Stable and metastable hard-sphere crystals in fundamental measure theory

2013

Using fully minimized fundamental measure functionals, we investigate free energies, vacancy concentrations and density distributions for bcc, fcc and hcp hard-sphere crystals. Results are complemented by an approach due to Stillinger which is based on expanding the crystal partition function in terms of the number n of free particles while the remaining particles are frozen at their ideal lattice positions. The free energies of fcc/hcp and one branch of bcc agree well with Stillinger's approach truncated at n=2. A second branch of bcc solutions features rather spread-out density distributions around lattice sites and large equilibrium vacancy concentrations and is presumably linked to the …

Edge pinch instability of liquid metal sheet in a transverse high-frequency AC magnetic field

2006

We analyze the linear stability of the edge of a thin liquid metal layer subject to a transverse high-frequency AC magnetic field. The layer is treated as a perfectly conducting liquid sheet that allows us to solve the problem analytically for both a semi-infinite geometry with a straight edge and a thin disk of finite radius. It is shown that the long-wave perturbations of a straight edge are monotonically unstable when the wave number exceeds some critical value $k_c,$ which is determined by the surface tension and the linear density of the electromagnetic force acting on the edge. The higher the density of electromagnetic force, the shorter the critical wavelength. The perturbations with…

Model calculations for vibrational properties of disordered solids and the “boson peak”

1999

Abstract It is demonstrated that a disordered system of coupled classical harmonic oscillators with a continuous distribution of coupling parameters exhibits generally a low-frequency enhancement (“boson peak”) of the density of states, as compared with the Debye law. This phenomenon is most pronounced if the system is close to an instability. This is shown by means of a scalar model on a simple cubic lattice. The force constants are assumed to fluctuate from bond to bond according to a Gaussian distribution which is truncated at its lower end. The model is solved for the density of states and the one-phonon dynamic structure factor S(q, ω) by applying the two-site coherent potential approx…

A theoretical study on threshold conditions of modulation instability in oppositely directed couplers

2016

We theoretically investigate threshold conditions to observe modulation instability (MI) in a two-core nonlinear oppositely directed coupler (ODC) with a negative-index material (NIM) channel. Using linear stability analysis, we obtain an expression for the instability gain. The analysis shows, with two discrete instability regions, that the band at lower values of f (ratio of the backward to forward-propagating waves amplitude) is a result of the nonlinear positive index material (PIM) channel while the broader range band is a consequence of the nonlinear NIM channel. Both bands are highly sensitive to system parameters. We demonstrate that MI has a threshold-like condition in the normal d…

Stabilisation of dispersion-managed soliton transmissions by nonlinear gain

1999

Nonlinear gain is shown to be effective in suppressing the radiative background that may not be separated from the signal when the average dispersion is close to zero in dispersion-managed soliton transmissions. By correctly combining nonlinear gain and filtering, the instability introduced by guiding filters can be avoided.

Rayleigh–Bénard instability of Czochralski configuration in a transverse magnetic field

2012

Abstract The linear instability of a rotating conducting liquid cylinder heated from below in a horizontal magnetic field is considered numerically. A condition for the magnetic suppression of the bulk rotation is obtained. If the bulk is rotation dominated then the linear instability is slightly delayed by the field and sets in as a rotating wave. If the bulk is dominated by the magnetic field then the instability has the form of field aligned convection rolls. Outside thin boundary layers the instability then becomes increasingly similar to the onset in a plain channel. The results are discussed in light of previous silicon growth experiments and existing knowledge from related problems.

Convection in the Surface Layers of Neutron Stars

1997

During some phases of a neutron star's evolution, the temperature gradient in the surface layers, calculated assuming only radiative and conductive transport, may exceed the adiabatic gradient. This superadiabatic gradient is the necessary (but not sufficient) condition for convective instability. The present paper examines the sufficiency condition for the onset of convection in neutron stars in the presence of a strong magnetic field. It is shown that the large fields typically found in neutron stars—about 1011 to 1013 G—stabilize the atmosphere against convection. Convective instability can arise only in neutron stars with very weak magnetic fields, ≤108-109 G. Convective motions in such…

SPH simulations of Shakura-Sunyaev instability at intermediate accretion rates

2003

We show that a standard Shakura-Sunyaev accretion disc around a black hole with an accretion rate lower than the critical Eddington limit does show the instability in the radiation pressure dominated zone. We obtain this result performing time-dependent simulations of accretion disks for a set of values of the viscosity parameter and accretion rate. In particular we always find the occurrence of the collapse of the disc: the instability develops always towards a collapsed gas pressure dominated disc and not towards the expansion. This result is valid for all initial configurations we tested. We find significant convective heat flux that increases the instability development time, but is not…

Gravitational Wave Echo of Relaxion Trapping

2021

To solve the hierarchy problem, the relaxion must remain trapped in the correct minimum, even if the electroweak symmetry is restored after reheating. In this scenario, the relaxion starts rolling again until the backreaction potential, with its set of local minima, reappears. Depending on the time of barrier reappearance, Hubble friction alone may be insufficient to retrap the relaxion in a large portion of the parameter space. Thus, an additional source of friction is required, which might be provided by coupling to a dark photon. The dark photon experiences a tachyonic instability as the relaxion rolls, which slows down the relaxion by backreacting to its motion, and efficiently creates a…
