Procollagen C-proteinase Enhancer Stimulates Procollagen Processing by Binding to the C-propeptide Region Only*

Background: Procollagen C-proteinase enhancer-1 (PCPE-1) is an extracellular glycoprotein that increases activity of certain zinc metalloproteinases involved in tissue development and repair. Results: PCPE-1 binds uniquely to the C-propeptide region of the procollagen molecule. Conclusion: PCPE-1 enhances proteolysis by binding solely to the procollagen C-propeptides. Significance: These data may lead to future applications in the development of antifibrotic therapies.

Achievement of thermotolerance through hsps phosphorylation in sea urchin embryos.

TPA treatment of sea urchin embryos is able to induce thermotolerance. Evidence is provided that TPA treatment induces phosphorylation of a constitutive stress protein of 38 KDa.

Immunological detection of phenylalanine hydroxylase protein in Drosophila melanogaster.

A monoclonal antibody raised against monkey liver phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) has been used to detect this protein in Drosophila melanogaster. A cross-reacting material (CRM) band of apparent molecular mass 50-52 kDa, equivalent to that deduced for the Drosophila melanogaster PAH protein based on the pah gene cDNA sequence, has been detected. This CRM was analysed throughout development and showed an equivalent pattern to that reported for PAH activity in this insect, with maxima at pupariation and at pharate adult formation. Smad7 controls resistance of colitogenic T cells to regulatory T cell-mediated suppression.

Background & Aims Foxp3-expressing regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a key role in the maintenance of the gut immune homeostasis, and an intact transforming growth factor (TGF)-β signaling is required for their function. In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the TGF-β signaling is impaired because of high expression of the inhibitory molecule Smad7. Although no intrinsic defects in Tregs function have been shown in IBD, it is still unknown whether colitogenic T cells are susceptible to Treg-mediated suppression. Kinetics of solid-state fermentation of lupin with Rhizophus oligosporus based on nitrogen compounds balance

Solid-state fermentation could be a potentially effective method for improving the nutritional value of legumes. The objective of this study was to explore this technology in Lupinus mutabilis, a species of lupin, using a strain of Rhizopus oligosporus mold for solid-state fermentation. Scalp defects can have a number of origins, and their repair is dependent upon their location, size and depth. In the case of the scalp, the repair of even small defects is complicated. Local flaps are the reference for the reconstruction of such defects.
