Neutron detection and γ-ray suppression using artificial neural networks with the liquid scintillators BC-501A and BC-537

Abstract In this work we present a comparison between the two liquid scintillators BC-501A and BC-537 in terms of their performance regarding the pulse-shape discrimination between neutrons and γ rays. Special emphasis is put on the application of artificial neural networks . The results show a systematically higher γ -ray rejection ratio for BC-501A compared to BC-537 applying the commonly used charge comparison method. Using the artificial neural network approach the discrimination quality was improved to more than 95% rejection efficiency of γ rays over the energy range 150 to 1000 keV for both BC-501A and BC-537. Technical design report for the $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ Barrel DIRC detector

The $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) experiment will be one of the four flagship experiments at the new international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ will address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using high-intensity cooled antiproton beams with momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c and a design luminosity of up to 2 × 1032 cm−2 s−1. Conversion electron and beta decay spectroscopy at SHIP

Abstract Novel methods for internal conversion electron and β -decay spectroscopy at the focal plane of a recoil separator are discussed. As an example the experimental data collected at the focal plane of the velocity filter SHIP (GSI, Darmstadt) are presented and compared with the results of the GEANT Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that the simultaneous detection of conversion electrons, γ -rays and X-rays is possible, which significantly broadens the range of applications of this and similar systems.

Testbeam studies of production modules of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter

We report test beam studies of {11\,\%} of the production ATLAS Tile Calorimeter modules. The modules were equipped with production front-end electronics and all the calibration systems planned for the final detector. The studies used muon, electron and hadron beams ranging in energy from 3~GeV to 350~GeV. Two independent studies showed that the light yield of the calorimeter was $\sim 70$~pe/GeV, exceeding the design goal by {40\,\%}. Electron beams provided a calibration of the modules at the electromagnetic energy scale. Over 200~calorimeter cells the variation of the response was {2.4\,\%}. Measurements of the muon component of extensive air showers at 320m.w.e. underground

Abstract The ALEPH detector at LEP has been supplemented with five scintillator telescopes to measure the muon component of cosmic ray air showers underground. The emphasis of the present analysis of a new data set is to measure coincidences over distances up to about 1 km which are sensitive to the forward production of hadronic interactions and the chemical composition of primary cosmic rays in the energy range around 1015 eV. First results indicate that the observed decoherence curve of muons is compatible with a light primary composition and the arrival directions of muons show no obvious clustering in galactic coordinates.

Performance of the ATLAS Hadronic End-Cap Calorimeter in Beam Tests

Abstract Modules of the ATLAS liquid argon Hadronic End-cap Calorimeter (HEC) were exposed to beams of electrons, muons and pions in the energy range 6⩽ E ⩽200 GeV at the CERN SPS. A description of the HEC and of the beam test setup are given. Results on the energy response and resolution are presented and compared with simulations. The ATLAS energy resolution for jets in the end-cap region is inferred and meets the ATLAS requirements.

Triangle singularity enhancing isospin violation in ${\bar{{\rm{B}}}}_{{\rm{s}}}^{0}\to {\rm{J}}/{\rm{\psi }}{\pi }^{0}{{\rm{f}}}_{0}(980)$

We perform calculations for the and reactions, showing that the first is isospin-suppressed while the second is isospin-allowed. The reaction proceeds via a triangle mechanism, with , followed by the decay K* → Kπ and a further fusion of into the or a0(980). We show that the mechanism develops a singularity around the π0 f0(980) or π0 a0(980) invariant mass of 1420 MeV, where the π0 f0 and π0 a0 decay modes are magnified and also the ratio of π0 f0 to π0 a0 production. Using experimental information for the decay, we are able to obtain absolute values for the reactions studied which fall into the experimentally accessible range. Results of prototype studies for a spaghetti calorimeter

In the framework of the LAA project, prototypes for a new type of calorimeter, intended for the detection of both electromagnetic (e.m.) and hadronic showers, muons and missing energy (e.g. neutrinos) at high-luminosity multi-TeV pp colliders, were tested. The detector consists of scintillating plastic fibres embedded in a lead matrix at a volume ratio 1:4, such as to achieve compensation. The optimization of the construction of the detector modules is described, as well as the performance concerning e.m. shower and muon detection and e/π separation. High energy gamma ray counterparts of astrophysical sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays

If ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are accelerated at astrophysical point sources, the identification of such sources can be achieved if there is some kind of radiation at observable wavelengths that may be associated with the acceleration and/or propagation processes. No radiation of this type has so far been detected or at least no such connection has been claimed. The process of photopion production during the propagation of UHECRs from the sources to the Earth results in the generation of charged and neutral pions. Electron beam studies of light collection in a scintillating counter with embedded fibers

The light collection of several fiber configurations embedded in a box-shaped plastic scintillating counter was studied by scanning with minimum ionizing electrons. The light was read out by silicon photomultipliers at both ends. The light yield produced by the 855-MeV beam of the Mainz Microtron showed a strong dependence on the transverse distance from the beam position to the fibers. The observations were modeled by attributing the collection of indirect light inside of the counter and of direct light reaching a fiber to the total light yield.
