Findings from our laboratory and others have demonstrated that the hormone insulin has chronic effects within the CNS to regulate energy homeostasis and to decrease brain reward function. In this study, we compared the acute action of insulin to decrease intake of a palatable food in two different behavioral tasks—progressive ratios sucrose self-administration and mu opioid-stimulated sucrose feeding—when administered into several insulin-receptive sites of the CNS. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an aging-related multi-factorial disorder to which metabolic factors contribute at what has canonically been considered a centrally mediated process. Although the exact underlying mechanisms are still unknown, obesity is recognized as a risk factor for AD and the condition of insulin resistance seems to be the link between the two pathologies. Using mice with high fat diet (HFD) obesity we dissected the molecular mechanisms shared by the two disorders. The latency of pattern-reversal VEPs was studied in type I insulin-dependent diabetics without retinal and extraocular involvement. One hundred eyes of 50 diabetics (mean age 19.8 +/- 7.2 years) formed the study group; the duration of the disease ranged between 1 month and 15 years. The latencies of VEPs were progressively delayed in relation to the duration of the disease, becoming more and more evident and stabilizing after about 6 years from the onset of diabetes. The VEP alterations probably indicate alteration of membrane balance or demyelinization.

The aim of the present study was to analyze the relationship between insulin resistance and the ambulatory blood pressure components in obese children and adolescents. Eighty-seven overweight and obese white children and adolescents of both sexes, of European origin from 6 to 18 years of age (mean age: 10.9±2.7 years), were selected.
