Spinrotator for MAMI

A source of polarized electrons based on the photoemission of a GaAsP-cathode [1] has been set up to inject polarized electrons in the Mainz microtron MAMI. In order to compensate the spin precession in MAMI a spinrotator system has to be integrated in the 100 keV beamline from the source to the injector linac to achieve the required longitudinal spin direction at target position.
Improved instrument for the determination of the neutron electric charge

Abstract We present an improved instrument for the determination of the neutron electric charge with ultracold neutrons. Several technical upgrades with respect to a former experiment will be discussed in detail. As a first test, we applied the apparatus to investigate the influence of gravitational attraction by means of a massive block of lead. The calculated sensitivity for a charge measurement is δ q n ≈ 2.14 × 10 − 20 e / day . Planned modifications increasing the sensitivity up to δ q n ≈ 1.34 × 10 − 21 e / day are demonstrated.
High-multiplicity muon events observed with EMMA array

Abstract High-multiplicity data, collected with a segmented scintillator array of the cosmic-ray experiment EMMA (Experiment with Multi-Muon Array), is presented for the first time. The measurements were done at the depth of 75 meters (210 m.w.e.) in the Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland. EMMA uses two types of detectors: drift chambers and plastic scintillation detectors. The presented data were acquired over the period between December, 2015 and April, 2018 using 128-800 plastic scintillator pixels probing the fiducial area of ˜100 m2. Positive Muons as Local Probes in Paramagnetic Rare Earth Systems

In recent years a new research method has been developed in solid state physics which is based on the asymmetry of muon decay1. A positive muon at rest decays after a mean lifetime of 2.2 μsec into a positron and two neutrinos, the positron being emitted preferentially in the direction of the muon spin. Hence if spin polarized muons are implanted in a solid, the time evolution of the muon spin polarization can be determined by a measurement of the angular distribution of the positrons. In this Chapter, the SK detector is described and explained in detail since it is the precursor and base experiment for SuperK-Gd. SK is described as a neutrino detector itself for astrophysical, solar and atmospheric neutrinos and also as far detector of the T2K neutrino beam.
The photon tagging facility at the Saskatchewan Accelerator Laboratory

Abstract A photon tagging facility has been constructed for use with the c.w. electron beam at the Saskatchewan Accelerator Laboratory (SAL). The facility consists of a “clam-shell” type magnetic spectrometer with a 62 channel plastic scintillator focal plane detector allowing a post-bremsstrahlung electron energy resolution of 1%. Specialized focal plane and coincidence electronics have been designed and constructed at SAL and allows experiments to be performed with average tagged photon rates of greater than 1 × 108/s.
In-beam electron spectrometer used in conjunction with a gas-filled recoil separator

The conversion-electron spectrometer SACRED has been redesigned for use in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled recoil separator. The system allows in-beam recoil-decay-tagging (RDT) measurements of internal conversion electrons. The performance of the system using standard sources and in-beam is described.
IRiS—Exploring new frontiers in neutron-rich isotopes of the heaviest elements with a new Inelastic Reaction Isotope Separator

Abstract A dedicated Inelastic Reaction Isotope Separator (IRiS) for multi-nucleon transfer products will be designed and installed at GSI. Research at IRiS will focus on the investigation of new neutron-rich isotopes of the heaviest elements, study of which will advance various research fields, such as nuclear chemistry, nuclear and atomic physics, as well as nuclear astrophysics. The scientific motivation for this project and the alternative design options for the separator and its main components are discussed.
New ion-guide for the production of beams of neutron-rich nuclei between Z=20–28

It has been shown for the first time that quasi- and deep-inelastic reactions can be successfully incorporated into the conventional Ion-Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) technique. This is of particular interest for characterizing the decay properties of refractory elements and is applied to neutron rich nuclei between Z = 20-28. As a first step of this project, the kinematics of quasi- and deep-inelastic reactions, such as {sup 197}Au({sup 65}Cu,X)Y, were studied. Beamline for low-energy transport of highly charged ions at HITRAP

Abstract A beamline for transport of highly charged ions with energies as low as a few keV/charge has been constructed and commissioned at GSI. Complementary to the existing infrastructure of the HITRAP facility for deceleration of highly charged ions from the GSI accelerator, the new beamline connects the HITRAP ion decelerator and an EBIT with the associated experimental setups. Therefore, the facility can now transport the decelerated heavy highly charged ions to the experiments or supply them offline with medium-heavy highly charged ions from the EBIT, both at energies as low as a few keV/charge.
