Putable common stock
2004
Abstract The underpricing of initial public offerings is a well-documented phenomenon in the financial literature. The purpose of this paper is to show how this empirical regularity could be solved by an appropriate choice of financing instruments, namely, by an intelligent mix of common stocks and put options. The latter additional instrument, modeled in this paper as a lump sum paid by insiders of the firm to outsiders, helps alleviate the asymmetry of information existing between insiders and outsiders of the corporation, allowing good firms to sell the package they offer at the full information value.
Regulation of security tokens as financial instruments in the EU: is there a need for amendments?
2022
In 2020 the European Commission proposed laws on crypto-assets and DLT. The EU treats security tokens as financial instruments, provided that they fall into the MiFID II definition. This Thesis aims to provide classification for crypto-asset as a financial instrument, to identify regulatory gaps in the EU legislation applicable to crypto-assets that qualify as financial instruments (security tokens), and to provide recommendations in relation to security tokens regulation in the EU. The results indicate that Amending Directive will harmonize the procedure for classification of a crypto-asset as a financial instrument across the EU, but the requirement for the expected profit to be derived f…

La géopolitique du foncier : pouvoirs et échelles d’action
2018
When it comes to land management, successive reforms to territorial governancehave resulted in power games that have placed intercommunalauthorities in charge of coordination without any clearly defined institutionalhierarchy. The interviews conducted with actors in the territories studied(the Communauté de communes [joint local authorities] of the Vallée deChamonix Mont-Blanc, Pays du Grésivaudan and Massif du Vercors) and ouranalysis of the public policy tools they use highlight the change in scale thathas occurred in land management. We argue that the geopolitical stakes ofland have been elucidated with the constitution of dedicated engineering, which invites us to distinguish between the…
A first Multi-GAS based characterisation of the Boiling Lake's (Dominica, Lesser Antilles) volcanic gas plume
2013
We used a Multi-component Gas Analyser System (Multi-GAS) to measure, for the very first time, the composition (H2O, CO2, H2S, SO2) of the volcanic gas plume issuing from the Boiling Lake, a vigorously degassing, hot (T ~ 80-90°C) volcanic lake in Dominica, West Indies. The Multi- GAS captured in-plume concentrations of H2O, CO2 and H2S were well above those typical of ambient atmosphere, while no volcanic SO2 was detected (<0.05 ppm). These were used to derive the Boiling Lake plume characteristic ratios of CO2/H2S (5.2±0.4) and H2O/CO2 (31.4±6). Assuming that other volcanic gas species (e.g., HCl, CO, H2, N2, etc.) are absent in the plume, we recalculated a (air-free) composition for the …
Enhanced detection of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes by AGILE
2015
Abstract At the end of March 2015 the onboard software configuration of the Astrorivelatore Gamma a Immagini Leggero (AGILE) satellite was modified in order to disable the veto signal of the anticoincidence shield for the minicalorimeter instrument. The motivation for such a change was the understanding that the dead time induced by the anticoincidence prevented the detection of a large fraction of Terrestrial Gamma‐Ray Flashes (TGFs). The configuration change was highly successful resulting in an increase of one order of magnitude in TGF detection rate. As expected, the largest fraction of the new events has short duration (<100 μs), and part of them has simultaneous association with light…
The Silver Voltameter: An Essential Instrument for the Definition of the Unit of Electric Current
2017
We discuss the restoration of a silver voltameter belonging lo the Historical Collection of Physics Instruments of the University of Palermo. We stress the essential role this instrument had in the definition of the unit of electric current.
The Historical Collection of Physics Instruments and the Museum System of the University of Palermo
2017
In 2011, the University of Palermo instituted the University Museum System (Sistema Museale di Ateneo, SiMuA), in order to coordinate all the museum activities with the aim to pursue common goals, to foster the development of their activities and making them accessible to the public at large. The SiMuA coordinates 6 Museums and 13 Collections. The Botanical Garden, founded in 1789, with its richness of cultivated flora, is the “flagship” of European living museums and the cradle of botany in Sicily; the Museum of Zoology “P. Doderlein”; the Museum of Geology “G. G. Gemmellaro” and the “Specola”, the latter housed in the Astronomical Observatory founded in 1790; the Museum of Radiology and t…
Highlights from the ARGO-YBJ Experiment
2012
""The ARGO-YBJ experiment at YangBaJing in Tibet (4300m a.s.l.) has been taking data with its full layout since October 2007. Here we present a few significant results obtained in gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic-ray physics. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of gamma-ray emission from point-like sources (Crab Nebula, MRK 421), on the preliminary limit on the antiproton\\\/proton flux ratio, on the large-scale cosmic-ray anisotropy and on the proton-air cross-section. The performance of the detector is also discussed, and the perspectives of the experiment are outlined.""
La vocalidad del violín en el norte de Italia en torno a 1600
2021
Throughout the present research I intend to demonstrate the powerful link between the vocal practice in accompanied monody and the way Early Italian violin music ought to be interpreted. Due to the scarce amount of articulation and ornamentation in this music, I consider that historical criteria should be found in order to back up the subjective choices in its performance. According to this, I focus on reviewing sources that describe the vocal practice around 1600, but also contemporary sources in which we can find instructions addressed to bow instruments. Besides, a catalogue of articulations and ornamentations present in early editions of printed violin music is attached. Last, I comment…
