Tourism and territorial growth determinants in insular regions: A comparison with mainland regions for some European countries (2008–2019)
2022
The article investigates the different growth patterns of islands and mainland regions by looking at their tourism and territorial characteristics differences. We considered per capita income and employment growth patterns in a panel data model focused on 74 regions in seven European coun- tries from 2008 to 2019. The results show how the impor- tance of some growth factors, especially those related to tourism and environmental sustainability, varies between islands and mainland regions. The article suggests specific policy implications for island regions in line with the European Union guidelines. Our findings support the need to pursue different approaches to sustain growth in islands and…
Narrative inquiry and historical skills. A study in teacher training
2017
This paper addresses narrative thinking and literacy levels in future primary school teachers in Spain. It uses the study of a historical synthesis of one of the main narratives in Spanish history: the Christian expansion through Muslim territories in the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages. Accounts by 283 students of the degree in elementary school teaching at the universities of Valencia and Murcia were studied. The aim was to ascertain the students' discursive abilities with respect to their historical thinking skills. The results reveal poor narrative skills in future teachers and a very low level of historical literacy.

The nomenclature of some Iberian hybrids is revised and several new combinations are proposed: <i>Centaurea X subdecurrens</i> var. segobricensis, C.</i> X <i>subdecurrens</i> notbosubsp. <i>albuferae, Cistus</i> X <i>hybridus</i> nothosubsp. <i>grandiflorus</i> var. <i>secallianus. C.</i> X <i>ledon</i> var. <i>recognitus, C. </i>X <i>nigricans</i> var. <i>longifolius, C.</i> X <i>nigricans</i> nothosubsp. <i>grosii</i> and <i>Onopordum</i> X <i>humile</i> var. <i>turolensis</i>. Revision of Recent and fossil Mixtacandona Klie 1938 (Ostracoda, Candonidae) from Italy, with description of a new species
2017
Although studies on ostracods dwelling in inland subterranean habitats of Italy have increased in the last decades, highlighting a considerable taxonomic diversity, available information is still far from sufficient to understand phylogenetic and biogeographic relationships. Mixtacandona Klie 1938 is one of the most common and diverse genera of ostracods in subterranean waters. Of the 20 living recognized species in the genus, all stygobiontic and restricted to the Palearctic Region, four are known for the Italian peninsula and Sardinia, one of which exclusively as fossil. Several other Recent and fossil taxa attributable to Mixtacandona, but identified at supraspecific level, have been rep…
Energy and speleogenesis: Key determinants of terrestrial species richness in caves
2017
Abstract The aim of this study was to unravel the relative role played by speleogenesis (i.e., the process in which a cave is formed), landscape‐scale variables, and geophysical factors in the determination of species richness in caves. Biological inventories from 21 caves located in the southeastern Iberian Peninsula along with partial least square (PLS) regression analysis were used to assess the relative importance of the different explanatory variables. The caves were grouped according to the similarity in their species composition; the effect that spatial distance could have on similarity was also studied using correlation between matrices. The energy and speleogenesis of caves account…
The Brain Resting-State Functional Connectivity Underlying Violence Proneness: Is It a Reliable Marker for Neurocriminology? A Systematic Review
2019
Introduction: There is growing scientific interest in understanding the biological mechanisms affecting and/or underlying violent behaviors in order to develop effective treatment and prevention programs. In recent years, neuroscientific research has tried to demonstrate whether the intrinsic activity within the brain at rest in the absence of any external stimulation (resting-state functional connectivity; RSFC) could be employed as a reliable marker for several cognitive abilities and personality traits that are important in behavior regulation, particularly, proneness to violence. Aims: This review aims to highlight the association between the RSFC among specific brain structures and the…
European cohesion principle and the institutional and economic development of an insular region: the case of Sicily1
2018
This paper is a tribute dedicated to the memory of Alessandro Argiroffi, professor of philosophy of law and human rights, colleague of the University of Palermo. It was presented at the Local Economic Development Program at the London School of Economics and Political Science - New Academic Building - London March 7, 2015 for the first time, and than in Bilbao, at the Conference “Significado y funcíon de las regiones con autogobierno y parlamentos legislativos en la construccion de la Europa política” organized by Universidad del País Vasco/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, October 10‐11, 2017
The re-emergence of the condition of insularity in the Italian and European legal system
2022
The essay deals with the question of the conditions of insularity in the European and Italian legal systems by analyzing the regulatory evolutions and the studies of the Regions on the subject up to the recognition referred to in the Constitutional law n. 2 of 2022 (art.119, 6 paragraph)
THE ESTIMATION OF THE COSTS OF INSULARITY THROUGH A REGRESSIVE ECONOMETRIC MODEL APPLIED TO SICILY
2022
The geographic nature of the islands determines a peculiar condition of peripherality and specific accessibility problems often associated with the presence of structural delays in development processes. Data on the gaps due to insularity, as the case of Sicily clearly shows, returns an alarming picture that highlights employment imbalances, high poverty, high costs for transport, widespread margins, reduced internationalization and a decisive infrastructural inequality. In this work we have tried to offer a contribution to the meager debate on insularity, starting from the measurement of the disadvantage of insularity in economic terms. For Sicily, an estimate of the costs related to the i…
