Human Activity Signatures Captured under Different Directions Using SISO and MIMO Radar Systems
2022
In this paper, we highlight and resolve the shortcomings of single-input single-output (SISO) millimeter wave (mm-Wave) radar systems for human activity recognition (HAR). A 2×2 distributed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar framework is presented to capture human activity signatures under realistic conditions in indoor environments. We propose to distribute the two pairs of collocated transmitter–receiver antennas in order to illuminate the indoor environment from different perspectives. For the proposed MIMO system, we measure the time-variant (TV) radial velocity distribution and TV mean radial velocity to observe the signatures of human activities. We deploy the Anc…
Latest reforms in Finnish doctoral education in light of recent European developments
2017
Doctoral education as a policy field is an important link between educational, research and innovation policies. It is gaining importance in European and national policy discussions. Doctoral education policies are increasingly formulated at the supranational level, even though the European Commission does not possess formal competence in terms of authority over the educational policies. Consequently, policy steering is mostly performed at the national level. In this article, we examine Finnish doctoral education from the steering perspective in a European context. We describe the development and steering of Finnish doctoral education, as well as the current doctoral education policies and …
Neutrino-nuclear responses for astro-neutrinos, single beta decays and double beta decays
2019
Neutrino–nuclear responses associated with astro-neutrinos, single beta decays and double beta decays are crucial in studies of neutrino properties of interest for astro-particle physics. The present report reviews briefly recent studies of the neutrino–nuclear responses from both experimental and theoretical points of view in order to obtain a consistent understanding of the many facets of the neutrino–nuclear responses. Subjects discussed in this review include (i) experimental studies of neutrino–nuclear responses by means of single beta decays, charge-exchange nuclear reactions, muon- photon- and neutrino–nuclear reactions, and nucleon-transfer reactions, (ii) implications of and discus…
Propulsion Calculated by Force and Displacement of Center of Mass in Treadmill Cross-Country Skiing
2022
This study evaluated two approaches for estimating the total propulsive force on a skier’s center of mass (COM) with double-poling (DP) and V2-skating (V2) skiing techniques. We also assessed the accuracy and the stability of each approach by changing the speed and the incline of the treadmill. A total of 10 cross-country skiers participated in this study. Force measurement bindings, pole force sensors, and an eight-camera Vicon system were used for data collection. The coefficient of multiple correlation (CMC) was calculated to evaluate the similarity between the force curves. Mean absolute force differences between the estimated values and the reference value were computed to evalua…
Canonical correlation in multivariate time series analysis
1997
We analyze a class o f state space identification algorithms for time series, based on canonical correlation analysis in the ligth of recent results on stochastic systems theory calle d « subspace methods » .These can be describe as covariance estimation followed b y stochastic realization .The methods offer the major advantage o f converting the nonlinear parameter estimation phase in traditional V A R M A models identification in to the solution o f Riccati equation but introduce at the same time some no n trivial mathematical problem s related to positivity. The states o f the forward -backward innovations representation have an interpretation : Instrumental Variables estimators .
Student engagement in Finnish lower secondary school
2016
This thesis examined the engagement of students at lower secondary schools in Finland. Two independent cross-sectional data sets collected in 2010 (N = 821) and 2013 (N = 2485) were analyzed using both variable-centered and personcentered methods. The thesis analyzed the associations between teacher– student relationships, family support for students’ learning, peer support at school, control and relevance of school work, students’ future aspirations and goals, school burnout, behavior at school, and truancy from school. The results offered three main findings. First, the structure of Finnish lower secondary school students’ affective and cognitive engagement, as assessed using the Finnish …
Palaeogenetics and cultural heritage. Species determination and STR-genotyping from ancient DNA in art and artefacts
2000
Abstract In recent years, a few papers have addressed the palaeogenetic analysis of cultural, historical and archaeological artefacts. We provide an overview of the individual published articles and then describe the results we had in the framework of a palaeogenetic research project involving various historical and prehistoric finds from museums, archaeological excavations, and libraries. We show that ancient DNA can be isolated from most of the various biomaterials (leather, parchment, glue, binding media, crusted organic plant remains in containers). Short pieces of degraded DNA are used, on the one hand, to determine the organic remnant’s genus/species of origin, and on the other hand, …
Comparative parallel characterization of particle populations with two mass spectrometric systems LAMPAS 2 and SPASS
2006
Abstract Two transportable laser mass spectrometers, Single Particle Analysis and Sizing System (SPASS) and Laser Mass Analyzer for Particles in the Airborne State (LAMPAS 2), have been applied to investigate the dependence of spectra patterns on instrumental parameters and data evaluation procedures in an inter-comparison experiment. Laboratory experiments showed the spectral response of both instruments for mineral particles before and after heterogeneous reactions. During a period of 47 h, both instruments determined size and chemical composition of several thousand single particles of an ambient particle population. Time-resolved evaluation (1-h resolution) of specific ion signals, whic…
A study of physical processes in microplasma capillary discharges
2011
We continue the research of low-pressure capillary discharge lamps of 500 μ m in radius in Ar/Hg, Kr/Hg and Xe/Hg mixtures. In the previous paper, an experimental approach which combines the optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and tomographic methods was developed to study the capillary discharge. The present work is focused on interpretation of the tomographic reconstruction results for understanding the physical processes occurring in a capillary plasma. Analyzing the results of reconstruction, it was concluded that the radial profiles of Ar, Kr and Xe emission coefficients are in a good agreement with the Schottky theory. According to the Schottky model, ionization processes in plasma a…
