Towards a new measurement of the neutron electric dipole moment

2009

International audience; The effort towards a new measurement of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) at the Paul Scherrer Institut's (PSI) new high intensity source of ultracold neutrons (UCN) is described. The experimental technique relies on Ramsey's method of separated oscillatory fields, using UCN in vacuum with the apparatus at ambient temperature. In the first phase, R&D towards the upgrade of the RAL/Sussex/ILL apparatus is being performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL). In the second phase the apparatus, moved from ILL to PSI, will allow an improvement in experimental sensitivity by a factor of 5. In the third phase, a new spectrometer should gain another order of magnitud…

The Matrix Element Method and its Application to Measurements of the Top Quark Mass

2010

The most precise measurements of the top quark mass are based on the Matrix Element method. We present a detailed description of this analysis method, taking the measurements of the top quark mass in final states with one and two charged leptons as concrete examples. In addition, we show how the Matrix Element method is suitable to reduce the dominant systematic uncertainties related to detector effects, by treating the absolute energy scales for b-quark and light-quark jets independently as free parameters in a simultaneous fit together with the top quark mass. While the determination of the light-quark jet energy scale has already been applied in several recent measurements, the separate …

JYFLTRAP: a cylindrical Penning trap for isobaric beam purification at IGISOL

2004

Abstract A Penning trap has been installed for isobaric beam purification at the IGISOL-facility at the University of Jyvaskyla. In this paper, the technical details of this new device together with results of the first tests are presented. The mass resolving power, depending on the excitation parameters and the ion species, can be as high as 145 000 and the total transmission has been determined to be 17%. In addition, it is shown that with this experimental setup it is possible to measure atomic masses up to A=120 with accuracies of approximately 50 keV .

Wavelet analysis of experimental results for coupled structural–hydraulic behavior of the EURISOL target mock-up

2009

During test runs of the The European Isotope Separation On-Line (EURISOL) target mock-up performed in December 2008, data were recorded for strain gages and for acceleration sensors. In this paper, the applicability of wavelet analysis for detecting the onset and the status of flow-induced cavitation is investigated for the first time. Even under noisy conditions, the detection of incipient cavitation was possible when combining measurements with data from structural and fluid dynamic simulations. The distribution of coefficients of suitably selected wavelets yields a quantitative measure for the extent of cavitation in the EURISOL target mock-up under representative flow conditions. Withou…

“RecPack” a reconstruction toolkit

2004

We present a C++ toolkit to do tracking and vertex reconstruction. The toolkit incorporates common fitting methods, as the Kalman Filter, a framework to define a detector setup, a general navigation and a simple simulation. Furthermore, the toolkit provides a collection of interfaces which facilitates the addition of new fitting methods, trajectory models, geometrical objects, pattern recognition logic, etc. Although the toolkit was originally developed to be used in High Energy Physics, it could be applied to other fields.

Preparation of thin counting samples by volatilization-condensation

1992

Abstract We describe a technique for the preparation of thin counting samples of metallic elements for a α-particle and fission-fragment spectroscopy. The elements are volatilized in a carrier gas stream through a capillary and condensed on a cooled thin collector foil.

Wien filter for cooled low-energy radioactive ion beams

2002

A Wien filter for cooled radioactive ion beams has been designed at Ion Guide Isotope Separator On Line technique (IGISOL). The purpose of such device is to eliminate doubly charged ions from the mass separated singly charged ions, based on q=+2→q=+1 charge exchange process in an ion cooler. The performance of the Wien filter has been tested off-line with a discharge ion source as well as on-line with a radioactive beam. The electron capture process of cooled q=+2 ions has been investigated in a radiofrequency quadrupole ion cooler with varying partial pressures of nitrogen. Also, the superasymmetric fission production yields of 68<A<78 nuclei have been deduced.
