The migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea: Empirical evidence on policy interventions

Abstract This paper presents a novel set of empirical evidence to explore several hypotheses regarding the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. The political instability in transit countries, such as Libya, that made pre-existent repatriation policies ineffective, called for several search-and-rescue operations in the Mediterranean, which in turn have been wrongly accused of fostering illegal immigration and increasing deaths at sea. The empirical results show that the main determinants of the departures are several root causes at the departing African countries, underlining the importance of fighting human smuggling networks. Polarization mode dispersion and vectorial modulational instability in air silica microstructure fiber

The birefringence of an air-silica microstructure fiber has been studied by measurement of the fiber polarization mode dispersion (PMD) over the wavelength range 545-640 nm. The experimental results are shown to be in good agreement with vectorial numerical calculations, assuming an elliptical core with an eccentricity of 7%. We also report controlled experiments studying nonlinear vectorial modulation instability in the fiber, yielding 3.9-THz modulational instability sideband shifts that are in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on the calculated fiber dispersion and PMD characteristics.

AbstractWe apply the frozen phonon and molecular dynamics methods within the semiempirical orthogonal tight-binding framework to study the anomalous behaviour of the (0001) optical longitudinal (LO) and transverse (TO) phonons in the low temperature hep phase of Ti, and the ⅔[111]L and ½[110]T1 phonons in the high temperature bec phase. We demonstrate that, in agreement with previous findings in Zr, the anomalous thermal frequency shifts in hep Ti are related to the strong coupling of the electron density of states (DOS) to the particular lattice distortions. Demyelination patterns in a mathematical model of multiple sclerosis.

In this paper we derive a reaction-diffusion-chemotaxis model for the dynamics of multiple sclerosis. We focus on the early inflammatory phase of the disease characterized by activated local microglia, with the recruitment of a systemically activated immune response, and by oligodendrocyte apoptosis. The model consists of three equations describing the evolution of macrophages, cytokine and apoptotic oligodendrocytes. The main driving mechanism is the chemotactic motion of macrophages in response to a chemical gradient provided by the cytokines. It consists also of a reconsideration of the classical theoretical concepts used in Reactivity of Solids. The DC-DC switching power converters are highly nonlinear systems. Consequently, the conventional linear controls based on averaging and linearization techniques will result in poor dynamic performance or system instability. Different immunohistochemical programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) assays and scorings have been reported to yield variable results in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). We compared the analytical concordance and reproducibility of four clinically relevant PD-L1 assays assessing immune cell (IC) score, tumor proportion score (TPS), and combined positive score (CPS) in TNBC.
