Nonlinear sculpturing of optical pulses with normally dispersive fiber-based devices

2018

International audience; We present a general method to determine the parameters of nonlinear pulse shaping systems based on pulse propagation in a normally dispersive fiber that are required to achieve the generation of pulses with various specified temporal properties. The nonlinear shaping process is reduced to a numerical optimization problem over a three-dimensional space, where the intersections of different surfaces provide the means to quickly identify the sets of parameters of interest. We also show that the implementation of a machine-learning strategy can efficiently address the multi-parameter optimization problem being studied.

2019

(Abridged) The Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE) is an end-to-end science platform for the design, execution and scientific exploitation of spectroscopic surveys. It will unveil the composition and dynamics of the faint Universe and impact nearly every field of astrophysics across all spatial scales, from individual stars to the largest scale structures in the Universe. Major pillars in the science program for MSE include (i) the ultimate Gaia follow-up facility for understanding the chemistry and dynamics of the distant Milky Way, including the outer disk and faint stellar halo at high spectral resolution (ii) galaxy formation and evolution at cosmic noon, via the type of revolutionary…

Radial electron fluence around ion tracks as a new physical parameter for the detection threshold of PADC using Geant4-DNA toolkit

2018

International audience; The detection threshold of poly(allyl dyglycol carbonate), PADC, for C ions is determined as 55 eV/nm in stopping power, which is significantly higher than that for proton and He ions. The stopping power is not a universal parameter for expressing the detection threshold of PADC. A new physical parameter of Radial Electron Fluence around Ion Tracks, REFIT, is proposed to describe the detection threshold of PADC. It is defined as the number density of electrons passing through the surface of a cylinder of a certain radius that is co-axial with the trajectory. Furthermore, preliminary calculations are presently being performed using the Monte Carlo simulation code of G…

Low-cost viscometer based on energy dissipation in viscous liquids

2001

We describe a new type of low-cost easy-to-use viscometer based on the temperature elevation in a liquid under shear flow. After calibration, this instrument can be used to measure the apparent steady state viscosity for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids with no yield stress. We compute the rise in temperature due to viscous dissipation in a Couette cell and compare it to experimental results for different fluids. We show that the variation of the temperature with shear rate can be used to characterize the rheological behaviour of viscous fluids and to evaluate their viscosity in a large domain, from typically a few cP up to more than 10 P, with an accuracy of about ±5%. In contrast …

Molecular semiconductor-doped insulator (MSDI) heterojunctions as new transducers for chemical sensors

2011

International audience; This article describes a new principle of transduction involving an heterojunction between a Molecular Semiconductor and a Doped Insulator (MSDI). Herein, we report on an MSDI-based sensor featuring an heterojunction between a lutetium bisphthalocyanine (LuPc), which acts as Molecular Semiconductor (MS) and a thin film of Doped Insulator (DI) made of substituted or fluorinated copper phthalocyanine (CuFPc, where = 0, 8, 16). Previously, we reported the peculiar effect of the heterojunction on the MSDI's electronic behavior, suggesting this device as a new kind of transducer for gas chemosensing. Indeed, of particular significance was the key role of modulator played …

Evaluation of the areal material distribution of paper from its optical transmission image

2011

International audience; The goal of this study was to evaluate the areal mass distribution (defined as the X-ray transmission image) of paper from its optical transmission image. A Bayesian inversion framework was used in the related deconvolution process so as to combine indirect optical information with a priori knowledge about the type of paper imaged. The a priori knowledge was expressed in the form of an empirical Besov space prior distribution constructed in a computationally effective way using the wavelet transform. The estimation process took the form of a large-scale optimization problem, which was in turn solved using the gradient descent method of Barzilai and Borwein. It was de…

Système de prise d'images haute résolution pour l'analyse de projection de particules : application à l'épandage centrifuge d'engrais

2002

This paper describes the design of a high resolution low cost imaging system for the analysis of high speed particle projection. This system, based on a camera and a set of flashes, is used to characterize the centrifugal spreading of fertilizer particles ejected at speeds of environ 30 m s. Multiexposure images collected with the camera installed perpendicular to the output flow of granules are analysed to estimate the trajectories of the fertilizer granules. Very good results are obtained with the Markov random fields method, in comparison with others.

Correlation of the highest-energy cosmic rays with the positions of nearby active galactic nuclei

2008

Data collected by the Pierre Auger Observatory provide evidence for anisotropy in the arrival directions of the cosmic rays with the ighest-energies, which are correlated with the positions of relatively nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN) [Pierre Auger Collaboration, Science 318 (2007) 938]. The correlation has maximum significance for cosmic rays with energy greater than ~6 x 1019 eV and AGN at a distance less than ~75 Mpc. We have confirmed the anisotropy at a confidence level of more than 99% through a test with parameters specified a priori, using an independent data set. The observed correlation is compatible with the hypothesis that cosmic rays with the highest-energies originate fro…

Observation of the suppression of the flux of cosmic rays above 4x10^19eV

2008

The energy spectrum of cosmic rays above 2.5 × 10¹⁸ eV, derived from 20,000 events recorded at the Pierre Auger Observatory, is described. The spectral index γ of the particle flux, J ∝ E-γ, at energies between 4 × 10¹⁸ eV and 4 × 10¹⁹ eV is 2.69 ± 0.02(stat) ± 0.06(syst), steepening to 4.2 ± 0.4(stat) ± 0.06(syst) at higher energies. The hypothesis of a single power law is rejected with a significance greater than 6 standard deviations. The data are consistent with the prediction by Greisen and by Zatsepin and Kuz'min.
