Local atomic and electronic structure of tungsten ions in AWO4 crystals of scheelite and wolframite types

2001

Abstract X-ray absorption spectroscopy was used to study the local atomic and electronic structure of tungsten ions in polycrystalline scheelite CaWO4 and wolframite-type ZnWO4 and NiWO4. The W L1- and L3-edges X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) signals suggest tetrahedral coordination of tungsten ions in CaWO4 and strongly distorted octahedral coordination in ZnWO4 and NiWO4. Accurate analysis of the W L3-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) signals by the regularization procedure was performed to reconstruct the radial distribution functions within the first coordination shell around tungsten atoms in AWO4 crystals and polycrystalline WO3, which was utilized for…

Electron crystallography and non-linear optics

1999

Electron crystallography can be used to obtain specific information about molecular parameters such as the polarisability, dipole moment, and hyperpolarisability. In this, work we show how a combination of quantum mechanics and simulation methods can be used to solve several unknown organic structures and how the calculated molecular parameters can be used to predict the corresponding physical properties of the crystals.

Up-Conversion Luminescence Processes in NaLaF4 Doped with Tm3+ and Yb3+ and Dependence on Tm3+ Concentration and Temperature

2021

In this work, luminescence processes in polycrystalline NaLaF4:Tm3+ and NaLaF4:Tm3+,Yb3+ materials were studied. Luminescence spectra and decay kinetics measurements were performed for NaLaF4 doped with various Tm3+ concentrations (0.01, 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 2 mol%) under direct excitation to 3P0, 1D2, 1G4, and 3H4 states. It was found that some of the Tm3+ excited states are more affected by Tm3+ concentration than other states. Under infrared excitation of Yb3+, energy transfer to Tm3+ occurred and intensive ultraviolet and blue up-conversion luminescence was observed. Possible up-conversion mechanisms are discussed. Spectroscopic measurements show that long-duration excitation radiation red…

Microwave-based gas sensor with phthalocyanine film at room temperature

2013

Abstract This work presents the development of a microwave gas sensor at room temperature. The design of the sensor includes a coplanar grounded wave guide where is deposited a molecular gas sensing material. In this study, the sensitive material is a thin layer of cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc), sensitive to ammonia and toluene. Submitted to an electromagnetic incident wave in the microwave range, the sensor response is a reflected wave. In the presence of pollutant, the reflected wave shape is specific to the species concentrations. The results interpretation is led at each frequency by the evaluation of the reflected coefficient, which traduces the ratio between the reflected wave over the…

Heterogeneous kinetics: from solid–gas reaction to solid–liquid dissolution

2002

Abstract The extension of the formal kinetics of solid–gas reactions to solid–liquid dissolution is investigated theoretically. The work is based on modelling the dissolution of a solid in a closed system by a stoichiometrically simple chemical reaction A solid ⇄A liquid proceeding up to either an equilibrium state if the solid phase is initially in excess or exhaustion in the reverse situation. The initial amount of solid compared to the capacity of the liquid phase appears as a major factor of complexity. First, the rate equation is formulated in terms of the intensive variables without any assumption about the mechanism and the rate-limiting step. The resulting equations are compared to …

Narrow Band Solid-Liquid Composite Arrangements: Alternative Solutions for Phononic Crystal-Based Liquid Sensors

2019

Periodic elastic composite structures attract great attention. They offer the ability to design artificial properties to advance the control over the propagation of elastic/acoustic waves. In previous work, we drew attention to composite periodic structures comprising liquids. It was shown that the transmission spectrum of the structure, specifically a well-isolated peak, follows the material properties of liquid constituent in a distinct manner. This idea was realized in several liquid sensor concepts that launched the field of phononic crystal liquid sensors. In this work we introduce a novel concept&mdash

The Wide Field Imager of the International X-ray Observatory

2010

The International X-ray Observatory (IXO) will be a joint X-ray observatory mission by ESA, NASA and JAXA. It will have a large effective area (3 m 2 at 1.25 keV) grazing incidence mirror system with good angular resolution (5 arcsec at 0.1–10 keV) and will feature a comprehensive suite of scientific instruments: an X-ray Microcalorimeter Spectrometer, a High Time Resolution Spectrometer, an X-ray Polarimeter, an X-ray Grating Spectrometer, a Hard X-ray Imager and a Wide-Field Imager. The Wide Field Imager (WFI) has a field-of-view of 18 ft 18 ft. It will be sensitive between 0.1 and 15 keV, offer the full angular resolution of the mirrors and good energy resolution. The WFI will be imple…

The Athena X-ray Integral Field Unit: a consolidated design for the system requirement review of the preliminary definition phase

2023

The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (i…

B-MINE, the balloon-borne microcalorimeter nuclear line explorer

2001

B-MINE is a concept for a balloon mission designed to probe the deepest regions of a supernova explosion by detecting Ti-44 emission at 68 keV with spatial and spectral resolutions that are sufficient to determine the extent and velocity distribution of the Ti-44 emitting region. The payload introduces the concept of focusing optics and microcalorimeter spectroscopy to nuclear line emission astrophysics. B-MINE has a thin, plastic foil telescope multilayered to maximize the reflectivity in a 20 keV band centered at 68 keV and a microcalorimeter array optimized for the same energy band. This combination provides a reduced background, an energy resolution of 50 eV and a 3sigma sensitivity in …

Ballistic Deficit Pulse Processing in Cadmium-Zinc-Telluride Pixel Detectors for High-Flux X-ray Measurements.

2022

High-flux X-ray measurements with high-energy resolution and high throughput require the mitigation of pile-up and dead time effects. The reduction of the time width of the shaped pulses is a key approach, taking into account the distortions from the ballistic deficit, non-linearity, and time instabilities. In this work, we will present the performance of cadmium–zinc–telluride (CdZnTe or CZT) pixel detectors equipped with digital shapers faster than the preamplifier peaking times (ballistic deficit pulse processing). The effects on energy resolution, throughput, energy-linearity, time stability, charge sharing, and pile-up are shown. The results highlight the absence of time instabilities …
