Sense of coherence and health: evidence from two cross-lagged longitudinal samples

We explored the stability of sense of coherence (SOC) and the relationship between SOC and health in two cross-lagged longitudinal samples by using structural equation modeling. In Study 1, comprising 577 municipal male and female employees, SOC was found to be stable in both sexes. In women, SOC significantly predicted sickness absences in the 4-year follow-up period. A low SOC, but not a high SOC, was associated with health prospects. Surprisingly, SOC did not influence sickness absences among men. Modulation of Spatial O2Tension Distribution in Experimental Tumors by Increasing Arterial O2Supply

Tumor oxygenation has been measured polarographically in s.c. implanted DS-sarcomas on the dorsum of the hind foot of male Sprague-Dawley rats. pO2 was determined in all 3 spatial dimensions and 3-dimensional pO2 distributions as well as the mean extent of confluent areas with pO25 mmHg were calculated. Finally, the effect of elevating arterial pO2 (by carbogen breathing) as well as of increasing tumor blood flow (by angiotensin infusion) on the spatial pO2 distribution was analyzed. Depending on the tumor volume, the spatial pO2 distribution is more or less anisotropic. Does the NO/sGC/cGMP/PKG pathway play a stimulatory role in platelets?

Nitric oxide (NO) stimulates cGMP synthesis by activating its intracellular receptor, soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC). It is a currently prevailing concept that No and cGMP inhibits platelet function. However, the data supporting the inhibitory role of NO/sGC/cGMP in platelets have been obtained either in vitro or using whole body gene deletion that affects vessel wall function. Here we have generated mice with sGC gene deleted only in megakaryocytes and platelets. Using the megakaryocyte- and platelet-specific sGC-deficient mice, we identify a stimulatory role of sGC in platelet activation and in thrombosis in vivo. Changes in glutathione status and the antioxidant system in blood and in cancer cells associate with tumour growth in vivo

The relationship among cancer growth, the glutathione redox cycle and the antioxidant system was studied in blood and in tumour cells. During cancer growth, the glutathione redox status (GSH/GSSG) decreases in blood of Ehrlich ascites tumour-bearing mice. This effect is mainly due to an increase in GSSG levels. Two reasons may explain the increase in blood GSSG: (a) the increase in peroxide production by the tumour that, in addition to changes affecting the glutathione-related and the antioxidant enzyme activities, can lead to GSH oxidation within the red blood cells; and (b) an increase of GSSG release from different tissues into the blood. Differences in the nitric oxide/soluble guanylyl cyclase signalling pathway in the myocardium of neonatal and adult rats

Abstract The effects of a nitric oxide-donor, S -nitroso- N -acetylpenicillamine, and a direct activator of soluble guanylyl cyclase, 3-(5′-hydroxymethyl-2′-furyl)-1-benzyl indazole (YC-1), on force of contraction ( F c ) and L-type Ca 2+ currents ( I Ca(L) ) were investigated in myocardial preparations from neonatal and adult rats. Since hearts from adult and neonatal animals contained 160 and 47 mg/100 g wet weight myoglobin, respectively, its possible interaction with both drugs was also investigated. Antagonism of calcium by zinc in guinea-pig isolated taenia caeci and trachealis muscle

1 In guinea-pig isolated taenia caeci and trachealis bathed in a K+-rich, Ca2+-free medium, CaCl2 (0.01-10 mM) produced a concentration-dependent contraction. Zn2+ (0.01-1 mM), Cd2+ (0.01-1 mM), verapamil (0.01-100 microM) and trifluoperazine (1-100 microM) were effective antagonists of CaCl2-induced responses. 2 Zn2+ and Cd2+ in concentrations from 0.01 to 1 mM were without effect on the tone of taenia and trachea in normal Tris solution. Dependence of hepatic gluconeogenesis on PO2: inhibitory effects of halothane

The dependence of gluconeogenesis and O2 uptake on PO2 in isolated rat hepatocytes is presented. Maintenance of steady-state PO2 was achieved with an oxystat system (Biochem. J. 236: 765–769, 1986). O2 uptake showed a half-maximal (K0.5) value of 0.5 Torr PO2, whereas the glucose synthesis rate was half-maximal at 1.2 Torr PO2. Halothane at concentrations greater than 1 mM exerted a parallel inhibition of O2 uptake and glucose synthesis at all PO2 levels studied. In contrast, at halothane concentrations less than 1 mM, inhibition of glucose synthesis occurred only at less than 20 Torr PO2. Blood Glutathione as an Index of Radiation-Induced Oxidative Stress in Mice and Humans

Abstract The effect of x-rays on GSH and GSSG levels in blood was studied in mice and humans. An HPLC method that we recently developed was applied to accurately determine GSSG levels in blood. The glutathione redox status (GSH/GSSG) decreases after irradiation. This effect is mainly due to an increase in GSSG levels. Mice received single fraction radiotherapy, at total doses of 1.0 to 7.0 Gy. Changes in GSSG in mouse blood can be detected 10 min after irradiation and last for 6 h within a range of 2.0–7.0 Gy. In this study we present evidence of braided plant fibres and basketry imprints on clay recovered from Coves de Santa Maira, a Palaeolithic-Mesolithic cave site located in the Mediterranean region of Spain. The anatomical features of these organic fibre remains were identified in the archaeological material and compared with modern Stipa tenacissima (esparto grass). Based on direct dating, the fragments of esparto cord from our site are the oldest worked plant fibres in Europe. Sixty fragments of fired clay are described.
