HyperIO: A Hypervisor-Based Framework for Secure IO

Malware often attempts to steal input and output through human interface devices to obtain confidential information. We propose to use a thin hypervisor, called “HyperIO”, to realize a secure path between input and output devices using a partial implementation of device drivers. We apply our approach using two security systems built on HyperIO: FireSafe and ClipCrypt. FireSafe is a web browser extension which allows a remote web server to display and receive sensitive user information securely. ClipCrypt enables the user to securely enter and view their confidential information in commodity Windows applications.

Electronic Design for a Bleeding Detector to be Used in Intraoperative Radiotherapy Applications

An electronic design for a bleeding detector used with mobile linac during intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) is presented. It consists on a readout circuit based on a De Sauty Bridge and a wireless power supply using a supercapacitor. The goal is the measurement of the height of fluid present in the applicator in order to avoid a misadministration dose during the irradiation process. A minimum measurement height of 5 mm is required by clinic to be confident with the selected radiation dose. The measurement circuit uses a capacitive sensor which detects variations lower than 0.1 pF. Phasor-FLIM analysis of Thioflavin T self-quenching in Concanavalin amyloid fibrils

The formation of amyloid structures has traditionally been related to human neurodegenerative pathologies and, in recent years, the interest in these highly stable nanostructures was extended to biomaterial sciences. A common method to monitor amyloid growth is the analysis of Thioflavin T fluorescence. The use of this highly selective dye, diffused worldwide, allows mechanistic studies of supramolecular assemblies also giving back important insight on the structure of these aggregates. Laser-Induced Fluorescence Imaging of Paper Surfaces

Laser-induced fluorescence imaging has been used to study the microstructure of paper surfaces. Pulses from a XeCl-excimer laser, 10 ns in duration at 308 nm, were used for excitation, and fluorescence was collected at 420 nm. The excitation spot diameter was approximately 20 µm, and the sampling interval 0.15 mm. Within an area of 5*5 mm2, 1023 sampling points were recorded to generate 3D fluorescence maps of paper surfaces. Papers containing fluorescence whitening agents (FWAs) gave the highest average fluorescence signals. Coated papers with no FW As show weaker signals than the base sheet. Azide and sulfonylazide functionalized fluorophores for the selective and sensitive detection of hydrogen sulfide

[EN] Three fluorescent probes (1–3) for the selective and sensitive detection of hydrogen sulfide have been synthesized and characterized. Probe 1 is a coumarin derivative functionalized with an azide moiety whereas 2 contain the azide reactive group into a naphthalene fluorophore backbone. Probe 3 is composed also by a naphthalene fluorophore but, in this case, functionalized with a sulfonylazide reactive moiety. Probes 1 and 3 are non-fluorescent whereas 2 is weakly emissive in HEPES (10 mM, pH 7.4)–DMSO 99:1 (v/v). An experiment to study the structure of the focal volume in apertured focusing systems

We present a simple experiment, specifically designed for students of undergraduate optics courses, where the influence of an aperture stop position on the three-dimensional structure of the focal volume of focusing systems is studied. The experiment, which involves only simple optical elements, permits an undergraduate student to generate different focal structures by simply axially displacing the aperture stop.

Difference temperature-to-time electronic interface based on a thermistor-to-generalized impedance converter

Abstract In this work a difference temperature-to-time converter is shown using two thermistors working in a DC generalized impedance converter. Voltage drop in one of the thermistors depends on the temperature difference between them. This voltage is compared with a time varying exponential reference voltage obtaining a time interval at the output circuit with good linear dependence with respect to the input temperature difference. Experimental results are obtained showing a new generalized impedance converter application. The implemented circuit was characterized by a repeatability of 1.0%, a reproducibility of 4.5% and a relative accuracy of 1.3%.

Testing a portable laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy system on geological samples.

9 pages; International audience; This paper illustrates the potentialities of a home-made portable LIBS (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy) instrument in Earth sciences, more particularly in geochemically recognizing (i) tephra layers in lacustrine sediments and (ii) fossilization processes in ammonites. Abundances for selected lines of Al, Ca, Fe, Ti, Ba and Na were determined in lacustrine chalk sediments of the Jura, where the Laacher See Tephra (LST) layer is recorded.
