which makes them difficult to deploy and use. In this paper we present a single-sided technique for measuring the capacity without the active cooperation of the destination host, focusing particularly on ADSL links. Compared to current methods used on broadband hosts, our approach generates two orders of magnitude less traffic and is much less intrusive. Our tool, DSLprobe, exploits the typical characteristics of ADSL, namely its bandwidth asymmetry and the relatively low absolute bandwidth, in order to measure both downlink and uplink capacities and to mitigate the impact of cross…

Phenotype Correlation and Intergenerational Dynamics of the Friedreich Ataxia GAA Trinucleotide Repeat

1997

Summary The Friedreich ataxia (FA) mutation has recently been identified as an unstable trinucleotide GAA repeat present 7–22 times in the normal population but amplified as many as > 1, 000 times in FA. Since it is an autosomal recessive disease, FA does not show typical features observed in other dynamic mutation disorders, such as genetic anticipation. We have analyzed the GAA repeat in 104 FA patients and 163 carrier relatives previously defined by linkage analysis. The GAA expansion was detected in all patients, most (94%) of them being ho-mozygous for the mutation. We have demonstrated that clinical variability in FA is related to the size of the expanded alleles: milder forms of the …
