COMMISSIONING OF THE SPEDE SPECTROMETER WITH STABLE BEAMS

2017

The SPectrometer for Electron DEtection (SPEDE) has been constructed for in-beam nuclear structure studies using radioactive ion beams. SPEDE employs a silicon detector for detecting conversion electrons. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the MINIBALL spectrometer at HIE-ISOLDE, CERN. Peer reviewed

A ten-fold divided total absorption Ge(Li) gamma-ray detector

1976

Abstract We have constructed a split-crystal total absorption Ge(Li) gamma-ray spectrometer and special logic electronics for rejecting Compton continuum in spectra. A 10 cm3 planar detector was divided into ten electrically separated detectors by grinding nine parallel slots on the n-surface of the detector. In operation both the n- and p-contacts are isolated from the ground. Using capacitive sharing, most of the released electrical charge is taken from the p-contact into an ordinary pulse amplifier line and analyzed. A small fraction of the charge collected at the n-strips is observed with voltage-sensitive FET-preamplifiers. The following logic electronics provides a gate pulse for the …

First online operation of TRIGA-TRAP

2020

Abstract We report on the successful coupling of the Penning-trap mass spectrometry setup TRIGA-TRAP to the research reactor TRIGA Mainz. This offers the possibility to perform direct high-precision mass measurements of short-lived nuclei produced in neutron-induced fission of a 235 U target located near the reactor core. An aerosol-based gas-jet system is used for efficient transport of short-lived neutron-rich nuclei from the target chamber to a surface ion source. In conjunction with new ion optics and extended beam monitoring capabilities, the experimental setup has been fully commissioned. The design of the surface ion source, efficiency studies and first results are presented.

SphinX: The Solar Photometer in X-Rays

2012

Solar Photometer in X-rays (SphinX) was a spectrophotometer developed to observe the Sun in soft X-rays. The instrument observed in the energy range ≈ 1 – 15 keV with resolution ≈ 0.4 keV. SphinX was flown on the Russian CORONAS–PHOTON satellite placed inside the TESIS EUV and X telescope assembly. The spacecraft launch took place on 30 January 2009 at 13:30 UT at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia. The SphinX experiment mission began a couple of weeks later on 20 February 2009 when the first telemetry dumps were received. The mission ended nine months later on 29 November 2009 when data transmission was terminated. SphinX provided an excellent set of observations during very low solar activ…

Fundaments of photoelectric readout of spin states in diamond

2021

Abstract The chapter “Fundaments of photoelectric readout of spin states in diamond” deals with the detection of NV centre spins in diamond using the photoelectric detection of magnetic resonances (PDMR) method, introduced in a series of recent publications. It provides in particular insights into the physics of electronic transitions of the NV center, leading to the free carrier generation, and discusses methodologies how to implement the photocurrent detection principles in the dynamically evolving field of quantum technologies. Recent results on the single electron and the single nuclear spin qubits photoelectric readout are presented, along with a microwave-free NV magnetometry techniqu…

Solar Neutrino Spectroscopy

2017

More than forty years after the first detection of neutrinos from the Sun, the spectroscopy of solar neutrinos has proven to be an on-going success story. The long-standing puzzle about the observed solar neutrino deficit has been resolved by the discovery of neutrino flavor oscillations. Today's experiments have been able to solidify the standard MSW-LMA oscillation scenario by performing precise measurements over the whole energy range of the solar neutrino spectrum. This article reviews the enabling experimental technologies: On the one hand mutli-kiloton-scale water Cherenkov detectors performing measurements in the high-energy regime of the spectrum, on the other end ultrapure liquid-s…

Future $\nu_\tau$ Oscillation Experiments and Present Data

1995

Our goal in this paper is to examine the discovery potential of laboratory experiments searching for the oscillation $\nu_\mu(\nu_e) \rightarrow \nu_\tau$, in the light of recent data on solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments, which we analyse together with the most restrictive results from laboratory experiments on neutrino oscillations. In order to explain simultaneously $all$ present results we use a four-neutrino framework, with an additional sterile neutrino. Our predictions are rather pessimistic for the upcoming experiments NOMAD and CHORUS, which, we find, are able to explore only a small area of the oscillation parameter space. On the other hand, the discovery potential of futu…

Effects of degenerate sterile neutrinos on the supernova neutrino flux

2004

We consider the possibility that there exist sterile neutrinos which are closely degenerate in mass with the active neutrinos and mixed with them. We investigate the effects of this kind of active-sterile neutrino mixing on the composition of supernova neutrino flux at the Earth. If an adiabatic MSW-transition between active and sterile neutrinos takes place, it could dramatically diminish the electron neutrino flux.

Probing light sterile neutrino signatures at reactor and Spallation Neutron Source neutrino experiments

2017

We investigate the impact of a fourth sterile neutrino at reactor and Spallation Neutron Source neutrino detectors. Specifically, we explore the discovery potential of the TEXONO and COHERENT experiments to subleading sterile neutrino effects through the measurement of the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering event rate. Our dedicated $\chi^2$-sensitivity analysis employs realistic nuclear structure calculations adequate for high purity sub-keV threshold Germanium detectors.

Experimental searches on sterile neutrinos

2015

While neutrino oscillations among the three active neutrino flavors are by now well established, several anomalies observed at relatively short baselines in oscillation experiments hint towards the existence of one or more additional sterile neutrino flavors. As a consequence, several experiments are in preparation that are dedicated to test the sterile neutrino hypothesis. The present contribution gives an overview of the on-going experimental efforts, highlighting the two projects that are foreseen to start in 2015: SOX deploying a radioactive neutrino source at short distance from the BOREXINO detector at LNGS, and STEREO searching for sterile neutrino oscillations at short distance from…
