Vulvar cancer: a review for dermatologists.

2015

Vulvar malignancies are important tumors of the female reproductive system. They represent a serious health issue with an incidence between 2 and 7 per 100,000 and year. We provide a review about most important cancer entities, i.e., melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, neuroendocrine cancer, and skin adnexal malignancies. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common vulvar malignancy that can develop from vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia or de novo. Basal cell carcinoma represents only 2 % of all vulvar cancers. Melanoma of the vulva exists in two major types—superficial spreading and acral lentiginous. A special feature is the occurrence of multiple vulvar melanomas. Of …

Physical forces in blister formation. The role of colloid osmotic pressure and of total osmolality in fluid migration into the rising blister.

1978

The physical forces operative in the fluid migration from the interstitial spaces into the blister cleft have not been directly measured until now. The colloid osmotic pressure and the total osmolality were determined in suction blister fluid after mild suction blister production by a modified “Dermovac” and in blister fluid of patients with dermatitis herpetiformis, bullous allergic contact dermatitis and pemphigus vulgaris and in the sera of healthy persons. The colloid osmotic pressure was measured by means of a recently developed osmometer with a semipermeable membrane between 2 chambers, one of them filled with Ringer solution, the other with the blister fluid or serum sample. The nega…

Cuticular hydrocarbon profiles in Blattella germanica: effects of halofenozide, boric acid and benfuracarb

2006

1379-1176 (Print) Journal Article; In order to complete previous studies conducted on Blattella germanica, three insecticides from different groups were evaluated: boric acid, an inorganic compound, benfuracarb, a carbamate, and halofenozide, a non-steroidal ecdysone agonist. Boric acid (8.20%, LD50) and benfuracarb (2%, LD50) were incorporated into the diet and orally administrated to newly emerged adults of both sexes, while halofenozide (0.33%, LD50) was applied topically. Hydrocarbons extracts was made on bidistilled pentane from control and treated series sampled 6 days following treatment. Extracts was analyzed by gas chromatography. Data showed that cuticular profiles of control and …

Boreal fishes and ultraviolet radiation : actions of UVR at molecular and individual levels

2005

Eeva-Riikka Vehniäinen on väitöskirjatyössään tutkinut UV-säteilyn vaikutuksia siian, hauen ja muikun poikasissa. Ihmisen aiheuttama otsonikerroksen ohentuminen on lisännyt maan pinnalle saapuvan ultravioletti-B-säteilyn (UVB) määrää viime vuosikymmenten aikana, ja lisääntymisen odotetaan jatkuvan vielä noin 2050-luvulle saakka. UVB-säteily on haitallista eliöille, koska se aiheuttaa vaurioita solun keskeisissä rakenteissa: DNA:ssa, proteiineissa ja lipideissä.Vehniäinen arvioi lisääntyvän UVB-säteilyn aiheuttamaa riskiä taloudellisesti ja ekologisesti tärkeille makeanveden kalalajeillemme, siialle, muikulle ja hauelle, niiden herkimmässä elämänvaiheessa välittömästi kuoriutumisen jälkeen. …

Neuroimmunomodulatory Alterations in Non-Lesional Peritoneum Close to Peritoneal Endometriosis

2012

Objectives: An imbalance in the ratio of sensory to sympathetic nerve fibre (NF) density in peritoneal endometriotic lesions (pEL) has recently been demonstrated and leads to the assumption that this preponderance of the sensory pro-inflammatory milieu is a major cause of pain in endometriosis. Therefore, the density of sensory and sympathetic NFs was determined in distal unaffected peritoneum of endometriosis patients to be able to detect possible alterations in unaffected peritoneum. Methods: In serial pEL sections (n = 40), lesional and matching unaffected peritoneum as well as healthy peritoneum (HP) from patien…

IL-6 Regulates Neutrophil Microabscess Formation in IL-17A-Driven Psoriasiform Lesions

2014

The lack of a generally accepted animal model for human psoriasis has hindered progress with respect to understanding the pathogenesis of the disease. Here we present a model in which transgenic IL-17A expression is targeted to the skin in mice, achievable after crossing our IL-17A(ind) allele to the K14-Cre strain. K14-IL-17A(ind/+) mice invariably develop an overt skin inflammation bearing many hallmark characteristics of human psoriasis including dermal infiltration of effector T cells, formation of neutrophil microabscesses, and hyperkeratosis. IL-17A expression in the skin results in upregulated granulopoiesis and migration of IL-6R-expressing neutrophils into the skin. Neutralization …

Pili Annulati Coincident with Alopecia Areata, Autoimmune Thyroid Disease, and Primary IgA Deficiency: Case Report and Considerations on the Literatu…

2012

Pili annulati is a rare autosomal dominant hair disorder clinically characterized by a pattern of alternating bright and dark bands of the hair, the bright bands appearing dark if observed by transmitted light. This pattern is due to the periodic occurrence of air-filled cavities along the hair cortex which scatter and reflect the light while precluding its transmission. A susceptibility region, including a possibly responsible Frizzled gene, has been mapped to the telomeric region of chromosome 12q, although a specific mutation has not been identified. The condition has sometimes been observed in concurrence with alopecia areata, and in this paper we report a case in whom the concomitant s…
