The Coordination Problem in Regional Integration

2021

A catch-22 situation or coordination failure between the slow creation of well-integrated regional markets and low economic diversification (plus sophistication and specialization) is unfolding in Africa. Ubiquitous trade barriers translate into a paradoxical tariff pattern by which African neighbours are treated worse than remote trade partners. In the face of widespread irregularities and high trade costs, ‘trade facilitation’ has become an important technical approach to easing trade with the support of donor agencies. This chapter examines the systemic potential and limits of trade facilitation programmes. As a general alternative to institution-heavy, imperfect integration along the tr…

Estimation of significant solvent concentration ranges and its application to the enhancement of the accuracy of gradient predictions.

2004

Abstract The solvent concentration range actually useful for gradient predictions is significantly narrower than the total range scanned in a gradient run. This range, called “solvent informative range” (SIR), if known with the highest accuracy, allows to predict gradient retention times ( t g ) with minimal error. The small size of the SIR supports the application of the linear solvent strength theory (LSST). Furthermore, LSST allows a closed-form solution to the integral required to predict gradient retention times, which eliminates numerical integration, needed with other retention models. A methodology that calculates the SIR by applying error analysis, and uses it to improve the accura…

A first return examination of vector valued integrals.

2009

We prove that for each Bochner integrable function f there exists a trajectory yielding the Bochner integral of f, and that on infinite dimensional Banach spaces there exist Pettis integrable functions f such that no trajectory yields the Pettis integral of f.

A critical perspective on Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) applied in a Norwegian public hospital project

2020

Does the IPD concept deliver as required and expected, and if not, how can that be explained? This paper is a critical realist inspired methodology based on a combination of the inductive and deductive approaches used in case study research. IPD is based on relational contracting between multiple parties, in this case between the Owner, Contractor, MEP subcontractors and a group of Consulting engineers who share control of the project. At the core of the concept is shared risk and opportunities among the parties in the IPD contract. Our theoretical perspectives are based mainly on the Principal-Agent theory (PA), Transaction Cost theory (TC), and its related incentives. This paper reports o…

What drives the disintegration of the loan origination value chain in the banking business

2015

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to analyze the vertical disintegration of the bank loan origination value chain. This paper conducts a study on the credit information market from the perspective of the bank's decision to vertically disintegrate the loan origination value chain. The main aim is to identify the relevant drivers of the decision to vertically disintegrate the credit assessment phase in the lending business.Design/methodology/approach - Transaction cost economics and information asymmetry are the typical perspectives of analysis of the vertical scope of business value chains.Findings - This paper argues that in order to capture the drivers underlying the dynamic evolution…

Vertical integration and profitability of the agrifood industry in an economic crisis context

2015

<p>In a setting of economic and financial crisis, most companies experienced a reduction in their profitability. Thus, our study allows us to identify vertical integration strategies developed by companies to overcome the crisis. This paper is aimed at unveiling the determining factors of the profitability of Spanish agrifood firms, depending on whether they are backwards vertically integrated or not. In order to attain our objective, we implemented a first difference regression model. The main contributions of the article lie in the incorporation of a variable that distinguishes integrated firms from the rest and the separate analysis of the two groups of firms. The results suggest t…

Brokers in the Credit Market: An Examination of the Vertical Scope

2014

This paper analyzes the vertical disintegration of the bank loan origination value chain. The main aim is to identify the relevant drivers which cause the emergence of brokers in the credit market which lead to vertical disintegration of the credit origination value chain. Transaction cost economics is the typical perspective of analysis of the vertical scope of banking value chains. This paper argues that in order to capture the drivers underlying the dynamic evolution of the vertical scope of bank loan origination business models, the above perspectives must be combined and further integrated with a capabilities and resource based view and with a modularity perspective.

A Compact SPICE Model for Organic TFTs and Applications to Logic Circuit Design

2016

This work introduces a compact DC model developed for organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) and its SPICE implementation. The model relies on a modified version of the gradual channel approximation that takes into account the contact effects, occurring at nonohmic metal/organic semiconductor junctions, modeling them as reverse biased Schottky diodes. The model also comprises channel length modulation and scalability of drain current with respect to channel length. To show the suitability of the model, we used it to design an inverter and a ring oscillator circuit. Furthermore, an experimental validation of the OTFTs has been done at the level of the single device as well as with a discrete-…

GyDB mobilomics: LTR retroelements and integrase-related transposons of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum genome

2011

[EN] The Gypsy Database concerning Mobile Genetic Elements (release 2.0) is a wiki-style project devoted to the phylogenetic classification of LTR retroelements and their viral and host gene relatives characterized from distinct organisms. Furthermore, GyDB 2.0 is concerned with studying mobile elements within genomes. Therefore, an in-progress repository was created for databases with annotations of mobile genetic elements from particular genomes. This repository is called Mobilomics and the first uploaded database contains 549 LTR retroelements and related transposases which have been annotated from the genome of the Pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum. Mobilomics is accessible from the GyDB 2.…

A new rotational integral formula for intrinsic volumes in space forms

2010

A new rotational version of Crofton's formula is derived for the intrinsic volumes of a domain Y in a space form. More precisely, a functional is defined on the intersection between Y and a totally geodesic submanifold (plane) through a fixed point, such that the rotational average of this functional is equal to the intrinsic volumes of Y. Particular cases of interest in stereology are considered for the Euclidean case. © 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
